There is a breathe down exercise where you need to complete 8 stations while on air. It is pass/fail. If you fail, you will not complete the class. They expect some people to fail. Also, you need to have first aid/CPR/AED as prereq's. That's the word our county put out. I think it is a good thing

Great that they are replacing a 39 year old (donated?) engine.
What is sad is that the Great State of New York with a $136.5 BILLION dollar budget needs a grant to replace this engine. It should have been replaced 20 years ago. Shows you how high a priority fire service training is in NYS.

Of course that's what your SCBA vendor will tell you... He wants your $$$$. But seriously, how bad are they and what exactly happened to them?

The bigger problem is the old homes that have had additions. You think its well built and it is, except that new addition.
And we expect the property owner will advise us....The property owner cant even figure out what jurisdiction he lives in, but he is going to know that he has got truss construction. Another feel good bill.

If you have a budget you must stay within, the money man is just a waste, unless he will nitpick every item, then he is a major detriment.
I have sat on committee's for career, combo and volunteer depts. and if you have a target amount and/or a max amount you are set.
Many committees I have witnessed have no clue what the process is and spend time on everything but what is important...i.e we don't care how much water actually flows through it (as long as the plaque says xxx more than some other dept). But we spent 20 hours debating if the blue light should be on the left and the red on the right or the other way around. (and it takes 5 minutes to change the lens so what difference does it make)
The other big mistake I see is "we want it exactly the same as the unit its replacing but 30 years newer" ...... Does that rig perform the way it needs to? "No, but we still want the new one to be the same". In 30 years have you ever used the front suction with the shiny cap on it? "No but we want it on the new rig so they look the same".

Our county dispatching has gone from 33.48 to 155.220 for fire paging, and will keep 33.48 "alive" for a year and half, then it will be highband paging only. My dept sold off our M5 Lowband pagers, bought used M5 highband pagers for less than we sold the lowband ones for, and by doing so, we have saved the taxpayers a ton of $ in the process. I don't need any of the fancy features of the M6 and G1's. When county pages out, I just need it to go beep and tell me where the call is.

Its all about having the Nation show in 2016. Set up was today and will be a great day at the warehouse and I met Ed May today. He has been gold leafing rigs for over 35 years and the 9-11 wall with hundreds of photos of that day. You guys will be lucky to go to both shows in the same area. See you all over the weekend and maybe meet some of you when you go for the tours that are set up for both days. Angelo

The tan truck is a M983A3 HEMTT LET, the green one looks to be a HEMTT M984Asomething wrecker. It looks like the wrecker (green truck) was towing the LET (tan truck) and disaster struck. There is no "tractor-trailer" here.. Just one truck being towed by a wrecker.

Perhaps it was headed to/coming from Camp Smith for the 719th Transportation unit? I know they did a MTOE change and were getting rid of their line haul M915/6's. The LET would be the replacement for the M915 series.

I "owned" several HEMTTs when I was in the Army.. Cargos, fuelers, LHS's. Great trucks, and a blast to drive off road.

All fire districts are REQUIRED to have a purchasing policy in place. The Auditors look for it every year, and to make sure your adhering to it. For example, if it says all purchases between $1000-$5000 must have 3 written quotes, and you buy a widget for $3,500, you better have the 3 written quotes at the ready to prove you adhered to it.

To withdraw monies in a Capital Reserve account, it needs to be put out to a permissive referendum. Basically the district must ask public permission to spend the $ the district already has.

There is more to the Highland Lowes story. I don't have all the details, but it the major ones are Lowes Corporate policy is no fliers, for anything, period.
The Highland Lowes Manager has pledged support to the search teams, offering gloves, boots, a canopy, and allowing fliers to be distributed on the grounds, and has been in contact with the searchers on a several times per day basis.
