I myself stopped checking this site frequently a while ago. When I saw this topic I couldn't agree more. What drove this site in the early years was that buffs (and I say that in a positive way. all of us in emergency service are buffs. Just some little more then others.) was that all fires and big incident were listed. Those of us not near a scanner or too far north or too far south could read updates and get some photos. Now when you have FB and Twitter with up to date fire wires or emergency wire (nyc fire wire, kempter and Westchester fire wire constantly updating from emergency personnel in the field. Especially since smart phones make it easy to check and post on social media, this site died. Majority of people that were here wanted updates on incidents so social media changed that. Then the volly vs career in every topic killed things. Then asking for money and Seth having problems personally and publicly added to it. Many people seem to have a problem with the founder. Many people left and abandoned the site. The list of the usernames is misleading now. A few years ago I messaged and asked to delete my old username and stated why. I got no reply from Seth or any admin after several messages to them. So that sealed it for me and I noticed the decline was in full swing anyway. I created my current name. When I check and see something worth reading maybe I'll post. But more and more to me the site is dead.

Who wants to sit here and have a pissing match with people about the same stuff over and over again. Im currently pursing my masters in a specialty aspect of medicine and the forum I am on is amazing...why ? Because we push each other to try different things and we can ask for and get amazing advice from the 11,000 or so members instead of it getting derailed by someone with a piss poor attitude. Everyone that is in this particular specialty loves their job and we are always trying to find new and better ways to do it. Do we disagree on certain things, well yea. Not everyone is going to like what you say, but there is an exceptional level of professionalism on that forum that isn't anywhere to be seen here.
Unfortunately, here it's always the same stuff and the same people with the same crappy attitudes, who wants to deal with that ? Not me. It's sad to see this site become a shadow of its former self.

I stopped checking in as regularly because I get tired of ten new dead end thread topics starting every day. Usually just to announce a new TV show or something else that invites no follow up discussion. I still chime in when it's a thoughtful discussion or when there's useful information I'd like to try and share, but in general there's too much clutter. It's good to post job filings for people to see but do they have to all have their own thread? Kind of like all the new apparatus postings got consolidated into one thread, can't that be done? I still enjoy some of the good discussion here, but it's increasingly becoming more and more like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

I used to check this site more when the incident threads were up to date. There was a time when it seemed like at three in the afternoon or three in the morning emtbravo had good, detailed posts about every fire or pin job (anything significant where mutual aid was called). I work in an office where I can't monitor the pager all day so it was really great to know what was going on in the county. No one ever posts these anymore so I don't bother checking this as my resource. Now I check lohud or my local paper instead.
For me, the threads always turned into one of the following...
    1. Career vs. Volunteer arguments
    2. Everyone patting each other on the back for no reason
    Boooorrrrrriiiiiiinnnnnnnggggggg!
Plus, I kept getting put on moderator watch where my posts had to be approved before they went into the threads for having unpopular opinions. For a past volunteer who is now getting back into it again I have very anti-emergency services views because I think that the volunteer fire system here in Westchester is seriously broken and am in favor of consolidation. That said, just because my opinions are negative and unpopular does not mean that they are wrong. When I sent a note to Seth asking why I was being censored he did not even bother to respond. So i seldom waste my time anymore.

why ??? in this case 4000 reasons... and from sympathomedic calculations, to save 5 maybe 6 minutes ??? really ?? logic is where ?
In my clueless opinion, is not worth it.. Sorry if you think differently then me, but every time I get behind the wheel of an apparatus, I am concerned for the safety of my crew behind me all the idiots, friends and family on these roads I am traveling... shouldn't every driver think like that? STOP kidding your self... public safety is job # 1 and going through a red light is not safe for the general public...
M'ave - this is not NYC, where traveling blocks can take a long time with the traffic, ( Might you I do not have allot of experience in driving down there, but have discussed it with many drivers )so if it what they want to do, so be it... they are FDNY ... and I have read back through this discussion and it seems split of the YES and NO's here... so are we really reading the same thing...
Look if you really feel RLS are needed for mutual aid, so be it, but god help you if your in an accident and someone is killed for a mutual aid stand by... the lawyers will have a field day with it.
From this incident, has the department kept or changed their policy on RLS for coverage calls ?

Please don't have any accidents, kill any innocent motorists, or maim any children in min-vans because you're on the way to someone else's firehouse to drink their coffee.

