Hello again brothers and sisters. As many of you know my 'little buddy' Christopher was diagnosed with "Leg Calf Perthies" about 7 months ago. Tomorrow he goes in for his last surgery to have his hardware removed. Christopher has been a long time fan of what we all do day in and day out. He is also SCARED!!!!! Cristopher and his parents have been close friends of myself and my fiance for many years and wishes for nothing more than to be a "normal" kid with the ambition of one day being a firefighter. After my origional post of the photos from a birthday party for Christopher held at HFD in dutchess, the outpouring of support from the members here was overwhelming. I thank you all again for your support for my best little friend and ask that you keep him in your prayers as he embarks on the final leg of his long journey. If I may ask, can you all post some well wishes and words of encouragement here so that his mother can read them to him both befor his surgery and on his road to recovery. Lets show this little guy what it means to be in the emergency service community!
Thank you all in advance. God bless and stay safe!

The steak dinner comment was for whoever "takes out" this nutcase who doesn't even deserve a place to sleep inside at night. I was in NO WAY making a reference towards this sick f#%@k stating he deserves one. Sorry for any confusion I thought I was making myself clear in my serious reference along with the article the way I was interpretting it was if just about every inmate in that prison is out there to get this derranged nut the minute they can lay their hands on him.

Not sure, but I THINK (and hope) he meant the person who knocks off the suspect should get the award, but I definitely understand your confusion. If not, then you're right.

From what I've read and heard now I guess Detroit has decided to leave supplying apparatus with engines due to the zero emissions requirements. I guess that just leaves Cummins and CAT but I haven't heard anything good about CAT's being thrown in emergency vehicles, supposedly they run into problems as they were built more for highway trucking than stop and go, pumping etc...

As many of you may know April is "Autism awareness month". Tonight also starts the "Light it up blue" month for autism awareness. This month carries a special meaning for MoFire390 and myself. Our younger cousin was diagnosed with autism at an early age. She is now 10 years old and wishes for nothing more than good times and to keep other children form becoming autistic. If you would like to show your support follow these simple steps:
Step 1) buy a blue light bulb
Step 2) Put light bulb in porch light or lamp visable from the front of the house
    Step 3) Turn it on
Blue light bulbs can be found at most party supply stores and Walmarts.
For more information on light it up blue go to: www.lightitupblue.com
For more information on autism go to: www.autismspeaks.com
Thanks in advance for your support. As always, Stay safe!

While I see where you are coming from, I think its a little shallow to use these examples on such a grand scale. Sure every department has its "issues" but the majority in the system do not have the ones stated above. A couple of members here have some quotes in their signatures I find very true, "Over prepare, then go with the flow" and "When the time to perform arrives, the time to prepare has passed" unfortunately in today's world we have to be ready for whatever, I'm not saying in a paranoid way expect the big one its coming! But preparing never hurts.

Today Fire Patrol & Rescue Co.1 [Rescue 40 PCFD] took a hard hit with passing of brother Andrew Fox, 57 years old. We joined together in 1972 as volunteers. He fought hard to get the Hurst Tool as we were a new Rescue at that time. He was a pro at getting victims out of cars and because we had the first tool in tha area many Fire Companys came to the Rescue to see how it worked. He was a Firefighter's Firefighter and a great friend and will be missed by all in the Port Chester Fire Dept. R.I.P. Andy

    1. The focus of this thread is - and rightfully so - the EMS response to an active shooter, not the law enforcement response or their tactics.
    2. EMS should be more proactive and seek out the schools and the law enforcement agencies to develop realistic pre-plans, training, and perhaps most important... exercise the plans and training! We don't exercise our services well at all but that's a topic for another thread. If we in EMS continue to wait for someone else to bring us to the planning table, we may still be waiting when the call comes in.
    3. EMS (and all other resources) should not respond unless dispatched and should respond to the designated staging area only.
    4. EMS needs to be aware that suspects may be exiting the scene with real victims so extreme caution must be exercised at all times. Consider additional PD to support and safeguard the EMS operation until the entire scene is secure.
    5. Recognize that the situation is very dynamic and information may change dramatically and quickly. Be flexible, be safe, and avoid tunnel vision!
    6. Keeping with the all-hazard approach to things, as others have suggested, conduct meaningful MCI training, triage training, and train on how to evacuate patients quickly and safely!
    7. It must be clearly recognized and accepted that PD is in charge of the scene and orders must be followed for everyone's safety, not because of egos or attitudes.
A couple of random thoughts on some of the other comments in this thread:
On the subject of tactical triage, in an active shooter scenario we can't stop to triage, treat or do anything else. The focus must be on eliminating the threat to others and controlling the scene so all the victims (the obvious ones as well as those who may not be readily observed) can be properly treated.
Tactical medics are a great resource and should be commonplace. Unfortunately, for many of the reasons we've heard already they're not (egos, turf, $$$, attitudes).
Tourniquets and quick clot may not be part of BLS protocols but they can (and in many cases are) used by tactical teams.
Good discussion. Thanks for starting this thread!

As a certified flight paramedic I have experience on both the ground CCT and Areomedical side of the house. Yes there have been quite a few crashes in the last few years. I do not want to go into why the flights went down that is for the media. You want to know about doing EMS and being a pilot. All of the areomedical services that I am familiar with separate the pilots and the medical crews. Its actually a safety thing. The pilot should be concentrating on and concerned with flying the aircraft and not with patient care. So my sugestion is that you become a pilot and work on making the areomedical industry as safe as possible and find a job doing EMS/ Critical Care Transport in another service. Air transport has inherent risks all we can do is do the best we,as providers, can to mitigate those risks. I wish you the best of luck in your quest!!
