  1. Thanks George,

One of the most disturbing things about this whole incident is that the perpetrator involved was recently arrested twice in NYC for relatively minor drug offenses, and both times NYPD officers reached out to North Carolina authorities about an outstanding warrant that was issued against him for shooting another individual, and both times North Carolina authorities refused to extradite him from New York to face the serious charges he had pending in North Carolina. Had he been extradited like he should have been, this incident may have never happened.

I guess NC figured he's NY's problem now why bring him back here! It's such a disgrace our Justice System. We need prisons like Papillon. You plead guilty or are found Guilty, no appeals, off you go. If you can escape, well then society will welcome you back!

  2. Yesterday's tragedy was an ambush while the officer was on a traffic stop. There was a shooter on campus that had not been caught at the time of the shooting so it is and Active Shooter case in my opinion. Lock down of the campus was a smart thing to do.

As for 2 man police cars, I don't see that happening in very many places when PD's are talking about budget cuts and laying PO's off.

As members of the Scranton Fire Department and their supporters rally against the closing of firehouses, firefighters are refusing to work overtime shifts, leading to fewer firehouses being open, according to city and fire officials.

City officials say firefighters' refusal to work overtime shifts en masse has resulted in just three stations and four companies open on some days because of a vehicle minimum staffing level. At least six fire stations are open and seven vehicles are in service the majority of the time, city officials say.

  4. Obviously there is a difference if the RMP needs to be moved, the Officer is tied up doing something, the FD guy asks for permission and the cop grants it, and the Fd guy just getting in and moving it without permission. I'm guessing the latter of the two occurred, which I could see your thought process of almost arresting the guy stemming from.

It wasn't my call, but you got the point!

  5. Seriously dude, you're going to tell me that you never moved another emergency vehicle or had one moved for you? And if someone was trying to do the right thing and help you out by moving a police car you'd collar them? Nice.

And I can't believe you're actually suggesting that the driver of the ambulance positioned the vehicle to "inconvenience" others on the road. See my other comment about urban parking problems but more to the point is the EMT did what he/she had to do and was completely justified. Should they really have gone hunting for a parking space?

Remember this little pearl from COP101?

Does it occur to you that if the woman had just heeded the officer's admonition about not moving the ambulance and went to work, none of this would have happened? Instead she interfered with them on the scene and had the temerity to go to the PD to make a complaint. Clearly she didn't get the point so to reinforce that point now she'll find out how the judicial system works. It's not the EMT's fault that this woman talked herself right into handcuffs.

If any of you think that I agree with this woman, you are totally wrong! The point I was trying to make is that 1, maybe the ambulance crew could have positoned the ambulance in a better spot. I don't think they parked it to inconvience the public, but it did. 2, maybe this PO didn't know that he could move the amb or he could have asked the crew if he could move it. I wasn't there so that could have been suggested when this woman just decided to move it on her own. As for moving my veh, as I posted before, if it was someone on my job or another PD Agency, I would not have a problem with it. It has happened where a VFD member moved a PD Veh and the VFD member came very close to being arrested.

  6. I mean when you hit the brake when the ambulance is parked and running, it shuts off the ambulance and requires a hidden button or something similar to restart.

People are crazy abour jobs now. They worry if they are late they will get fired, and in this economy, they are easily replaced.

A Patrol Car with weapons is a totally diffent story.

It all comes down to being considerate and providing excellent customer service. The Officer could have secured the vehicle when he already had to warn someone about it.

It isn't the PD's responsobility to secure the ambulance. Maybe if they pulled up at the same time he/she could suggest putting the ambulance in a different spot, but if the PO is already tending to the patient, the amb crew should use some common sense!

  7. What if they were working on a patient in a Type I ambulance?

Why isn't this a NYS*DOH requirment to have ignition interlock devices and to secure your vehicle?

Here's some more info on systems available:

    http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/facts-research/systems-technology/product-guides/vehicle-disabling.htm

And could the Police Officer just have moved the ambulance out of the way? I don't know what type of call it was or what type of situation, but if the Officer took 1 minute to move the ambulance, or secured it after the initial event, couldn't this have been avoided?

What makes you think that the PD has the right to move the ambulance. I can just see if for some reason the PO hit something. Do you mean DWI Interlock devices? That would seem pretty idiotic if you ask me.

Maybe if the driver of the ambulance positioned it as to not inconvience others on the road this wouldn't be an issue!

I can tell you this, anyone other than myself or another LEO from either my job or another job moved my patrol car they would be in handcuffs as well!

  8. To all my Public Service Brothers and Sisters, but mainly LEO's. Today is Dec 1, what starts what we call SUS or Sitck Up Season. Please Be aware of your surroundings no matter what time of day. In these hard Economic times, people are resorting to comminting many types of crimes to provide for themselves or their families. If you see or hear something that doesn't seem right, it probably isn't. If you are home during the day, watch for packages being delievered to your neighbor's and watch for people removing same from your neighbors houses. Many people will be attending CHRISTMAS PARTIES at all times of the day and night which could result in Robberies and DWI's, always keep your heads on a swivel. It's hard enough for us in LE to go to work during the HOLIDAY SEASON, but it's alot more important that we make IT HOME TO OUR FAMILIES TO ENJOY THE HOLIDAY SEASON! BE SAFE!!!

  9. I have always been all for a fleet of marked vehicles being keyed alike. I have been on calls where keys were locked in a running Police car and another car has to go back to HQ to get the lock out tool to open the car. This now takes 2 Patrol units OOS. If they were all keyed alike, you can keep a spare on your key ring as long as it's in your pocket and not attached to you bag in the now locked Veh!

If the amb was locked and this woman broke into it, a Crim Mischief charge prob would have been added due to the damage she would have had to do to open the door.

  10. We have atleast 3 people retiring (and they are reducing our total size by these members also) and thats preventing an additional 3 members being laid off.

We also have members who are disabled and have been waiting for years for NYS to retire them. These are members who have major life long disabilities and can never work again and the state is taking years to review the paperwork. If the state would agree with all of the doctors (including their own) we could reduce the number of lay offs.

I understand what you are saying. You would think that when people retire they would back fill them with new hires. We are having the same problem on my job. A couple of guys retired and some are out on comp and they only hired 1 when we really needed at least 4. Good luck and be safe!!

  11. True but you cant force anyone to retire. Maybe they got it so good they want to stay for awhile?

I agree with you, but when is enough, enough? I am all about everyone getting theirs, but there also comes a point when a person is actually losing money by sticking around. I am pretty sure everyone has the number in their heads around the 17 year mark on what they need to get out in 20, if that is what your retirement is. Unless you are in a position to get a promotion, I think if you hit your mark then retire. I also do understand that some unforseen things do come up negating this option.

  12. Journal News

NEW CITY — Rockland County's proposed $7.25 million law enforcement cuts will increase crime and severely hamstring the county's abilities to investigate and prosecute people charged with crimes, police and prosecutors said Thursday.

They plan to lobby the county Legislature to restore the money and not eliminate the Sheriff's Office Police Division. The proposal calls for firing 30 of the division's 69 officers and transferring 30 others to the legally required inmate transport unit.

The proposed cuts mean no forensic investigations at crime scenes, no arson investigations, no bomb squad, a diminished task force to target drug dealers, no horse, marine and anti-terrorism units, and no crime analysts and investigation.