About time someone pulled the curtain back to expose the charade. How many other departments in the county can't meet the NFPA or OSHA standards for minimum staffing yet think they're OK?

They're still not going to be sending enough if they hire four whole guys. Wow.
Just kicking the can down the road. Sooner our later our luck is going to run out and there's going to be a 100% preventable tragedy. We will all call the unwitting victims "hero" and don our spiffy parade uniforms to salute their hearse but we won't fight against the problem that's making them vulnerable now. It's a travesty.

National Guard is operating in the area in a logistical and support capacity.

Kid, are you old enough to drive yet?
300 lbs of iron sticking out of the ground isn't enough? Gimme a break.....

Please explain to me how the individuals in either of those photos could have gone without noticing the hydrants.
In the first photo, the driver had to parallel park. Either the driver closed his/her eyes and relied on divine intervention to guide their car in reverse, or he/she saw the hydrant in the rear view mirror while backing up.
In the second photo, the driver is parked JUST far enough forward that the driver's side door won't hit the hydrant when it is opened. I suppose that was simply a stroke of good luck?
Stop making excuses. People don't care because they are lazy and self important.

EmsFirePolice .....You have got to be one of the dumbest people on this site to make a comment like that . You obviously are in a dept. where there is not alot of fires and issues like this . When you work in a big city where this is an issue , maybe you'll understand. And trying to blame the city for not enough parking ?? Come on !!!
  13. calhobs liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Car Blocked hydrants
If their were fewer cars this wouldn't be an issue. Most cities were built 100-200 years before cars.
Even if their was more parking, if this was the cheapest or most convenient space, someone would park there.
  14. calhobs liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Car Blocked hydrants
Their are plenty of parking garages, to many drivers feel they should not have to pay for parking and these "spaces" have no meters.

Another fantastic example of the self-importance and blame projection of modern society: "I don't have to follow the rules. Its the city's fault I had to block lifesaving safety equipment."

The "alert" from NYC was for "trace" accumulation. If they put out an alert for a trace amount, what are they going to do when it really snows???

From the governor down, the highest (state) goverment officials operate "contrary to state law" , not to mention the state and US constitution. Do you honestly think they care about whether or not a particular ambulance in their prince's parade has the proper piece of paper?

Random Photo I found. I think Station was featured in a 1970's movie, I think it was called "Firehouse"?

I do not know how many residents will be on the list, but I do know that for our tests their are 100's and we have never gotten to them. That is the norm.

All members of the Special Response Team are trained to use ALL of the equipment that Grant's (read your tax dollars) have purchased. Its not like we purchased a Rescue, that has to put a piece of apparatus out of service to staff. As far as tax money goes, who do you think pays for all of our equipment? Did the Echo Bay project have money trees grown to aquire equipment and personel? Bottom of da Hill, as far as the County needed more pieces of equipment, don't you think the tax payers could do with a few less firehouses to pay for in Tarrytown?

Having worked for STAT Flight and two other air medical programs, I can hopefully offer some useful tidbits to this discussion.
The helicopter is a resource like any other. It is supposed to provide faster transport and a higher level of care. If either of those will help your patient, then use it. There is VERY good evidence to show that two things are happening right now with helicopters. 1) getting patients to LEVEL ONE trauma centers quickly and efficiently helps them. 2) there is some overuse of aircraft leading to patients being discharged within 24 hours of arrival to the receiving facility.
The days of mechanism based transport should be done, just like mechanism based treatment. So, think. Will using the a/c benefit your patient? Will it get them there faster? I have done flights 6 miles from the med center. Stupid. It takes longer to fly in that case. I can tell you though, it's really tough for a number of different reasons to show up at a scene and not take the patient.
There are a number of STAT Flight horror stories from the early years. They made some poor choices in their staffing model and did not adequately train their crews as to the mission in the eyes of the pre hospital providers. Gotta ask your customers what THEY expect. There is a great photo somewhere of Air 1 on the sprain running with a patient in the back all by themselves. Rest of the wreck had cleared. ALL OF IT. and there they were stabilizing the patient as the capt said. Dumb. But, they thought they were doing the right thing. In a way, they were. In a way, they weren't.
Enough rambling. Peekskill may or may not be a good spot for a/c usage. Waiting for life star from CT with a patient who is lying in the road, prolly not. Load and go, do your best on the way.
