  1. Never mind Palliates we have the Scott Shake. You can now get both drill credit and a work out at the same time. It is rumored that in order to facilitate the new Scott Shake, they will be changing the pass alarm from a duel tone to a loud recording of Shake Shake Shake Shake, Shake Shake Shake, Shake your bottle, Shake your bottle by KC and the sunshine band or Alvin and the Chipmunks. The artist has yet to be determined.

  2. I'm not very familiar with rural fire departments or PA for that matter, but this confused me:

Are there many areas that receive fire protection yet pay no taxes for their fire department? How do these departments meet their budgets, simply through fund raising? Either way I don't see this affecting many home owners as I'd imagine most live in a city or fire district that pays taxes for fire protection.

They do fundraising or in come cases subscription protection. The department basically sends out a bill (or subscription fee notice) each year and if the homeowner or business pays the subscription fees, the department will respond to the location if called. There have been cases were the homeowner declines to pay the subscription fee and there was a fire at their location. The department responded to ensure that everyone was out and then left without fighting the fire. The dwelling burned to the ground. You may feel this is quite controversial but in some places it is a way of life.

  3. I don't think it's all scare tactics, cancer is some serious sh!t. That said while having two sets of gear would be great and necessary the bottom line here is who's going to pay that tab? I have a feeling that no municipality or fire district is just going to happily pony up another $2500 minimum per firefighter. I find this to be another case of sounding great (and completely valid) on paper but next to impossible to put into practice.

Rather then providing a second set of gear (both sets still have to be replaced every 10 years weather used or not). Wouldn't it be more cost effective (and healthier) to have a gear washer in the station and use it regularly. If you clean the crap off the gear as much as possible you would be reducing your exposure. I am not saying was gear after every call but at somewhat regular intervals. Even a second set of gear could be contaminated and you would have two sets of contaminated gear if not cleaned.

  4. X-Ray Mega Airport: EPISODE 3 The Airport Never Sleeps

Show airs on Sunday night at 9pmon the Smithsonian channel

At one of the biggest and busiest airports in the world, there is no downtime. It requires watchful controllers, hard-working emergency teams, and high-tech equipment operating day and night, 24/7. Go behind the scenes at Frankfurt Airport and see firsthand how their on-site firefighters control the flames when disaster hits the runway. Enter the air traffic control tower, where another team that never hits the off switch patrols the skies overhead.

  5. The program promotes best practices and efficiencies like consolidating operations and sharing services across jurisdictions, as well as multi-jurisdictional PSAPs capable of dispatching services for both local and state first responders. Through the benefit of these sustaining resources, counties can also make greater investments in Next Generation 9-1-1 (or NG-911) technology, which will enable text messaging, data services and improved geo-location for emergency response.

Why would grant money be needed to make investments in NG-911 or any cost for 911 for that matter. If I am correct don't we pay a surcharge on all cell and land lines (up to a certain point) every month for the operation and improvements for 911? I believe that this is quite a large sum of money for NYS.

  6. Move over Buck Rodgers!

Short of jumping a Lykan Hypersport through a plate-glass window, escaping from one of Dubai's insanely tall skyscrapers can be tough. Not to worry, the country's Directorate of Civil Defence just signed up to supply their firefighters with jetpacks. It's like the Rocketeer meets The Towering Inferno. Yes, really.

They don't mention cost but this is the country that provides Lamborginis for its police.

  7. Time they start outlawing assault skid-steers. Painted green and with tracks, must be militarized, making it a much more effective killing machine! It's the Bushmaster of the earthwork industry!

If it ever comes to NY, Cuomo will limit it to 7 sections of the skids and you won't be able to buy the interchangeable attachments.

But until then it makes a great stocking stuffer

  8. Remember "Freedom isn't free" It is paid for by the blood of our veterans. We often attribute this to those who have died in the line of duty. But also remember those who have have spilled blood and survived. Many of our veterans not only have to live with the death of their comrades but also a part of them died in the battlefield. Then they have to come back to a changing world that does not appreciate their sacrifice.

I think the popular quote says it best "Some gave all but all gave some".

I know its not politically correct but say a prayer that all our serviceman and women come home safely.

  9. Does TMFD assume the liability from LFD when this situation happens?

N.Y. GMU. LAW § 209-g : NY Code - Section 209-G: Liability for outside aid

  10. They should have initiated a Notification Call to all the Larchmont residence to advise them that they are on Fire Watch for the evening. LOL

Very poor judgment by the LFD IMO.

If there was a fire who were they going to call-Ghostbusters?

So one department couldn't respond because their rig was broken, another department sends 3 career guys on a truck leaving their department understaffed because the vols can only drive the rescue, what a joke

Larchmont was not understaffed, it was closed for the night as no one was left behind to cover the district. If volunteers responded to HQ, there would have been no one to operate the equipment as the 3 Career FF on duty took off, asking the Town of Mamaroneck to standby in the TMFD quarters with 1 and 1.

  11. Looks cool, but I'll bet it wouldn't clear a lot of railroad bridges in my area. Do step stools/ little Giants come standard?

The ladders and soft suction look like they could be a real joy to takedown/ replace. Would probably need the technical rescue equipment to do this.

Just kidding but to the Volvo team good luck with the vehicle.

  12. In the Communication Room of my old department, there was a switch for the air raid sirens on the wall next to where the police dispatcher sat. The switch was there to activate the sirens citywide. (We tested them weekly at the time.) When the switch was pressed, it sounded a bell in the room to let you know the sirens were activated. At about 2 am one morning. the PO assigned as dispatcher leaned back and hit the switch by accident. It set off the bell in the room and got everyone’s attention. I ran into the room and reset the switch, the dispatcher looked up and said “what’s the rush, those sirens haven’t worked in years”

Shortly the switchboard lighted up with residents wanting to know if the City was under attack, or a flood was coming.

Fortunately the Mayor was a sound sleeper and we never heard about our little wake up call.

  13. Too many people complained about them so their use was discontinued in many communities.

As a result, they have been allowed to rot and mostly have rusted to the point that they are useless except for bird houses.

When I was a kid, the fire department blew the horns/sirens at 8 am and 6pm. The commuters knew if they heard the siren that they had to run to make the train. If us kids heard the 6pm siren, we knew it was time to go home for dinner. Now we have to rely on our cell phones.

  14. www.washingtonexaminer.com/obama-to-ban-bullets-by-executive-action-threatens-top-selling-ar-15-rifle/article/2560750

As promised, President Obama is using executive actions to impose gun control on the nation, targeting the top-selling rifle in the country, the AR-15 style semi-automatic, with a ban on one of the most-used AR bullets by sportsmen and target shooters.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives this month revealed that it is proposing to put the ban on 5.56 mm ammo on a fast track, immediately driving up the price of the bullets and prompting retailers, including the huge outdoors company Cabela’s, to urge sportsmen to urge Congress to stop the president.

"The Obama administration was unable to ban America's most popular sporting rifle through the legislative process, so now it's trying to ban commonly owned and used ammunition through regulation," said Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA-ILA,

Federal agencies will still be allowed to buy the ammo. There is no reference to State or Local agencies.
