  1. Couldn't agree with you more. This is definately a close call. Glad he is alright.
  2. NRFD, You must have an older scanner. Just enter in the who frequency as is and it will take. It will not show up on the readout on the screen.
  3. I founds this on Firehouse.com today. I'm pasting the article below. Firehouse.com Home > News Headlines Flaming Mouse Story Doused Updated: 01-11-2006 05:04:47 PM Story by thenewmexicochannel.com A small town rumor that sparked world wide interest about a mouse burning down a house has been found to be untrue. After 81-year-old Chano Mares's house burned down Saturday in Fort Sumner, news services picked up the quirky story. "Flaming Mouse Burns Down House" read the headline over an Associated Press story that appeared on TheNewMexicoChannel.com, for example. According to the initial report, Mares threw the critter in a pile of burning leaves near his home, but it ran back to the house on fire. A local firefighter said the mouse ran to just beneath a window and the flames spread up the window and throughout the house. All contents of the home were destroyed, but no one was injured. Interest in fires has been high lately. Unseasonably dry and windy conditions have charred more than 53,000 acres and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks. The mouse story, however, has been doused by Mares. "It's really humorous more than anything that a mouse burned down the house," he told KOAT-TV. Thing is, the mouse was dead when it hit the burning leaves. Mares said he trapped and killed the critter and tossed it on the fire. The flames, he said, probably reached his house because they were driven by high winds. Capt. Jim Lyssy of the Fort Sumner Fire Department said the rumor probably got started because there was "a little too much excitement" at the time of the fire. Mares lost everything -- and has no insurance -- but the mouse story still makes him smile. "I started laughing, and I'll be laughing from now on," he said. "It's silly." 4. Just FYI All Radio Shacks radios are made by GRE.
  5. DPL's came about I think in the 80's or 90's (maybe earlier) to give two-way radio users "more" channels. Another words if you have a large city or regional system that has four separate channels, with PL's you can make more user end channels so they don't interfere with a neighboring department. When the regional radio coordinators started to run out of options, the radio manufacturers started to create the DPL's since there was no more PL space and new technology was available. The PL's are an analog, inaudible frequency that the radio listens for when you transmit. The DPL's are the same but use more modern circuitry. You can tell the difference between PL's and DPL's. PL's usually are two to three numbers with one number after the decimal point. An example would be the PL of 123.0 (this is a real PL's number ) A DPL is always three numbers and can start with a "0". A couple of examples for this is 074 or 331. Most scanner books may add the letter "D" before a DPL number so a reader will know the difference. Hope this helps you out a little on the history of it. Also as always if I missed something or my info is wrong let me know. Thanks!
  6. YonkersR3, Don't you mean rearmount? Only reason why I ask is that Hank from NEFEA said the two new ones were going to be the UT-100's, same as the other two Smeals. Wouldn't the third be a "triplicate" to those or did plans change again. I'm only going by what was told to me when we went with Hank out to the plant in mid December (of course the 3rd ladder wasn't announced yet that it was being built) I'm just confused. Hopefully they will start them soon and I can get a couple of shots of them when I'm at the plant at the end of January / begining of February again.
  7. Maybe because of the additional ladder company being organized and they might re-assign an older one there? Just a though. I think there was something about that in another thread here. I may be wrong.
  8. Hopefully I'll get to go this year to at leat one of the following Ireland Spain Key West California Las Vegas Texas
  9. It was on the Discovery Channel, really good story for what they had to work with since much of it was unknown and they only had to go by pre-flight, phone calls and the data recorder.
  10. Should have never dropped it since Ford was keeping the Mustang. In fact the Camero body style toward the rear almost looks similar to the 'stang. Maybe it's just me. Hopefully it will perform well and maybe we'll see a new Firebird again from Pontiac????? Good to see the Camero come back.
  11. I've always wondered that too. It works though. In interested. Also I know the whole paint scheme was something to do with the fact of a chief likeing having the black top over a car or truck. I'm not sure it that was a canvas or a hard top though. Same with the green lights, something to do with port / starboard lights from ships. I really am interested in all of Chicago's history and traditions. Should be a good topic.
