Before any public safety position is ever eliminated, all non-vital positions such as Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Commissioners, mayoral aides, secretaries, etc, should be eliminated.

While I think that its normal to feel uncomfortable as a new EMT, refreshing on the way to a call is really not the way to go. You owe it to your patients to be a competent provider before you respond as the EMT on a call. If your VAC is pushing for you to ride solo before you think your ready that is something you need to address. As far as medical histories go SAMPLE should be about the same for all of your patients. Your OPQRST questions really don't change either. The basis behind that is to get an idea of what is going on with the present illness, and one of the best ways to do that is with open ended questions if you listen to your patient they will tell you most of the pertinent details you need to know. Just remember your ABC's and use some common sense when your getting a history and you will be fine.

I had a few gripes here -- which were PM'd and e-mailed to a few folks (none of which replied to me...)
First, as the original poster, I was never notified the post was removed, but it simply "disappeared". No notification to the originator, at least a professional curtsey.
Secondly, I felt the thread (minus the "me vs you" comments) was very educational for the members of this community. While it is a black eye for our industry, what better opportunity to learn from.
Third, we see tons of threads in this community that are "locked" and "cooled down" -- yet, for some reason, this one was straight out removed.
Fourth, it's been quite a few days since the thread was removed and this is the first public acknowledgement that it was done -- nothing was done at the time, just simply vanished in thin air.
It's no doubt the EMTBravo staff have a huge job on their hands -- but we're not kids here, treat us like adults and we'll treat you back.

I believe this is the wrong approach; it throws the good out with the bad.
This is a first responder forum, not a knitting circle; we're all type A personalities, we can handle a little conflict and rough exchanges - here or in the firehouse/precinct/whatever.
If the behaviour of certain posters crosses the line, first warn, then delete the posts and ban the posters - long enough to cool off, or permanently if merited. That's the way I would handle it.
This isn't criticism; I don't spent the time & effort Seth & the moderators do in running things around here. Just my opinion.

Many departments make arrangements to move families into the fire house during the stand by. If your family is at the firehouse, you know they are safe. That is most important. The house can be repaired or even replaced if need be. The families physical well being is more important. If you know they are safe, you can concentrate on the job at hand.
  12. FFD941 liked a post in a topic by FFPCogs in Tradition vs. Progress
'200 years of tradition unimpeded by progress". Many of us are familiar with this phrase and most I'm sure can apply it to at least one aspect of their FD. Without doubt tradition is a powerful force within the American Fire Service. It can act as a catalyst for progress or in some cases, as an impediment to it. To me there are some traditions, some inviolate cornerstones, born at the inception of organized fire protection in this country, that are in fact the very foundation on which our service rests. Things like putting those we serve above ourselves, courage, honor, dedication and the desire to do our duty in spite of the obstacles. The noblilty of what we do and all that makes it possible is rare indeed in the world today and that is a tradition that thankfully has withstood the passage of time and changes to society. But when tradition impedes progress, when the steadfast refusal to "get with the times" causes a FD to stagnate, it is not only a disservice to those we serve but dangerous. For many "we've always done it that way" suffices because it is comfortable...that is until tradgedy strikes. Change...progress...is always difficult because it takes people out of the known, out of their comfort zone, and beyond that the call for change, for "progress", usually implies that something is wrong...and who among us likes to be told they are wrong.
As with most things in life the trick is to find a balance between what works and what needs to change. Technology will always evolve and that progression will ultimately create changes in tools, tactics and our knowledge of the enemy. For some the ability to get on board with these "new" tangibles is not always easy, or practical, but it is almost universally inevitable. And this is how is should be. But with these new tangibles of tools, tactics and training comes a responsibility to not let them overtake or undermine the traditions that have made us who and what we are. Progress should never eclipse the intangilbles of courage, honor and dedication that make the American fireman what he is at his core. For each of us and our FDs progress should strive to find the balance that best suits our needs and more importantly those of our community. Neither progress or tradition should be allowed to impede the ability of us to effectively do our duty, for it is both when in balance that allows us to do it well.

To all questioning F.A.S.T team. between Cheslea,Beacon, and Castle Point we had approx. 40 firefighters on scene. Approx 25 interior. We were using 5-8 members at a time either interior or on roof. That left about 15 members outside for relief and/or F.A.S.T.. there was also 2 engines sitting idle for back up if needed. I felt with the manpower at the scene we did not need a 2nd alarm or formal team on scene. All of my interiors are at least survival trained and most have F.A.S.T. . This was just a fire on second floor and under control in about 20-30 mins. the guys made a quick stop of the fire and kept the fire damage to the front 2 rooms and part of the roof. Any further questions feels free to p.m. me. Bob Van Tassel Chief Chelsea

As gamewell45 said, there's strength in numbers. Broke or not if you need the help the union can give you believe me you'll find yourself driving to their HQ. As far as the information and money goes? Get involved, just as any other topic in America, it's best to be informed. The more you know the better off you are at making that decision. Have your shop steward make the drive to HQ and get materials to disseminate to the membership or talk with other unions in the area.
Just remember it's a new hurdle, there will be bumps in the road.

The law also states the driver of any emergency vehicle will drive "WITH DUE REGARD". Any lawyer will argue that an emergency vehicle going past a red light or other negative traffic control device and involved in an accident even if not the operators fault was not operated with due regard since we should all expect the other drivers to be idiots and not paying any attention.
All that really matters in this accident is that every one walked away.

Just would like to be the first to commend DC-911 in monitoring the channels being utilized this evening at LaGrange's Structure Fire on Emans Road. I was extremely impressed tonight, while monitoring the frequencies myself, to hear Dutchess 911 contacting on scene Command attempting to confirm that an evacuation request from an interior crew was heard on the Fire Ground Channel. The evacuation tones were then transmitted along with the Urgent Message to evacuate and a P.A.R. was completed.
All too often we read NIOSH reports that find that an attempt was made by a FF to request an evacuation and it was not heard by command or a MAYDAY was not heard or lost in the radio shuffle. It is because of heads up dispatchers like the on duty dispatch center today that we can minimize these unnecessary deaths.
I would like to add that by no means is this a bash on any part of the operations this evening. It is because we work as a team that incidents safely are mitigated.
    Again Great Job!
