Vulcan Society president John Coombs questioned the FDNY’s commitment to helping minorities succeed.
“Some of those instructors are out to break them,” Coombs said. “It’s psychological warfare.”
He said physical demands, such as running a mile and a half in 12 minutes, are too strictly enforced and said probies who show steady improvement are still being weeded out.
“We’ve never had so many injuries at the academy,” he said. “Are they overtraining the candidates?”
And of course they have the answer to the problem. I mean really, did this guy just ask if the are being overtrained???

10 replies......6 about lights......ugh. Guess what lights do? NOTHING! Blue. Green, pink.....2 of them14 of them, makes no difference.
Now, to respond to the very good question that matters:
Laautze gave a good answer. I'll just expand a bit. All standard FDNY engines have a 2 stage pump with a transfer valve. We operate in volume as standard practice. This means that the impellers operate in parallel and produce 50psi at idle. When the valve is switched to pressure, the impellers operate in series, one after the other. At idle, the pump generates 100psi(about). All engines are capable of pumping at high pressure (excess of 250psi) however with each additional stage the upper limit is raised and the engine doesn't have to work as hard. Additionally, engines assigned as high pressure units are outfitted with the discharges painted in white. They are a heavier build. They are meant to be mated to high pressure hose, red in color with white fittings. This hose also allows for a tether to be attached. The tethered line must be tied off to the engine and the standpipe Siamese. A 50' safety zone must be established. This is why there are no HP discharges on the pump panel side. Only a chief officer can order high pressure operations.

This is a pump that allows higher pressure discharges for high rise buildings. There are three impellers in the pump to boost the pressure 3 times allowing operators to overcome the elevation loss when crews are operating on upper floors of buildings that do not have fire pumps (or working fire pumps) on the standpipe system. This requires special high pressure hose to hook from the pumper into the FDC on the building but by the time the water gets to the fire floor you can use standard pressure hose since crews will experience normal pressures due to the elevation pressure loss. Without the ability to pump the proper pressure the crews will not have adequate pressure or flow to fight the fire. Think of how many buildings in Manhattan that are over 30 stories tall...
Most pumpers in the nation have either single or two stage pumps.
Hope this helps and its not too complicated.

What are we, The Mafia? How about, "Don't leave dead animals in boxes on peoples cars"?
I gotta say.....this is a fishy story and clearly a lot is not being told to the paper (which is the way is should be). Senior guys, guys with a lot of experience are usually encouraged to stay, especially with a younger force on a lot of jobs. His son was fired? For what? That's gotta be some story too.
I can't imagine a situation that would warrant dead animals and threatening messages, but there is more to this story than a Capt. who was pushing for safety enhancements with many years experience.
Id say, that's all we'll ever know for sure.

Is this the way a 27 year career should end? I hope they find the person (firefighter) responsible, charge him and dismiss him. I hope his son finds another paid job with another department that appreciates the family tradition inherent in the fire service.

It occured to me that some people might not know, that the old Westchester Street Transportation Co. bus garage and White Plains Fire Department Station Two are the same building. The gutted and abandoned bus garage in the first photo was gutted and rebuilt into today's Station Two. I believe the south end of the building was or is used by WPFD maintenance people.
Btw, about twenty-five years ago there was an embarrassing mishap at Station Two. A friend of mine, Victor Price, was working as a FF assigned to Engine 66 quartered in Station 2. One night an alarm came in about 3 AM. The driver of Eng. 66 took out the bay door by moving the engine forward before the door was opened. What happened was, the driver heard the door's motor go on, run and then shut off. However it had not engaged the door. He put the rig in gear -- it was one of the Maxims -- and started to pull out (obviously without looking for some reason) and bam!.
Like I say, very embarrassing!

I can take a crack at this question about the station's history.
The current Station 2 replaced the former Station 2 in about 1980. The former station was located several blocks east at Hamilton Avenue & North Lexington Avenue and was within an Urban Renewal zone. The old Station 2 was a real classic firehouse in appearance. It was a 2-story, 2-bay house of tan brick construction. A couple of WPFD FFs I knew who were assigned there when the move was made said there were some maintenance issues with the old house. I especially remember them complaining the heat was not too good in the winter. They were happy about the move.
The same two companies were moved, Eng 66 and Truck 33. Later, I don't recall the exact date but during the 1990s I think, Eng 68 was moved to Station 2. Eng 68 was originally quartered at Station 4 at South Lexington Avenue near Maple Avenue. The company was moved in order to close Station 4 as an active firehouse.
Engine 68 is now OOS. This took place within the past five years I would say.

Here's an interesting image from the same Google Streetview as above. These are dated one year ago (Oct. 2012) and look what company is in the bay at Station 2. Engine 71 from Station 7 on North Street. Guess WPFD was a little busy that day.
