Apparently, the Town of Colonie is around 56 square miles.
From what I remember of the area, it's quite populated.
I am sure some consolidation could help. But that thought process seems to scare the crap out of many people. However, when done properly, consolidation could be a win-win for all involved.
Potentially downsize in the way of firehouses and apparatus (saving a tremendous amount of money). This could also potentially increase the manpower out of each station.
I am not sure of the combined call volume in the town as there are so many independent companies. Perhaps some career staffing could be justified?

This article is apparently from 2011. Has anything changed since then (sure I know the answer)....

In the Civil Service world, patience is key my friend.
Beleive me, you want to check your mail box everyday. But just go about your normal business and be patient.
As Mr. Benz stated (he would know), be prepared for each step or don't even bother. You passed the written, terrific. Now get yourself as prepared as possible for the CPAT. But again, be patient.
For the record, i am not a career fireman lol. But I've been through the process. If you are patient and prepared, you will be fine. Best of luck to you.

Another red light, green light 1, 2, 3 discussion....
If you use a blue light, don't drive like an a$$hole, period. If people want to pull over as a curtesy, terrific. If not, do not tailgate, do not flash your high beams, just deal with it. Regardless, you are to still obey all traffic laws. You are better off not using a light.
As for this new change in the law, I think it's great. Anything that's meant to further protect emergency services is ok in my book.

Just out of curiosity; are any of the laid off members looking to get hired elsewhere? Or are they "bound" by their contract? Again, just being curious.
I feel horrible for these men and their families.
Also, is there any Go Fund Me or similar fund raising site for these members and their families?
Forgive me if these questions have been answered already.

Updated at 12:41 PMNEW WINDSOR – The Orange County and West Point hazmat teams responded Wednesday morning to a report of a chlorine leak at the town’s water filtration plant on Riley Road.
The New Windsor Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Mobile Life Support Services also responded, along with town police and Vails Gate firefighters.
The leak was discovered at 6:10 a.m.
Police said the employee who noticed the leak was already outside when the first responders arrived. The road was closed and residents nearby were notified.
Hazmat workers found a small leak in a crossover pipe and fixed it.
New Windsor ambulance crew members treated the plant worker as a precaution.
