Kind of amazed at the level of misinformation presented here. The basic facts are:
The Somers Fire District did originally end the WEMS dispatching contract as of 12/31/13. At their request, they extended the contract twice, currently slated to end 9/30/14. WEMS agreed to this for the benefit of the district and the town. This gives them the needed time to fully switch to 60-Control, which is the current plan. The plan for WEMS is to re-locate our dispatch center to our HQ where it can better be managed at the end of the current contract.
Prior to WEMS being contracted in 2002, SFD employed their own dispatchers. They felt rather than continue to manage staff, it would be beneficial to outsource for personnel. The staff is shared between the two services which saved SFD a considerable amount of money rather than having dedicated dispatchers. In addition to dispatching, the dispatchers provide a considerable number of services including monitoring security cameras for four stations with over a dozen pieces of equipment. They also help manage the LOSAP system, state reporting, and possibly most importantly they provide a 24 hour emergency presence in town, since there is no full time police department. This was well appreciated with the recent storms of the last few years.
The SFD continues to evaluate the costs and benefits of using their own dispatchers, with WEMS, or switching to 60-Control. There's really no "drama" or "controversy".

What about quality not quantity? I just think its a better assessment as far as hall of fame stature goes. The guy who shows up to the most calls isn't always the best fireman, we all know that. So how about a ratio of reputation points to number of posts, who has the most likes per post? Just an idea

  14. x4093k liked a post in a topic by dwcfireman in Firefighter Hazards - Residential Solar Panels
I encountered this problem once at a fire. The house only had three panels, and, of course, they were buried in snow (because forbid that a fire like that one could happen in the summer!). Any way, I found the panels after I stepped on one, slipped a bit, and the sheet of ice slid off of them. Not a single firefighter at the incident knew about them prior to the fire, and you would never know about the panels because they were on the roof facing away from the road. And, no, I was not injured in the incident.
Where am I going with this? PREPLANNING! As I found out after the fire, I was able to go to the town hall and get a list of residences that have solar panels installed on the roof. It was a bit of a help (at the time it was a whopping four houses), but at least we knew that at least four houses in the district had solar panels.
Now to what I'm really getting to....Solar panels are always on! ALWAYS! That means they are always collecting and storing electrical energy. Well, there are a few other electrical sources we should worry about, too. Some homes and businesses have their own wind mills, harnessing the constant power of air movement to create electricity. And, some homeowners (albeit few) have their own hydroelectric generators. There are plenty of options available today for alternative power sources, different makes and models, and even mixtures of sources. We, the fire service, are a little behind on this technology in a couple of ways. More importantly, we don't realize the dangers involved with these power sources, and we need to recognize the dangers and learn as much as possible about them, just in the same form that we need to know building construction. I for one will be checking out the links that RWC130 and 16fire5 have provided us.
The other idea that came to mind, about being behind on this technology, is why don't firehouses look into this for powering the stations? A long term investment on alternative power can give you a few extra dollars towards an operating budget, which could help buys extra gear or some new tools. I'm not pushing the "Green Alternative," rather an idea that came to mind while writing the above. I'm sure taxpayers would love the idea as well.

We did lose a few items that are irreplaceable. As many know we lost our '43 Willys. We lost some memorabilia from the Rec Room, however a good majority was able to be recovered. The majority of the things we lost were completely replaceable. We lost approx 30 sets of turnout gear, with the remaining being sent out for testing. HUGE THANKS goes out to car 2443 for recovering our 100+ year old "Golden's Bridge Fire Department" sign from our meeting room. It was on the original firehouse when it opened and is probably one of the most important historic pieces in the firehouse currently.
We are already making progress in leaps and bounds. The restoration company, SoundShore Restorations out of Bedford Hills, has done a phenomenal job and has made the process as easy as possible for us. Their guys have been at GBFD scrubbing, wiping and mopping basically non stop since monday evening. They have assured us that by the end of this business week, that the remaining side of the engine bay will be cleaned to the point that you wont even be able to tell there was a 2 alarm fire in the building. when I left last night, I was able to see the white paint on the ceiling and the nasty puke green walls are back to being the nasty puke green walls. They literally have an army of workers there round the clock. as i counted yesterday, the total neared 40 workers. which doesn't even include plumbers, electricians, engineers and architects.
Currently "the neighbors" are housing our apparatus. We are waiting on a semi-permanant structure being transported from Tennessee, which will house all remaining equipment. For anyone whos familiar, it s the same building Katonah FD had out behind their firehouse while they were under renovation. As it stands now E-139 and Marine 25 are being housed in Katonah, E-138 & E-140 are being housed in Croton Falls Sta. 2 and T-1 is being housed in South Salem.
Also, there was a huge Interior attack initiated at this fire. Operations went exterior only for a small period of time after a partial collapse, however after deemed that it was safe to re-enter, the interior attack was re-established. The Master stream from TL-57 as well as the deck gun on E-149 were utilized after the collapse to darken down the free burning fire. The roof was constructed out of tri-bearing wood trusses. however the engine bays luckily, and unknown to us, had a double redundant walls. the first layer is 4 inch solid concrete block, which covered 2 inch styrofoam insulation board, which covered at least a 12 inch thick structural reinforced poured concrete wall.

About 5 years ago when my oldest was in 6th grade, we (Somers FD EMS) did a thing, just one day, for just her class. We talked about a lot of stuff: FD and EMS as a career path, as a volunteer in the community, and drug abuse. This was so well received that it became a two day( one fire day, one EMS day), 4 times a year event (health classes change quarterly). While not focusing specifically on drug issues, we fit it in the message that there are two ways to spend a lot of time on an ambulance- as an EMT, or as a drug user. Not a big deal, but if we all worked a tiny bit on this, the end effect could be a positive change.
