He saved his daughter and tried to save the piece of garbage who was molesting her and could of possibly killed her. His actions were justified and hopefully won't see any furthur legal implications. And I agree if this was NY...

Doesn't surprise me at all. Many kids today are disrespectful thanks to lack of discipline at home. I can't imagine what my parents would of done to me if I ever did that to someone, especially an elderly woman. I can tell you my son would of been lit up like a Xmas tree if he ever engaged in that kind of behavior.

Brother...not to sound like a killjoy because your idea is noble but today many volunteer departments are having a tough enough time handling calls within let alone being called more to man a special ops unit which besides Westchester County I believe there are some units around the county. Another issue would be training. You would need to be trained to certain levels ( hazmat, high/low angle rescue, trench and building collapse...etc) which requires alot of hours both initial and on-going. Again a noble idea which in better times may work but in today's climate it's getting tougher to handle the routine stuff.

In response to the NFPA's stats which Jflynn highlighted you can't argue with facts. We (volunteers) are being injured or dying in large numbers not only in accidents but also heart attacks ( another thread). And I say this not only from NFPA stats but also as a former EVOC instructor where I spent hours reading cases involving accidents. Now an argument can be made that our numbers are higher and in many cases many volunteers respond in POV's but at the end of the day it is a problem and more emphasis needs to be put into safe driving.

Doesn't surprise me...unfortunately law enforcement has been painted as the bad guy thanks to the media.

Great topic. There is a class that addresses this and it is the Leadership and Administration class at the National Fire Academy in Maryland. It is a 40 hour program under the Volunteer Incentive Program. It covered budgets, administration, and basically most things you need to know to be an administrator. Not a replacement for a management or similiar degree but you get a basic understanding of managing a fire deprtment. The downside is not everyone can get down there to take the class and I am not sure if this type of training is offered in NY. Alot of what I learned as a chief and now a commissioner is simply reaching out and asking those who have been there.
"I know many departments have Commisioners that handle these things, but shouldn't the Chief have the same knowledge?"
Considering that a fire commissioner can be a lay person with no fire service background a chief could have more knowledge therefore it is imperative that the chief have some training in administrative issues.
