Hi everyone I wanted to introduce myself.  Im Rob Tillson.  I am on Facebook and originally from NY (Yonkers 1st and then Hyde Park 2nd).  I do collect patches from different departments and do make diecast vehicles in 1:64 scale.  I currently live in Lodi, Ohio and still love the Westchester County area FD / PD / EMS.  I work as an EMT for a private company called Life Care Medical Services.  Thanks for listening to my ramble and hope to be a part of more discussions.

Who cares what he was doing. He was distracted and obviously didn't see a huge red fire truck with flashing lights on it Having the rig protecting the scene basically saved the brothers. This is why using the rig to block the scene is key. Rigs are replaceable the brothers aren't

There's alot of problems with operation north of the washington bridge on the hudson river.  The biggest is the correct rescources.... its not there.  I've seen the police and fire boats on the river.  They can't handle a large to major incident in 5 foot seas.  yes the hudson can and has experienced seas that big and alittle bigger.  Someone needs to get a 50-60 foot steel or alumiun boat similar to what NYPD has. Without a jet drive, either direct drive shafts.  A large 500 to 1500 GPM pump that can also be lined up to send a suction hose over to a vessel with a plumped fire monitor and a portable one. In addition to a manifold set up to run hand lines.  Along with portable pumps, gas, or electric, 3cm and 10cm radars, FLIRR, 2 VHF radios with DSC, ECDIS, DGPS two units, 2 trunk radios (since ems and fire are on different bands), radios for rockland and nyc NYPD avaition and marine units.  Below deck a "med bay" one or two M tanks, BLS supplies minus the drugs. a PAD. Rescue equipment: scoop with vertical and horizontal lifting straps, a PECU (portible exothermix cuting unit), 2 peri-jet dewater, Foam and lots of it. 500 gallon min. with appriorate nozels and attachtments for monitors. standard fire fighting tools, haligan, axes, crowbars, sledge hammers, wedges, cribbing, along with multiple fire extinguishers, co2, dry chem, pkp,

this is just some of the things that should be availible at a moments notice on the hudson river.  think and prepare for the worst...  a loaded barge with gasoline vs a fully loaded ferry in a good storm.   it can happen don't say it can't.    its just a matter of time before agencies along the river get caught with there pants down and its not going to be good. yes FDNY and NYPD will step in but FDNY will take a while to get the big boats up the river, NYPD aviation will be on scene very fast with divers. and the NYPD patrol boats will come too in time, probably faster then the bigger FDNY boats. But there newer boats are fast now, not like the firefighter.

you might say why only receational boats and some tug boats go up and down the river... yes they do along with some commercial ships from time to time.  how will the recources availible now assist a crew of 15 on a ship with a large engine room fire ?  anchor the vessel in the channel? put her in a soft bank? call for tug boats that have barges alongside?

The new tappen zee bridge is going to be higher, that means bigger ships can come up the river.  they will no longer be restricted by air draft, the river is about 30-35 feet deep in the channel in the shoal spots... a litte dregging and that can become 50 feet.   I don't think a massive surge of ships will come up the river but an occationaly a big ship can and more then likely will.  plan on it.

thats my rant for now, mind you i am in the merchant marine, a paramedic, and a vol. fire fighter for some years.

You got to remember that the County Police have many different functions. Not every guy assigned to the Marine Unit is strictly on the Marine Unit. He might be out patrolling the Hutch or out in Cortlandt Manor. Yes, with all the equipment and funding they get you wonder what their actual capabilities are. But, they are out there doing what they can at this time. Nothing wrong with that at all. Also, there is nothing wrong with contacting another agency that has specific units doing this 24/7. The NYPD SCUBA, Harbor, and Aviation Units are doing these tasks around the clock, whether it be in training or on actual calls. They also have the equipment available to them that some agencies don't. Guys assigned to those units are specifically assigned. So, it's not like they are pulling a guy out of the 44 or from Midtown South to come get on a boat or chopper. Not to mention, it builds many different connections for different municipalities, and when you're in need, it really makes the difference having those connections. And like Morningjoe mentioned, the only really capable unit that I know of that can perform these tasks in the County effectively is Yorktown Heights FD Water Rescue Unit. They were out there that morning capable of getting guys in the water and doing a side sonar scan.  And honestly, nothing wrong at all with a volunteer agency taking that initiative to be a great unit like that. I give them a lot of credit for what they got going on up there. But, you also got to remember the basics and what is behind all of this. You need commercial divers and salvage teams to get that tug out. That's not a task that a law enforcement or fire-rescue agency would conduct. Also, the initial minutes were crucial and the Tarrytown Fire Department did a great job getting out there as fast as they did and performing at the level that they did. Technology aside, it goes back to training and having the equipment available to enact a rescue effort, and those things were present that day by the first responding agencies.

