    Blue is a level of response. There are multiple. Each level brings different amounts of response. That's as far as I'll go as not to "lay all our cards on the table".

    I have to respectfully disagree. In this age of modern communications, I think the sirens are a thing of the past. If they were so necessary, why would career FD's and PD agencies not "need" them? If you need "two forms of notification", your pager and cell phone text message should suffice. The siren may be a tradition, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking it's the only way to get the job done.

    New hires do pay into their retirement and most jobs are moving over to medical contributions. Teachers get medical FREE upon retirement, so Police and Fire shouldn't?
    I would LOVE to get raises base on merit and productivity, I'd be a millionare, but then again everyone would complain we make too much money even though we "earned" it with "hard work". Im sure the FFs in the room wouldn't mind getting paid either based on the severity of the fires they fight, or get a little extra for going to an over abundance of activated alarms!
    Jobs want their employees educated, and believe me, the coverage isnt much at all so you can have that back, just give me my "merit based" raises!
    Sold us out to the Democrats? The Democrats the ones who want the contributions and such. I think you should read up a little more in a fact based document instead of icantpassacivilservicetest.com!

    Well, a few things.
    I might suggest that your grammar is more ignorant then my opinion, but I’m above that, so I won’t. 
    And while discussing ignorance, let's take a look at your "facts".
    Every single one of your assertions is wrong. I believe that is ignorant. Your contention that all public employee unions are entitled to all the benefits you list is just absurd. Please let us know the source where you are drawing your "facts" from.

    I don't find this comment funny. You have opened up a can of worms and I expect you to apologize to every police officer. This type of "Humor" is unacceptable. If you have a God complex because you have a set of turnout gear and face smoke and flames then keep it to yourself.
    I have spent 20 years on "the streets" in a city police department. During that time I have been shot at, had to face near riots and been injured several times dealing with violent and drunk people. I have had to search for bombs and people with guns.. Funny, I can't ever recall the room entry I had to make being determined too dangerous and we will just wait for the guy to come out. When was the last time you had to tell people that their friends (or worse their child) had died?

    Still think you are a hero champ, I never did I did my job and waited for the next call.

    It is not my intention to demean the fire service, blow my own horn, or to say one department is braver or better than the other, we all have our jobs to do and we all take risks every time we answer the call, but I am replying to one particular comment. We should take pride in our functions whatever we do and not demean the other services.

    So they don't work with the cops at all? Perhaps that's why the suspect was able to flee the country. They may be exceptional crime scene investigators and handle evidence admirably but the human side of this case was botched. If the PD had been involved perhaps they would might have been able to prevent her flight to avoid prosecution.
    Arson is a crime and in this Houston case there were unrelated crimes.

    Ive read this post many times and I still fail to see the reason for posting it but it most certainly requires a response.
    From what I know of you, you have no background in Law Enforcement so your ideas of how cops should feel about being cops and what they should do on duty may be how it is in a perfect world but in reality thats not how it works. This would be like me who knows nothing of fire fighting making critical observations about the fire service and putting all over the post " No offense guys" and " this is not a knock to firefighters".
    As far as I've seen, you're the only member on here from texas so you are the only one who could answer your own question of " why are police officers down here so different ?"
    I've been a cop for 12 years and I go balls to the wall every day I go into work as do most cops I know. Would it be nice to follow up with every crime victim we deal with ? Yes but we don't have the time or the manpower to do that stuff. How do you know that cops up here don't know their post as well as cops in Texas ?
    Cops are in a unique situation to be cross trained in rescue, where as FD's can't be trained in law enforcement specific things... thats just the way it is.
    You ask why is there competition ? There always has and always will be competiton in the emergency services and it's healthy to a degree.
    You ask why are there not more hudson river patrols ? There are in the summer but not so much in the winter but what does one thing have to do with the other ?
    The bottom line is that expanding the scope of your working capabilities means more job security and possibly more state and federal funding.
    The biggest difference between cops up here and cops in texas is that maybe cops in texas enjoy a lot more community support than cops in the north east get.

    Once again its individual Police Officers that are doing this, let us not lump everyone together! I say block all you need, going off face value of the article I'd say at least one lane other than the center should have been blocked. And, if need be, block it all while the patient is taken out of the car and put into the ambulance, how long could it take? 5 minutes? How about 5 hrs for an AI when someone gets hit!

    If it is open case/investigation it can be withheld. PD will have a record of medical aid/transport and as long as they didn't provide treatment it doesnt fall under the hipaa regs so it can be disclosed. There are exceptions to all of it such as if the release will:
    i. interfere with law enforcement investigations or judicial proceedings;
    ii. deprive a person of a right to a fair trial or impartial adjudication;
    iii. identify a confidential source or disclose confidential information relating to a criminal investigation; or
    iv. reveal criminal investigative techniques or procedures, except routine techniques and procedures;
    (f) if disclosed could endanger the life or safety of any person;
    If youre a victim you may seek payback on your perp so "f" could apply. Check out the website NYS Committee on Open Government and give them a call, they are more than helpful and just provided us with some training.

    Emergency services are always preaching fire prevention, change batteries etc. But how about we make a big push for people to number their houses or business. How many times have you driven by a place, numerous times, and couldn't find it because its not clearly numbered? How's your own house, checked lately? Clearly numbering should be a campaign as well.

    I agree with the truck being in the road is safer, agree with the handcuffs going overboard but when people stop listening to the Police it breaks down our system and we'll turn into a 3rd world country in the matter of no time. If an average Joe was walking by and saw this "insubordination" they'd surely get the impression that they wouldn't have to listen to the Police either. It would be so much better if we all got along and got rid of this power trip that so many are on. Lets put more into being safe and going home then whos got the bigger set!
