  1. My question exactly. Although to be fair I have no idea what kind of numbers they have for volly's in Larchmont. But I must say this, if they are able to cobble together a crew it is absolutely irresponsible to me that they don't let volly's drive the apparatus IMHO. And keep your "they're not trained to do it" nonsense. No offense to all you stellar drivers out there, but a monkey can be trained to operate a rig, so there's no excuse why firefighters...yes even volly firefighters...aren't.

Perhaps it is in the firefighters union contract that they can drive?

  2. What also is troubling to me as a retired correction officer is that the media refers to the officers who work in the prison as guards. They are correction officers and are trained law enforcement professionals who do a tough job dealing with the killers, rapists, thieves, and drug dealers on a daily basis. Most people could not do this job I have seen many quit not too long after the got into the facility. Guards don't get spit on, assaulted, threatened, etc.

  3. To be fair she is a DOC employee, just not a CO. I don't think we've seen the last head roll over this one.

I believe there are more involved than just her. This was a well thought out plan that had to involve people who had access to the tools. Civilian movement is limited ( at least where I used to work) so it is unlikey she had access to a shop or room where the tools are stored without help. They have to establish a chain of events as to what hands were the tools passed through untill they got into the hands of the inmates. Somehow they knew the layout of the pipe chases behind the cells, the direction of the pipes, and where the manhole cover was. It could take time before they truly know how this was done and who helped.

  4. in the long run yes. the true question is when? I hate to say it but it happens. I started as a volunteer and enjoyed it. But the nature of it is to destory itself from the inside out. Becoming a giant political atmosphere with clicks and groups of people that single out and yes bully others at times. And in the end those groups fall apart and go away and few are actually left. The foundation of the volunteer agency is pure, help your neighbor in a time of need, if you are able to respond.

True statement. I have witnessed first hand how clicks single out people and bully them. Sad part is many of those in these clicks are elected by the public in good faith to make sure the agency is doing the right thing but instead using their authority to throw people out for no good reason.

  5. I am glad this ended with no loss of life both the firefighters and law enforcement. The article say the former members was in a dispute with the fire company. My guess is this goes way beyond that. And I am not excusing what he did and he should do time I also think he needs help. There is a mental illness crisis in this country that is exploding to levels we have never seen before and it is being ignored.
