  11. Communication and coordination between the interior crew ( A side, 2 1/2" C.A.F.S. line through the front door) and the exterior crew (C and D sides, 1 1/2" C.A.F.S. line) really worked well knocking this fire down.

  15. It's not offically "station 2" but there is a 2 bay steel building on the cascade road property (across from the Fresh Town plaza where the Maple Brook greenhouse used to be) that the fire company purchased last year. Right now 31-15 and 31-16 are housed there. With the addition of 31-11 and it being 31' 11" long, it alone takes up the bay that housed 15 and 16 before. We have members that live in that area that respond directly there to get those engines off the floor. The plan is to some day build a new fire house up there. ???not sure when???

  19. The way I learnd to communicate with my cousin was by learning the alphabet first. We would just spell out the words and as I advanced he taught me the actual signs. I am no where near a pro, but 99% of the time he can understand what I am trying to say and I can understand him. It realy comes down to using it on a regular basis. Most departments that I know of have some type of SOP's when it comes to sign aswell... such as directional signs for ground guiding vehicles, and in situations where noise is an issue, such as roof ventalation, and interior attack. It all comes down to training so that you can get your point across when you realy need to and to keep everyone safe.
  20. from firehouse.com: "You'll hear my colleagues tell you that they often rely too much on their hearing and that the ability deaf firefighters have to trust their other senses gives me advantages hearing firefighters don't have," McDevitt said. Totaly true. We have a deaf firefighter in Amenia, (my cousin) who always seams to know more about whats going on than most people, on and off the fire scene. I wish more people would realize this, and most do once they work and train with him.
