  1. My dept is $20 per year, collect at 65, and max out at $800. In my area, they are all about the same. The real question is what does your dept do for those OVER 65 who still make their points?

Still have to be allowed to accrue points. There have been several court cases where those who reached 65 were told they could not accrue points anymore which is not the case

  2. So let me see if I get your position, everyone in the fire department is equal and rightfully called firefighter regardless of their training and capabilities? Does this include the fire police and ladies auxiliary?

If you want to discuss fitness and risk of heart attacks, the issue isn't an age restriction but rather a fitness requirement. Something that I'm sure 95% of all volunteer FD's would oppose, even those who give their members free or discounted memberships at the local fitness club or have big gyms right in the firehouse.

This is only an issue in this part of the country. I was out west in September and my friends in FD's out there laugh when I describe the set-up we have here. They have one training standard for career and volunteer, run mostly combination departments at the county level, and don't bicker like we do here. Why don't they bicker? Because they're all trained to the same standard - interior, I might add - so they don't have the rift between career and volunteer that we have over training and qualifications. Every firefighter is trained the same so one day you might be packed up and inside and the next day you might be laddering the building, stretching hose, etc. They simply don't have the nonsense that we do.

Calling everyone who works in the hospital a healthcare worker is like calling everyone who works at an airport a pilot. Simply not true. You wouldn't want someone with first aid training doing your surgery would you?

And why do people hang up their SCBA but stay in the fire department? Is it perhaps to continue building points toward a pension?

Why? Because there are many such as myself who for health reasons can not wear a mask but can perform most of the other duties that need to be done. I speak for myself when I say the pension program is not my motive for staying. You hands down win the training argument and bring up some very good points. It is what it is. There is clearly a different standard unlike other states but as far as fitness this is a problem both in career and volunteer departments more so in volunteer departments I taught at the training center for many years and have seen guys on both sides of the fence with weight issues. Lets work to fix that.

  3. One standard for all firefighters. Period.

So yes, referring to new and existing

I agree with incoming members but not those allready in who have put thier time in, perhaps can no longer wear a mask but can drive and run a pump or aerial ladder and do other stuff on the fireground that does not require wearing the mask. What happens to career firefighters who have some time on and fall into the same category?

  5. Is teenagers riding on the top of the body part of a "wet down"?

I'm not a fan of all work and no play either.....but I never understood the point of a wet down. It's a truck/engine. A tool. I've been working more than once for the assignment of a new apparatus......the shops calls, we dump the tools/hose on the floor, drop the old rig off at the shops, get the new one, load it up and a few hours later we're back in service. Next run comin'......

I believe it mimicks the christening of a new battleship...a long standing tradition. I will admit the rigs coming in with the sirens is a bit much.

  6. Well, I relistened and all I hear is the recorder say "I can record" and the Trooper appears to say "You can" or possibly "Yes, you can." The Trooper doesn't appear to say anything directing him not to record, nor does he even engage him in any conversation, so.... There is no indication the Trooper said or took any action precluding recording. The Trooper is even walking away from the guy recording as he passes him.

I'm not sure why some people go out of their way to assume the cops are wrong, when there is no evidence to substantiate that, and even in this case evidence to the contrary.

    Unreal.

Because there is an anti-cop sentiment that is growing thanks to the left wing media...
