' I have been down there alot lately and have seen trucks and stuff that looks brand new too... there is a scene support truck too? looks like a 10 wheeled modified box truck with a 4 person cab... i can't say for sure i didn't take a really good luck at it... but it would be nice to know what is there if we need it... why can't the tech rescue guys or hazmat guys staff it as a volunteer thing? just get it there type of thing ? '
    Letter To Legislators Burrows, Burton, Harckman, Myers, Nonna, Rogowsky, Ryan ;
As A Member Of The Public Safety & Security Committee I'd Like You To Be Aware That An Enormous Amount Of Federal Funds And Taxpayer Dollars ( Millions + ) Were Spent On Vehicles For Westchester County DES At Grasslands Reservation And MOST Of These Are Housed In A Special Garage Collecting Dust Because They Can NOT Be Manned Or Were NOT Needed. Numerous Attempts By Fire Service Personnel To Inquire How These Vehicles Can Be Special Called And/Or Utilized Were Met With SILENCE. This Is A Misuse Of Taxpayer $$$$ And Federal Funds And Someone Should Be Held Accountable For This Horse & Pony Show Before The Media Is Involved In An In-Depth Investigation. i.e. 1) A Field Communications Unit And Paid Lieutenant That ONLY Appear At Parades And Public Safety Expos Rather Than Responding To Major Fires, Etc. 2) Scene Support Trailers That Have Been Parked For 6+ Months And NO ONE Can Explain Their Purpose. 3) Collapse Rescue & Support Vehicles That Haven't Logged 500 Miles Since Being Purchased From A Long Island Fire Department.

The 1960 Mack Quad was assigned to Station #5 on Stratton Rd.
Was staffed with a driver, officer, 2 engine men and 2 ladder men the 4 "backstep men" road 2 on each side.

1962 Mack Engine #5 assigned to Station #2

1962 Mack Engine #2 assigned to Station #2
Note this is the same unit as #5 above after the city renumbered all of the rigs.

1965 Mack Engine #6 assigned as the Squad
Note this unit carries Puple K in the jump seats.

1969 Ward LaFrance assigned to station #3. Was referbished in the mid 1980's adding a roof. Sold in 1989 to Eastchester FD.

That was the reason for my original post asking if WCDES's Field Comm/Mobile Command Unit was requested, dispatched or used on the job. While it was met with responses that equaled "we had a coffee maker already" or "D&D was open" (not pointing fingers, humor is a great thing), my curiosity was that with so many discussions always pointing toward proper ICS and scene safety why was a "tool" not used. Was it overlooked? Was it felt to be a hindrance? Was 60 Control not able to staff and respond? or Was it my sandbox, my tools, I give the orders? Let me finish by saying I am not looking for fights or hurt feelings and have absolutely no stake in the million dollar toy that collects more dust than mileage, I am just interested in the thought process that would not consider a Mobile Command/Field Comm unit an asset on such a large operation. Lets face it the IC did a great job regardless.

  13. PCFD ENG58 liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Flashpoint: Union stand on volunteers doesn't hold water
And after massive lobbying efforts the volunteers convinced the state to make that illegal. Now how many volunteers did that generate? 10? 20? If the same effort was put into recruiting the results could have equalled or been even greater.
Lets consider how much impact we might be talking about. In NYS there are approximatly 1,800 fire depts. Approximatly 1,700 are 100% volunteer. The remaining 100 are career or combo and range in size from 4 career to 11,000 career (FDNY). There are approximatly 18,000 career firefighters. Since FDNY does not prevent it and other depts also do not, we are talking about 6,000 fireifghters state wide. My dept. at most about 10% volunteer in other depts. So lets say 20% of career FF's might volunteer if this rule is preventing them. Thats 1,500 firefighters or 0.8 firefighters per dept. If you think that 0.8 additional firefighters per dept will solve the massive volunteer shortage you have bigger issues.
The IAFf has an obligation to ensure it's members welfare and in most cases its not the IAFF but the municipality that does not want its employees to volunteer. Based on the previous numbers. the average volunteer community has fewer than 1 career firefighter as a resident. Its not the IAFF that may be forcing the community to hire firefighters its the other 5,000 - 20,000 residence that are not stepping up to the plate.
If the standards are not the same and the ratings are not the same and the response is not the same we do not do the same job. Inclusion in the IAFF will not solve the fact that volunteer groups like FASNY continue to lobby for reduced training standards and to reduce the requirements for minimum response standards (NFPA 1720).
We would have a unified voice if the volunteer lobbying effort would stop fighting against every standards the career fire service has fought for.

The issues on the front page should be corrected.
I know this forum, once we get everything going and fine tuned, will be a success. I'd like to thank Eli for all the work he's put in.
Again, and this goes for the entire site, we all need to pitch in to make this a great site. The content is only as good as the members who contribute threads and reply to threads or posts.

    Members,
We are proud to announce our newest staff members:
efdcapt115: efdcapt115 will take a new "Mentor" position, and work with individual members as needed, one on one, through PM and phone calls. He will not be a Moderator, but someone to guide and help our members.
In addition, he will also work with me and the team on developing new ideas for the site, to help it grow in popularity, and to provide an ever increasing data base of knowledge and information. George has an excellent way with our members, and he is full of great ideas for the site.
George has served as a career firefighter in the Eastchester Fire District, where he attained the rank of Captain and worked for numerous years. He also has written several succesful grants for the department. He is now retired due to an illness.
FDNY 10-75: Some of you may have noticed that Eli (FDNY 10-75) has been added as a Moderator. He actually has been a Moderator since we consolidated the EMTBravo Upstate forums into this board. He had been serving in an advisory position and should have been marked as a moderator.
Eli is extremly knowledgable and well known throughout the "Enthusiast" community, and he is the photographer and webmaster behind http://www.10-75.net. He works as a dispatcher for a PD and as a Medic.
He will primarily be responsible for the "Apparatus Coming Soon" category, as well as verifying our Upstate Incident Alerts and Upstate forum, amongst helping out wherever else needed.
We thank and welcome these creative minds to our team!
Seth Granville on behalf of the entire EMTBravo team

It is with regret to announce the passing of Josephine Harris. Josephine was confined to a wheel chair trapped on the upper floors of one of the Towers on 9/11. The FDNY Members of Ladder 6 were coming down the many flights of stairs when they came upon Josephine who was unable to go down those stairs. As the members of Ladder 6 approached her, she said for them to leave her, and just save themselves. Of course the members of Ladder 6 did NOT do that. Instead they all took turns carrying her down the many flights of stairs. Then with only a few more flights to go, the entire 110 Story Tower came down on them. Trapping Josephine and those Ladder 6 Members. Later they were all rescued and of course Josephine was very Thankful to those FDNY Members.
The History Channel did a story on those FDNY Members and Josephine, along with a few others that survived that day. That story is called "Countdown to Ground Zero". It is now on DVD featuring Josephines story. She was certainly a hero that day and offered herself to stay back for the safety of others.
May you Rest in Peace Josephine Harris. You were a Hero as far as I am concerned, along with those Firefighters from Ladder 6 who carried you down those many flights of stairs to safety.