The first step is admitting one has a problem, and since agencies can't or won't do that even after the 3rd or 4th tone out.

the leadership in most agencies do not want change!

All you have to do is look within your own departments and see that the number of active members, and I mean real actual active members, is not as many as a couple of years ago, less than a few years ago, even less than a decade ago.  For all the reasons that have been identified within these forums the ranks of volunteers is dwindling.  Certainly the way departments are dispatched affects this.

How many times can you drop what you are doing to respond to an automatic alarm that turns out to be caused by steam from a shower or dust from construction workers? Or to be cancelled before you even get off the ramp?

And, everything now requires an ambulance.  The public has been over educated to dial 9-1-1 for even the most minor maladies.  It seems nobody gets to the hospital under their own steam these days.

Eventually it will have to become all paid.  Since I left Westchester I have lived in three Southern counties that provided paid fire/EMS-Paramedic services.  Palm Beach County has some pretty pricey areas like Westchester but the other two were/are not nearly as wealthy as Westchester.  If they all can provide paid fire/EMS to their citizens, so can Westchester.

And for those who keep bringing up that laws and fire districts and all that prevent changes, well, change the laws for the benefit of the people.  That's what legislatures and legislators are for.

I completely rebuilt the front page of http://www.emtbravo.com/ . Although it looks exactly the same, I cleaned up a lot of the old unused code, upgraded existing code and wrote some new code on the backend. This should also make it render better on mobile devices. I will also be adding more features in the near future.

Can a few of you check it to make sure it's rendering/showing properly? I want to make sure.

    Members,
It's time to kick EMTBravo up a notch.
For the past few months, I've been working on the backend of the site to prepare it for the next generation of software. At first, I hated the new software, because the current software is something I was used to, it worked, and I don't like change. But the more I learned about it, the more I liked it. It will provide a better and easier experience for me running the site, and more importantly, it will provide a better user experience for members using the site (including mobile device options). It will also allow us to add some new features in the future that will help bring EMTBravo.com to the next level.
We've been using this software, which is highly customized for EMTBravo, for over 12 years now, and have upgraded to every version. This makes it difficult, because with every new version we upgrade to, the customizations have to be upgraded as well, which I spend hours coding myself or have to contract out for. Also to note, EMTBravo is hosted on it's own dedicated server.
    What this means for you:
-EMTBravo may be offline for a few hours tomorrow afternoon (Thursday) into early Friday morning while the transition is made. I will work as fast as I can to minimize this downtime.
-When EMTBravo is back online, some features may be temporarily unavailable, and there may be some "bugs". We will keep an open line of communication with members to ensure all bugs are worked out and members can get assistance in using the new site.
-It will look very similar to the site now, and the learning curve should be minimal. You will, however, have tons of options to customize how you use and view the site.
-The new EMTBravo site will be "Responsive", which means you can use the site via computer, tablet, mobile device, and smart TV and it will look and function the same on all devices. For example, you will be able to use the site on your mobile device just as you would on your PC, including posting.
    -Ultimately, a better EMTBravo.com
We will provide updates on this process as needed. Please check our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/emtbravo for updates while we are offline.
Thank you for your patience during this upgrade.

NYS*DOT has apparently been sending letters to agencies along the Taconic State Parkway, indicating they will be adding exit numbers to each exit on the entire parkway, from Kensico to I-90 over the next two years.
Obviously, there will need to be some CAD upgrades to many CAD systems and it's going to take a lot of getting used to for responders.
