Good shots! New if only there was some fire, lol.
Just for clarifications sake, that is the KO Curtain. There is a blanket, but that's different. That which you've pictured is carried by every truck company and brought by the first due roof man at all fireproof high rise fires. The blanket is much larger and carried by SOC units.
  8. firedude liked a post in a topic by Nite Boss in And This Is Why We Are Fortunate To Have ESU
While specialized units are important and needed in this situation,I do feel that again, this is a prime example of why training and adequate manpower are a must. The cop on the street must have the means with training, equipment and adequate manpower to be able to contain a situation. While in the end, an entry team of highly trained and equipped personnel would be able to enter and or control the situation,it's the everyday street cop that is going to make the difference. I fully support the concept of these tactical teams, but until they muster and arrive,it's the patrol cop/s that will be needed to contain the problem, and without theproper training equipment and staffing that makes it impossible.
Post 911, funding was abundant for all sorts of training and equipment, but the powers to be seem to have lost focus on this, show me a job that is staffed better than pre 911,and I would be impressed,I believe most jobs have been cut to the bare bones...

    Great question.
The original plan was as follows:
MDU #1 Town of Greenburgh (Incorporated Villages):
Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Irvington, Hastings & Tarrytown - MDU #1 was never deployed MDU #2 Sound Shore Chiefs:
Harrison, Larchmont, Mamaroneck (Town & Village), Port Chester, Rye & Rye Brook - MDU #2 was originally housed in PC MDU #3 Central Westchester:
Armonk, North White Plains, Purchase & West Harrison - MDU #3 is housed at AFD MDU #4 Briarcliff Area
Briarcliff, Millwood & Ossinging - MDU #4 was purchased by BMFD with grant funds MDU #5 North Central Westchester (Towns of Bedford, Mt. Kisco, Somers)
Bedford, Bedford Hills, Katonah, Mt. Kisco & Somers - MDU #5 was originally housed in Katonah MDU #6 North Western Westchester. (Towns of Cortland & Yorktown)
Not sure if this unit was ever established, there was talk at one time that Montrose VA would handle

Not really but you have to remember fire apparatus age doesn't really go by "road miles". We are more concerned with "engine hours of operation". Since all apparatus have some sort of power take off from the engine to operate a ladder's components, a fire pump, or a generator, those engine hours can translate into road miles for the engine and transmission.
For example my old pumper at my vollie house, a 1981 American LaFrance Century 1250 pumper had only 9800 road miles on it when it went out of service in 2006 (25 years of operation). Its engine hours was up over 20,000 and the pump hours of running was about 18,000. So if you do some calculations, basically you have a truck that ran an equivilant of 20,000+ road miles just by figuring in the pump and engine hours. I know this is not the best explination but I hope it somewhat makes sense.

It had a complete new tractor put on in the early 80's 83 I think and at that point it was third due to Port Chester where it saw almost all its fire duty. It was back up to Ladder 25 100ft Seagrave Tiller. In it's early years when it came into Port Chester if it went down the post road it was going to work , if it came up Pearl st past my house it was going to stand by at HQ. It was a great looking rig with it's long nose Maxim open cab witch by the way still lives on in Peabody Mass.

  21. firedude liked a post in a topic by Nite Boss in Police mergers measured case by case: Westchester, Rockland, Putnam Counties
If County PD was the considation answer, than why isn't the powers to be, banging down their door? Why, I do agree there are many small jobs that need to be merged with adjoining jobs,I'm not convinced that County PD is the answer. There are many questions, that need to be answered, such as:
What happens to all the bosses? County PD can only absorb so many, and is it fair to the County Officers sitting on Promtional lists, to take all these bosses?
Some smaller jobs, are actually very busy and house many prisoners on a daily basis, how would that work?
You can't keep taking all the guys from these jobs and absorbing them into WCDPS,so what happens to them?
What about all these PD HQ's? The Town of Ossining is still trying to get rid of their PD building.
While I certainly agree, these small jobs, need to merged into larger one's,still not convinced that DPS is the answer, just because you see more cars on the Pkwy's and Hwy's.
Ask somebody that lives in Vista or some other corner of the County how long at night it takes for a PD to respond.I'm in no way bashing any agency,it's just sad when guys are responding long distances due to short staffing, and solo!
Yes,Consolidation may be the answer, and I agree with it,but on a Department by Department basis, what works in Ossining may not work in Pelham or Port Chester...
