Night shift working Engine 58 with my partner Tom Z received a call over the house phone from a 80 year old woman it was midnight. She lived in the former Life Saver's factory building now Condo's on north main street. It was late October and was a cold night. She tried the super she tried the police who told her to call the fire dept. there not doing anything so she called us. My partner talked to her and calmed her down and gave me the thumb's up [meaning were going somewhere] as I was the operator of the rig . The problem that night is she was cold , in fact freezing as the 5x 8 foot factory windows were to much for her to close. 3 minutes later we where there, we closed the big windows for her and got a big kiss and a hug from her. One of my best nights on the job a simple helping hand for some one unable to do a simple task. I always new I can count on the Firefighters to come to my call for help she said. As we left the call we did not say a word to each other all the way back to the firehouse as the grin on our faces would not allow it. The next night we got a call again on the house phone and again it was her. She asked if the guys that came out last night were still on duty and if so can they come to my house again, well we did thinking this might be a problem starting to happen [freaquent flier] we rang the door bell and was meet buy the best apple pie you ever saw. We have the greatest job in the world guy's don't mess it up .

From my limited experience with these set ups, I have found two things: the hose going from the Power unit to the reel gets damaged and the entire trucks needs to be disassembled to fix it or it doesn't have enough power to overcome the extra 30' of friction loss. Or, in the event of a front end collision, much more equipment is damaged than a simple bumper.

I hope that there is a massive turnout of decent Americans both to show respect to the deceased and their families as well as to disrupt, block and drown out the lowlifes who represent the Westboro Baptist Church.

Wow, this is truly a sad state of affairs. FAST training (just like pump operations, engine operations, ladder company operations) is firefighter training. It's a necessity for all members of the department (even if the department does not want to be considered to be a county wide special team). If departments can't find the time to maintain a high level of training in all aspects of firefighting, then it's time for the chief officers and commissioners to take a hard look at the future of the department. If we can't keep up with all necessary training on a regular basis, then we really can't justify being in this 'business'.

I created the Lake Carmel Fasteam and it took a few years to get it where i wanted it to be. The team was active and trained together once a month with our entire department so that even the members that didnt want to respond with the team also got the training. The training not only benifited the departments that requested us but made our department better overall. As the IC at our calls I saw our members coming off our appartus better prepared. After I was Chief the team hung on for a few years but slowly the members lost interest and the current Chief at the time couldn't be bothered to take an interest in the team and dissolved it. I dont want to get into our departments politics but I dont see the members coming off the appartus the way that they use to.
One issue that did occur that Carmel needs to watch out for is that we werent being requested enough and in a timely fashion. In Putnam Co just one department had us on automatic mutual aid and that was after the fire was confirmed(someone actually on scene) so that would be a good 5-8 minutes after the fire was dispatched. By the time we got dispatched and drove over there we had to park the rig out of the way and hike with all our gear to the scene. usually walking up to a fire that has been knocked down and the first crew already taking a blow at rehab. There needs to be a better system of dispatching the Fasteam and in a more timely fashion.

I totally agree i also made it down to the 9/11 memorial last summer and was disgusted by the kind of tourist attraction feel. People posing for pics with big old smiles like they were at the amusement park. It seems people have lost the reality of what happened there. At one point even my son asked why i wasnt smiling and i explained to him that nothing good happened there( he was one on 9/11).I then had him watch the documentories on the History channel and he got it. These people DESERVE our enduring respect i wish more people would show it.

39 years ago I pulled up with Patrol 4 [ now Rescue 40] to find Gullevers fully invovled with engines 58 and 62 ingaged in a full atack on a bad fire. 24 died that night but little was told how over 100 were saved. Many firefighters went down that night going above and beyond the call. Most of us old guys think about this every day of our lives and wished we could have done better with our 3/4 boots two airpacks to a rig and red fireball gloves. There were no paper firefighters and keyboard firefighters that night! .

I wholeheartedly agree, I'm just asking if that's what's being done in P.C. currently.

FAST or RIT is not designed to be a function handled by a specialized unit or group. It is essential that every firefighter be trained in all facets of firefighter rescue. Often incidents that cause firefighters to require emergency rescue, occur early in the incident (well before a county team or specialized team from a mutual aid department can gather a crew and respond). This means that the rescue of the downed or trapped firefighter(s) will have to be initiated by the firefighters who are already on the scene if they are to have a chance at a good outcome.
