QuoteWhen love ignited, Garfield Fire Company 1 volunteer members Paul Mellor and Danielle Szep were proud to incorporate their fire department turncoats on their wedding invitations.
They posted on Facebook part of the wedding invitation that showed their names on the back of their fire department coats. Along with the well wishes and Facebook "likes" also came something that surprised them, a threat of suspension from their fire department chief.

Spring Valley bond for fire gear may need to be revoted
A bond passed in Spring Valley last month that would help the village's fire department update equipment was written incorrectly and will likely force the village to miss state-imposed deadlines for serious public health violations.

This is just another example of the County Executive Astorino saying one thing and doing another. He wants to make all these promises, he needs to keep them.

QuoteTYRONE, Okla. — On Monday, March 7, Tyrone Fire Chief Anthony Adams resigned.
Following Adams' resignation, he cited "too much politics to continue." He reported this to his crew of 12 firefighters, who also decided to put in their resignations.

QuoteNEW YORK (WABC) --Designs for a new high-rise condominium in Manhattan are raising all sorts of concerns because the plans call for the structure to be built with something that's been outlawed since the 19th century.

QuoteMOUNT VERNON - It was a stark statistic that helped city officials justify the emergency need to hire new firefighters.
Thirty-five of the department's 119 firefighters and officers — an astounding 29 percent, or nearly one in three — were reportedly unavailable to work, on injury leave awaiting disability retirements
One problem, though. The numbers were misleading at best, wrong at worst.
In fact, there are actually 123 firefighters in the department. And the 35 who are "out" included eight who retired or transferred from the department last year, and others working on light duty.

QuoteThe city is misleading the public with rosy statistics on how quickly firefighters get to emergencies, according to a new report released Monday by the Uniformed Firefighters Association.
Union officials charged the discrepancy is especially glaring in the Bronx, where the city claims in 2015 firefighters responded to medical emergencies in an average of 4 minutes and 44 seconds while it was actually 9 minutes and 6 seconds.

Why is it that Mount Vernon FD has the right idea?
QuoteThomas said his administration was assessing the potential for the Mount Vernon fire department to provide ambulance services.
“Mount Vernon needs to invest in itself and provide basic ambulance services," he said.

QuoteKINGSTON >> A 19th-century firehouse in the city’s Rondout district will close next month, Mayor Steve Noble says.
Noble said in an email that the city-owned Rapid Hose Company 1 building at 85 Hone St. will be shut down by the end of March and probably be put on the auction block.
Kingston Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Gleason said the two active members of Rapid Hose are Acting Capt. Joseph Prout and Aaron Bridges.

I was referencing something I had heard that WCDES is developing FAST requirements for departments. This includes leadership, initial training, ongoing minimum response levels and equipment. Similar to the definitions of the CAD Valid Unit Designations.
For example, if this were to come to be, how would WCDES be able to monitor the department for compliance, and if they didn't comply, what would be that action? Would 60 Control take them off the run card as FAST? Even if a Chief requested that departments FAST specifically?

Has anyone heard about WCDES developing requirements for a FAST?
If so, what would they be and how would they be enforced?

QuoteBOSTON – A Boston Fire Department District Chief has been found guilty on procurement fraud and larceny charges in connection with two illicit schemes to enrich himself, Attorney General Maura Healey announced today.
Between 2008 and 2011, Scigliano used two separate schemes to enrich himself, including one in which he profited from checks from an emergency vehicle vendor that did business with the BFD, and another scheme to personally profit from items purchased by an equipment vendor used to supply the department.
The investigation revealed that Scigliano personally profited from checks from Greenwood Emergency Vehicles, Inc. (Greenwood), a fire apparatus and ambulance dealership that supplied fire trucks to the BFD. He was the principal contact between the BFD and Greenwood with regard to the acquisition of fire trucks.

QuoteThe Mount Pleasant police department thought it was getting a bargain when they hired a new officer in 2014 who was a fresh graduate of the New York Police Department’s training academy.
But now the New York City is suing the town to recoup the cost of training that officer.
New York City filed a lawsuit against Mount Pleasant in Westchester County court on Feb. 11 in order to get back $47,670 in expenses related to training ex-NYPD officer John Kardian, according to court filings.

A half-dozen Mount Vernon firefighters were rushed to the hospital Monday night after conditions at a firehouse made them sick.
City officials believe it was a backed sewage system in the basement causing the problem.
Deputy Fire Commissioner Ernie Richardson says the pipes backed up, and for hours firefighters were exposed to the smell of raw sewage coming from the basement.

Some research over the past few years has started to show a link between fighting fires, and an increased rate of cancer. Firefighters in Schenectady are encouraged to clean their gear after fires, to keep them free of contaminants. But that cleaning process takes hours and when a fire call comes in, firefighters have to go.
"It's not uncommon for us to have two structure fires in one shift," said Schenectady Fire Chief Ray Senecal.
Chief Senecal said that just about a year ago, the city spent about a quarter million dollars to buy all firefighters a second set of gear. One to wear when the other is dirty or in the wash.

Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas met with the city council and fire department about funding the salaries of five new firefighters. He says there is money available in the general fund and it would not impact taxpayers.
Last year, five firefighter positions were defunded and the hiring process delayed when a decreased budget was passed.
Thomas urged the council to act fast or the city may not be eligible to receive new firefighters from the training academy until January 2017.

How and what did they damage that made replacing the truck a better option?
From my understanding, and I might have the chronology wrong, it went to a place to get repaired, that did not have the capabilities or qualified staff to repair it. They actually did more damage to the truck. It sat outside for 2 years while a decision was made about what to do with it. It then finally went to Seagrave to get repaired and refurbished, and the Commissioners did want to pay for it. Eventually, Seagrave put it up for sale, and another department picked up a fully refurbished Aerialscope for $600,000. Pleasantville, meanwhile, was without a ladder for a couple of years, until the current KME Tower was purchased for close to a million.
Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.
