Just wondering where were the Westchester and Rockland helicopters? Why did NYC have to come up to the TZB again?
Was it really a seamless integrated response or was it the usual Rockland command, Westchester Command, everyone does their own thing on the water response?

While I too am a proud volunteer, not only of my department, I think proper credit is due to all responders on this incident. This was a multi agency effort, volunteer and career. Everyone acted professionally, and cooperated with each other to the best of everyone's ability. I've never seen so many agencies operating at one incident on the Hudson. Kudos to all!

I agree with Benz. Despite what a lot of guys say, it IS sometimes about the money. Yes, we still do things for our communities, especially on our days off but when the rubber meets the road, there is still food to be put on the table and a mortgage to be paid. Although I was capable of doing something different with my life, I chose this life. I'm grateful for my defined benefits, and grateful for a flexible schedule. I'm also grateful for never spending a day in the firehouse without laughing at/with somebody or something. This isn't a job you just "kick the tires" at. There are other people behind you on the list that are willing to put their 20+ years in. Taking the job to "just go around the block" isn't fair to the municipality that paid for you to go to probie school and it certainly isn't fair to those who want to be in it for the long haul.

Guys - the YFD AND the YPD both ARE EMS, with the YFD obviously more prominent a provider.

    That's entirely incorrect.

Trust me, people feel that it's ok to pull up to a marked car and talk and text so they aren't going to be on the lookout for unmarked cars.
These cars are purchased from the state contract and the prices to the PD are not as costly as it is to the general public.
Even if they are a few inches higher, they are patrol vehicles and will be used for other purposes, not just traffic enforcement. The NYSP is always obtaining new vehicles and these will just be a little higher.
The increased summons revenue will help pay for many of these vehicle.
Lastly, if this idea is one of the dumbest thing you've heard since being on this site then you obviously don't read some of the posts that carefully.

    A few others:

I have seen a few that got 2 reels and 100' trashline, but most do not have the space.

And rumor has it that because of the tilt it was out of service more than in.
Tough to justify an additional $30,000 for that feature.

just had 4 guys from Detroit Fd in last week not a lot of surround and drown, more like 3 - 5 fires a shift and get your ass kicked. And for no money, and now no city pension. More like a 401-k. Shame what the city has done to that dept. And you don't try to be a firefighter for a couple of years, it isn't like buying a car to see if you like it.

Lets see if I can answer that
    1. they are too heavy
    2. we don't have enough people on the fire ground to do it
    3. last time we did it, the guys complained that it was too much work.
    4. we almost dropped it so we put it back.
    5. I don't like heights.
prob the most under utilized tool on the rig. When I watch a dept to throw up ladder at the fire academy you can always tell who trains with them, and who looks like a monkey #$%%$$#@ a football.

All tower ladders, huh? Is everyone afraid of a straight stick?
With nothing but towers in the neighborhood, you're limiting your capabilities.

It ain't about the height.....it's the REACH.
And with a majority of SFD's in the suburbs and rural districts being set back from the roadway, even 75' is too short, as my department has seen all too often.

I agree, but if Greenville were to put a truck on automatic response for structure related calls, they would be used maybe a couple of times a year.
Just for clarification for everyone, were are talking about Greenville in Orange County, about 10 minutes outside of Port Jervis. A very rural district that would see a significant decrease in calls if they didn't cover a part of Route 84
