and Your point is? I've taken tests for free (in the 1980's) I've taken tests In My state and yours and others as well That I've paid 25, 50 100 dollars just for the privilege, of Taking the test... These cities and towns have born the brunt of such testing for years and Often times just to have someone Work there for 6 weeks until they get a call from East Padooka, and they leave
when The City or town Invested often thousands of dollars in the hiring process, maybe The Taxpayers want serious commitment ?!? I dont know I just figured I would share the opening because I know Lots of guys who would KILL to start a life and be on the job somewhere...
I took 3 FrEe tests 2 FD and One dispatcher in the same week in 1985, When Interviewed for the dispatchers job I was up front with Both the deputy of Police and Deputy of Fire, Look I am testing if thats an issue, so be it I was hired and worked 3 years and 8 months before getting a letter to report Monday @ 0800 (The Police Deputy) was The dispatch Supervisor says Geez they didnt give you much time....to give notice did they... NO chief they used the same system you used letter recieved Friday at 4 pm to report 0800 monday... so he said hmm Yeah I guess so ....
Look at it this way, there are Many locations in Westchester & Putnam that only allow residents of the town, village Hamlet or whatever you wanna call them, while others play other games... here's a chance, you choose to take it or Not ... I certainly don't care what you do... Maybe Thats The City of Torrington's Game to weed out folks...

It is what It is Nothing is right for everyone...

As far as "knocking with your elbows" at the firehouse, it usually means an Entemann's cake;bagels;donuts;eggs and bacon to cook for breakfast (if you're coming in for a 9x6 tour), and The Daily News (or the Post, but not so much). Bring copious amounts if you have a pumpkin patch on your helmet (Probie)! That's why you have to "knock with your elbows", cause you're carrying.

    KNOCK WITH YOUR ELBOWS
Bring something, typically a case of beer, to a party. It could mean food or a drink, meant to be used at the party.
You can bring whomever you want, just knock with your elbows.

I was watching weather channel folks when The storm was raging and They were saying This was fluffy and Unpackable snow which means dry and not water latent... which is a saving grace allowing some time to work at clearing snow loads off especially Flat rooves before they collapse... here On the shoreline of Connecticut last year we as we all recall our "blizzard" which gave us a whopping 18 inchs? we had roof collapses and Cities nearly impassible for days, Nation Guard firefighters came in with specialty fire equiptment in some locations.... the issues here, then where nothing Compared to Greater Buffalo ( and similar areas) which suffer these lake affect snows... This weekend while its supposted warm up for us, Its supposed to dump some Rain and More SNow out that way ..... which is not good at all.... Some of the photos comming out of the area are amazing when you consider it was basicly a single storm... The snow Map is crazy below .. lol

Interesting discussion as to why the LDH was connected. I am not a trained FF nor a BFD member, but maybe SOP in hopes that the car can be towed in short order if that plug needs to be used as a secondary source?

Please explain to me how the individuals in either of those photos could have gone without noticing the hydrants.
In the first photo, the driver had to parallel park. Either the driver closed his/her eyes and relied on divine intervention to guide their car in reverse, or he/she saw the hydrant in the rear view mirror while backing up.
In the second photo, the driver is parked JUST far enough forward that the driver's side door won't hit the hydrant when it is opened. I suppose that was simply a stroke of good luck?
Stop making excuses. People don't care because they are lazy and self important.

Working the midnight shift in dispatch, I can tell you how easy this is to happen. There is clearly a need for some sort of SOP/SOG that requires communications with all field units, especially single man units like safety officers and fire marshals. In this day and age when we have cell phones in addition to radios and many vehicles are equipped with GPS tracking it should be fairly easy to check on someone. If I call someone on the radio and they do not answer, then call them on the phone. I would rather wake someone up over and over again than miss a injured or dead MOS. That being said, some of these units have traditionally not bothered to clear verbally when leaving a scene and that has to stop also.
I would suggest that a few things be put into place.
    1) all units must report when they are clear from a scene wither by voice (recorded radio or phone) or by data (MDT/computer).
    2) all single man units must be checked for status every 20 minutes, just like a MARC time for IDLH operations. However incidental communications can count for this and reset the clock.
    3) If a unit fails to check in or contact can not be made at appropriate interval, attempt to contact by other means. If you can't get them by radio try the phone. Send a message to the MDT, try any and every method you have.
    4) If all contact methods fail, then a unit from some agency needs to go to the last know location to make face to face contact. This could be sending a police car to check on a fire marshal or if necessary send a suppression unit back to the scene.
Eventually like with all regulations updating status will become commonplace and the alternate communications methods will be needed less and less except in true emergencies. However I personally don't care how many people it takes to make make sure everybody goes home.

I worked in Bridgeport for over 20 years. During that entire time it was a City trying to hold on or in decline and I believe it still is. Bridgeport's hayday was pre and post WWII when the City was a major manufacturing center with GE, Remington and many other major corporations operating there. The company I worked for sold the building they built and operated from for 70 years and moved to Stratford.
Wherever the money goes, it sure didn't go toward fire apparatus. They operated a mix of some pretty old pieces as front line apparatus with the newer and they are a busy department with a steady stream of workers in some pretty old buildings.

I give the LeLand Fire Department a lot of credit for having members who realized after one of their members had gone down on a scene that doffing gear from a downed firefighter can be a tremendously hard thing to do. The 10-step method they devised seems to accomplish doffing gear and providing immediate care while minimizing how many people would be drawn away from the other tasks at hand on a fire scene and actually looks great and very easy to accomplish. I can't wait to ambush some unsuspecting firefighters who wander by the firehouse on a slow day to practice the method on a mannequin and see the plusses and minuses. Immediate compressions (if he does not need it, I'm sure the firefighter might let you know quickly enough) and it is through gear at first, so no additional damage, plus it has you remove the helmet and mask fairly quickly to see how responsive or not the FF is and provides clear access to airway in case there is vomit in the mask or air gone and mask sucked to face, etc. The video shows the procedure can be technically done by 4 firefighters, and once the FF is removed from pack and coat, the EMS people can swarm over him and take further measures.
Always wondered how we would be able to get gear off quickly enough. Luckily, have never had to find out... May even work to get gear off collapsed heat exhaustion FF much more quickly than the lengthy time it usually takes to strip them down - minus the compressions, of course .
Worth looking into, at any rate. Kudos to them for thinking outside the box. Gets cramped and stuffy in there sometimes.