  12. And to think we been using the term "it was a mouse with matches" for all these years LOL
  13. Thanks for the correction, I just realized how I wrote it. My Bad
  14. I think CT is spending money to replace the cars on the New Haven Line, when I don't know/ It has been in the news recently. I know some guys in the New Haven shop. I'll ask if the news rumors are true next time I see them.
  15. Hi-Rises and water supply since they are house with a Satellite Unit each are two I can think of.
  16. OK so before you start ripping my head off, OH WAIT TO LATE!!!! Next Time ASK if I miss quoted myself!!!! I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE GUYS IN THE DEPARTMENT, not the political BS that the town is giving them. Furthermore The mass exodus is being caused by what you said RETIREMENTS and NOT FILLING IN THOSE SPOTS! They have a lot of members that are over 20 years that are retiring beacuse they are a frraind of loosing thier pentions. How many other union guys in this state have retired over that..... A Lot. Hey how many financially strapped Departments are in CT???? ALL OF THEM. Also they are a busy town and a lot of people like to be active to an extent. Another Question.. do you work for them or have you just read what was in the papers and see what was on tv? For talk to a couple of them, they lover there job but not the towns BS. THANK YOU
  17. FDNY never used Hales except for the ALF (Hale built pumps) on the Century series pumpers. All the Mack, Ward 79/Macks, and Seagraves were Waterous. As for the older pumpers from the 50's and before, depended on the company. The were a big Ahrens-Fox and Ward Lafrance department too in the early 1900's.
  18. There are some pictures and other information at http://www.firefightinglinks.com/ It's done by a Waterbury firefighter and there is some cool stuff there. Waterbury just put into service less than a year ago and ALF 95 ft. (I think) MM tower ladder. Also to they have had alot of trouble over the years with the city over contract issues and and problems with thier buildings. Hopefully they will be resolved but you know how politicians are. The are a good town to work for and are busy especially with i-84 and Rt-8 running through them. There is no residency law for them that I know of except hat you have to live in CT. The Department runs 9 Engine Companies, 3 ladders and a Rescue Engine Comapny (They run an engine with the heavy rescue though the engine is not used. Something to do with the contract. I don't know if this is still the case with them. Before my friend retired as a Lieutenant from Rescue Engine 9 some 5 to 7 years ago, the engine carried no hose on it and had two firefighters on the truck, the other 4 to 5 guys rode the heavy rescue. Not exactly sure why this is so or if this happens any more). Unfortunately, WFD operates on a LTR Multi-Net city wide trunk system and cannot be heard by a trucking scanner. When they used to be on the high band, you could hear them almost anywhere in CT and Eastern NY. Good luck to all who decide to take the yest, I'll see you there.
  19. Do you know if there is a PL setting or is it just CSQ (carrier squelch) being used?
  20. Big truck, Big Water, you all better have one heck of a wetdown!! Good Luck with the new unit!
  21. There is one in North Eastern CT, I don't know which company has it, I'll look it up
  22. Cool Thanks Yah Mike was classic Mike up here to about 3 years ago. But you know what he brought a lot of valid points up with alot of trucks, not just aerials. He's got a wealth of knowledge. Thanks again
  23. In the AM, McD's cause of the hash browns!! Lunch in NY - White Castle. But if any of you come up into CT, look for Duchess, really good food there man, way better than Wendy's. I think there is one in Stamford now. But you can find them in Bridgeport of 95, Ansonia off route 8, Milford off exit 40. Good eats there.
  24. Hey Capt. Well being an Irishman, I have to answer that question with a question. How does a firehouse get a coffee or lunch fund going? Simple, we put money from our own pockets back into the company so we can get an "add on" so to speak. Where does this money come from? Simple, yearly dues, sale of snacks and soft drinks, and company social events for members. We do not use any public donations for "cosmetic" applications. Any public donations are put to use what we advertise trying to raise. Public donations would go mostly to simple up keep of the quarters all the way to buying a piece of equipment that would be utilized for public saftey. So in short, when I say the company should pay for it, I am saying the funds should come from the membership's pockets. Spending public donations for "cosmetic" stuff has always been a no no here. Public monies has always been spent for up keep of equipment and purchasing new equipment. Hope this clears up what I meant.
  25. 210 and everyone else Our new truck is going to be Black over Dark red (it's as dark as the old American LaFrance red). I saw the truck last week at the mfg. I'll post it when it comes in in February.
