Yonkers firefighters battled of pair of blazes Sunday morning on the east side of the city.
The first fire erupted at a three-story home on the corner of Shawnee Avenue and Cherokee Road around 5:10 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find the house fully involved, with heavy fire on all three floors, Deputy Chief John Flynn said.
The second call came in just after 9 a.m. when an apartment at 900 Palmer Road went up in flames.

Home was a two-story multi-family OMD with a finished basement, located in the Park Hills neighborhood. Fire k/d at ~09:15 hrs. 3 L/S/O. Companies picking up at ~9:50 hrs.
Battalion 1 was Safety. Car 6 (Arson Investigator) was requested.

Buchanan woman indicted in $15k theft from Verplanck fire department

Mount Vernon house fire quickly extinguished

MOUNT VERNON — City firefighters quickly put out a fire in a 2 1/2-story house this morning, officials said.
The one-alarm fire was reported about 8 a.m. on the third floor of 241 N. Terrace Ave., Deputy Fire Commissioner Noah Lighty said.
No residents or firefighters were injured.
The fire was confined to the third floor and put out before 8:30 a.m., Lighty said.
"It was a quick stop," the commissioner said.
Firefighters were doing checking the walls to make sure no fire lingered, Lighty said.
How the fire started was not immediately known.

Westchester County adopts provision to ease local police takeovers

Currently, the law allows county police to provide only supplemental and “special” services or necessary aid to local police departments, but not total delivery. The new legislation eliminates that provision, so if a municipality contracts with the county, the Westchester Department of Public Safety can provide total police protection and services to that community.
As Ossining town Supervisor in 2010, Borgia signed a shared-services agreement that resulted in county police taking over all duties of a local police department. The provision that the new law eliminates “was a stumbling block that we had to work around,” she said.

The legislation is supported by Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino, who is expected to sign it next week.

YONKERS — An elderly woman who was apparently confined to her bed because of a medical condition was rescued by two female relatives after a fire broke out early this morning in a room where she was staying at a Hillbright Terrace home, fire officials said.
The woman, who is approximately 73-years-old, and her relatives, approximately 53 and 28, were taken by ambulance to St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers to be treated for smoke inhalation.

He's always been fairly accurate and he's just relaying what the models are showing. Dislike him/like him, it doesn't matter. Regardless, it's too early to tell right now what it's going to do. The Hurricane center sent up planes in 4 waves today to study the storm and gather data. We'll get a better idea once that data is analyzed and as it comes closer to the US.
Even once the planes and weather balloons report back their data, the intensity and final direction of the Sandy will all depend on a "deepening upper level low pressure system" (according to the our regional National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook), which will not necessarily be known until several days from now if not later.

Entergy Accepting Applications from First Responders for Funding
Buchanan, N.Y. – Entergy today announced they are accepting applications for funding through their Safety Responders Fund. The Safety Responders Fund has awarded more than $1 million to local fire, police, emergency medical response and other emergency management organizations since the program’s inception in 2009.
“Entergy is proud to be able to support the vital work these organizations perform and help make investments that enhance the services they provide,” said John Ventosa, site vice president and Entergy’s top official at the Indian Point Energy Center.
The grant program is designed to help fund training and equipment purchases for first responders in the vicinity of Indian Point. Seventy-one separate applications have been approved for funding through the program to date.

"Today members of the Yonkers Police Department conducted a Homeland Security drill with the Yonkers Fire Department, the WCPD Bomb Squad, and Empress Ambulance. The drill was held at the Paladin Center, a training facility in Carmel, N.Y. Description of Incident: Large, powerful, smokey commerical fire started in car dealership supply area/showroom. Building and most cars inside destroyed with collapsed roof on CD side of structure. Searches negative. Multiple L/S/O. Eventually pulled out to perform exterior attack. No reported injuries.
Reported by passerby who saw smoke. Boston Post Road was closed from Weaver Street to Chatsworth Avenue for long period of time. Locals were advised to avoid area due to toxic fumes. Cause determined to be electrical originating in faulty storage room air compressor.

"EXCAVATOR BROUGHT IN DUE TO TRAPED POCKETS OF FIRE, BLOCKED OFF BY THE COLLAPSE. ONCE THE EXCAVATOR OPENED UP TL7 WENT INTO OPERATION WITH MASTER STREAMS AND 2 MONITORS WERE IN OPERATION AS WELL. WHEN THE MAJORITY OF THE POCKETS OF FIRE WERE K/D, TL7 E35 AND E34 RETURNED TO SERVICE. R1 WAS RECALLED TO THE SCENE AND LEFT ON FIRE WATCH WHILE OPERATING A MONITOR OFF THE HYDRANT TO WET DOWN SMOLDERING HOT SPOTS INSIDE OF THE COLLAPSE ZONE.
"lfd brought the first line into the building through a small door. shortly after lfd with tmfd assistance took the front windows and cut the roof up garage door with a partner saw. lfd brought a second line (2.5 inch) into the structure upon the door being cut. pelham fd brought a 2.5 as well and i believe tmfd was operating 2 handlines. we tried out best to make an aggressive interior push but it was too far ahead of us and we were met by intense heat and smoke, as well as, heavy fire conditions throughout. Smoke began rolling over and 2221 made the call to pull everyone out and go exterior. right call because the heat had warped a steel I beam and the 2/3 corner collapsed approx. 15-20 minutes after the building was evacuated. also rescue 1 cleared the scene around 2:30 (as it stayed on fire watch operating a monitor to soak hot spots."
On 10/12/12 morning:
"Larchmont responded to 2040 BPR on smoke from the rear this morning around 07:30. 2221 reported it was a hot spot in the fire building from the other day. E34 hit the hot spot and returned very shortly after"
