  2. So, I am studying abroad with my school in Rouen France, which is a little more than an hour north of Paris. Last week, I went to one of the 3 fire houses in Rouen and got a tour by one of the Officers there It was interesting seeing all of the similarities and differences between departments in the US and here in Europe. In this particular department, that I got a tour of, its a paid department with at least 30 firefighters working at once, including a Hazmat Team and Rope Rescue Specialists. They are on 24/48 hour shifts with dispatchers in the firehouse.

Some of the pictures are attached.

Their turnouts, which are significantly different. Their slip on their pants over their regular clothes, but do not have firefighting boots like the ones that at least I am used to. Part of their uniform is workboots, which they wear in fires. While I was there, there was an alarm, and putting on their gear did not look very efficient, keeping their boots on and slipping into the pants.

Due to the nature of the call they will take the necessary equipment and leave others behind in other trailers.

Our equivalent of a brush truck...the brush guards actually have holes to flow water while driving through the fire.

On site training facility...The property also has a private gym for firefighters, which include a basketball court, sauna and weights. The property also has a private soccer field. In the main building of the firehouse, there are bunk rooms, which are nicer than my dorm rooms that my university offers, including a cinema area with flat screen tv's, and a dining hall where they have paid chefs prepare food for you.

Wanna see everyones reaction from this. Has anyone traveled internationally and have found similar departments like this?

  5. Depends on the region and whether you plan to do it as a career.

In the REMO region (Albany area), the system depends on AEMT-CC's and many agencies employee CC's and Paramedics (they serve the same position). Nassau and Suffolk counties also have a lot of CC friendly agencies.

However, if you go downstate into NYC, you will basically never have a job workings as a CC: most places only hire paramedics.

The growing trend seems to be limiting CC's and pushing the higher level of care Paramedic education. 10 years ago, there were a lot more agencies that were CCT friendly but that is becoming few and far between.

If you are doing it just for fun and don't have the time for a Paramedic education, CC may be the way to go (significantly less hours).

If you get your CC you can also bridge up to paramedic at SUNY Cobleskill/Bassett Healthcare which is a great option if you are serious about a career in EMS.

I guess in the long run, I would envision the employment of CC's to end. There has also been talk at the DOH agencies and REMACs of getting rid of the CC level or care, although never approved. However, many REMACs have eliminated protocols for CC's.

I was a CC and bridged up to paramedic and think it was a fantastic decision. If you are serious about your career you should def strive to obtain the highest certification/education available.

    just some thoughts,

I completely agree. If you do not have enough time, such as myself because I am a full time student in St. Lawrence County and have lots of other obligations, the bridge from a CC to a Paramedic is the way to go. That is the route that I am planning on taking this upcoming fall. How long was your bridge course?

  7. Hey all...my name is Spencer, I am a member of the Goldens Bridge Fire Department in Westchester NY. I am currently a college student majoring in Government at St. Lawrence University. While at school I also am a mutual aid member Canton Fire Department in St. Lawrence County NY. I also work for St. Lawrence Emergency Medical Services which is a 24/7 first response agency that we have on our campus while school is in session.

I have my FF1, FF Survival, Pump Ops, EVOC, and my EMT-Basic (going for ALS in the fall).

I also just was recently appointed as Director and Chief of St. Lawrence University EMS and will be taking that role for a year long term starting in May after I finish my study abroad term.

  8. Well it depends... Federal laws state that if the agency is part of, or affiliated with a college or university the student attends, then the international students may volunteer with a F-1 Student Visa. If the agency is not affiliated with the college or university the student attends, then they may volunteer. However, if the chief of the FD is paid, then the international student may not volunteer. I'm not sure if being a US Citizen is a requirement for every FD. All international students should speak to their collage or universities international student center before seeking employment or volunteering.

The department is not affiliated with the University.

  9. I am assuming you mean accepting international students as M/A members in the US? I do not know how residency factors into this. International students are probably not citizens...so I don't know how it works out with regards to that.

Yeah, International students as M/A members in the US who are not citizens, but have a visa for school. Could they be considered into membership?

  10. Yeah, we had to bag everything (turnout gear, helmets, boots, hoods, saws, tools, air packs, etc) and they are quarantined in a trailer behind our station. Departments from across the North Country had loaned gear to firefighters who have needed to turn their gear in. There is a lot of confusion about whether the gear is gone for good or not, and how this decision is made. It is also my understanding that they came around and did air quality and particle tests on different areas/surfaces of rigs...not sure if rigs are going to need special work.

I hope not, that was the first fire that New Engine 7 and R-1 was at after tons of delays. Would be a shame to loose them again for an extended period of time.

Also, question out there about turnout gear. Say an individual is a mutual aid member at a fire department but wears his home gear at the fire, and now it is does need to be destroyed due to an incident like this, that the responsibility of the home fire department right?
