Best of luck to our brothers and sisters in YO. Hopefully this is a gimmick similar to Bloombergs...

FD and EMS. EMS to evaluate the clear/transport the patient. FD for the extra hands. PD too if they are having a slow day and they feel like it...
These can be generally simple with an extreme potential to go south quicker than anyone would like.

The Troopers were the first to arrive. Yes, the police often respond to emergencies in the rural parts of the state. This being a Friday afternoon, just before Christmas in a sparsely populated town with a well hidden from road/view structure the fire had a lot of headway before it was discovered. The person who discovered the fire actually drove to the volunteer firehouse to report it, found no one there and used the emergency phone to notify 911. The fire department was finally called, and almost immediately called 3 more departments under mutual aid for assistance. There is not a career fire department within sight of southern Columbia County. Troopers arrived initially and updated 911. The fire department did eventually show up with an engine, a tanker and a rescue each with a driver. With the limited manpower and some more enroute from neighboring departments with extended ETA's, the IC asked the Troopers for assistance to try to keep the fire from extending to the other portion of the house. The Troopers, 3/4 who are volunteer firefighters with chief officer experience and training obliged with permission from their supervisor. When enough fire personnel arrived, the Troopers were relieved and re-assumed their law enforcement roles.
Maybe not the best situation, but it happened, happened safely and they did do some good. Let's face it, this fire was the biggest thing going on in Columbia County at the time and the 2 speeders that got away on the Taconic during the time the Troopers were manning the hoseline will be caught next time.
As someone who takes a lot of fire pics in the Greene & Columbia areas I see the cooperation between law, fire and rescue squads all the time. You look up here at fire scenes and say "What the ....??" and I look at operations in the "Metro" areas and just scratch my head.
And Truck12345 seriously? Bill the FD for the Troopers time?? Maybe we should send bills to the NYSP every time we have to sit at a wire down on a STATE road and wait for NiMo or CH?? Maybe the next time we need the Troopers to help close a road so we can lay supply line across the street, maybe they won't be there.
I'm proud and happy that these Troopers were able to help and were not so disgruntled and screwed up that they just looked crosseyed at the Chief and said "Sorry dude. Not my job."

I couldn't disagree more. The only reason to call the FD is if you don't have the manpower, which is a system issue on your end, not a guideline or protocol issue like you seen to want to make it by forcing the inclusion of FD.
I run on a crew of 4 EMT-B's,I's and P's. Between the four of us, we can stabilize, lift and move almost any patient we come across. The only reason why we would consider calling the FD is if we need more hands or more tools, other than that, calling the FD will only bring more bodies to the scene, bodies I might add can cause further embarrassment and stress to an already distressed patient. People, especially if they are elderly or in a residential treatment facility, see ambulances on a daily basis, it is quite the commotion when our huge red truck comes screaming down the road to the facility. That commotion is stressful to the residents and the patients. Sometimes a lighter touch is what is required in these calls...
If I need the FD, they are a radio call away...

And that is why all of the 60-Control dispatchers are EMD, so they don't send a medic on to pick up Mrs. Jones after she fell out of her wheelchair again this week.

It's unfortunate that you (we) have to choose between one or the other. Honestly speaking though, I would probably say I disagree with you slightly. All things being equal, I more loathe the constant and baseless attacks on public sector workers than the idea that less than qualified applicants will be hired. I mean, let's face it, we all already work with guys/gals that never should have been hired, but they had a good day and did well on a rather simple test. The mere fact that the courts are making that an easier pathway, to me, it less of a threat then we face from anti-union, anti-labor forces who are attacking our pay, benefits, pension, etc.

Chief Flynn I think to have an article point out that a firefighter is a Volunteer or Career is senseless, both sides have driving issues just as bad as the other. Just because you want people who have a career department to feel safe, does not mean it does not happen there. I have agreed with you on many issues here, but this one I have to say I disagree.
If you’re trying to say that career firefighters drive safer then volley firefighters...well your wrong if that is the statement. I have seen "career" firefighters blow red lights and stop signs on regular basis in the City, Yonkers, New Roc, and Mount Vern. So maybe if I write an editorial I on this should I use the term Career. So the people in my town feel safer because they are not volunteers I am writing about. While I am at should I mention if it is a female firefighter or male firefighter because there are people who think females are bad drivers, or should I state the firefighter is short or tall because there are people who think because if he or she is short they cant do the job, or should I state if a firefighter is black or white because there are racist people out there.

Ok, so I'm not sure why the difference between the two stats you have. Was it just because the the time period studied or were there different criteria in the search? The "Selected Special Analysis" is throwing me off. But we'll go with what we got. From 92-02 Career ff's made up 9.9% of the deaths and from '00 to '10 they're up to 18.8%. Since the two over lap this is terrible statistics, but when I average it out we get 14.35%. As of 2010 All career and mostly career FD's only represented 14% of the firefighters nation wide. Arguably even in mostly volunteer FD's the career guys still probably do the lion share of the apparatus driving. That more than doubles the number to 32% of all firefighters.
All of this however could mean nothing because take yonkers for example. Your dept has how many apparatus on the road available to respond every day? A quick google search came up with 20 including the battalions. If you take your typlical westchester volleys responding from home to fill 18 rigs and two chiefs (lets assume only two members on each rig because its a beautiful tuesday afternoon) you're going to wind up with 56 separate vehicles being driven. You'd have to do 3x as many runs in yonkers to cover the number of trips taken by the vollys. Then there's the number of miles driven. What's the average distance for urban paid depts vs suburban and rural volunteer depts? Chief, you're over simplifying some very complicated statistics just to make a point. Without the proper data how can people not take this as a biased attack? It makes it seem personal no matter how much you insist it is not.

Exactly what I was thinking. While Mayor Booker may be tooting his horn a little much two things are undeniable. 1) Bloomerg would have never even considerd it, he would have told his escorts to call the fire department and leave it at that. 2) Mayor Booker has a long history of trying to do good whenever possible on his own time for the city of Newark.

Its not all that difficult to make some small changes that will have big impacts on you're health and life in general. Smoking aside, stay away from sugary drinks....for many cutting out soda alone will equate to pounds lost, control you're portion sizes, try and eat a balanced diet w/ fiber, whole grains (i.e. stay away from wonder bread), fruits, veggies and lean protein sources (fish is great, chicken w/o the skin is good too). Space you're meals throughout the day w/ a healthy low-fat snap in between and start reading labels. Also, doing light physical activity like walking is great. You don't need to run 10 miles a day to be fit. Walk a local school track or a favorite trail or road.
I think the biggest thing is that you need to start small and gradually progress. I find as humans many of us tend to want to jump right in and go all or nothing and then we end up giving up a week later. Start w/ adjusting you're diet then maybe add in some light walking and go from there. I'm sure you will be pleased w/ the results. best of luck.

Hands down, I am not a fan of this upgrade as it stands currently. As mentioned above, everything is significantly slower and harder to use. It doesn't surprise me in the least that posting has decreased to the lowest levels I have seen since I first joined.
I do not know the reason for the upgrade but let me say this, I think it was unnecessary and so far has detracted significantly the quality of this site in my opinion.
It has become a real pain to post and view this site, to the point where I have stopped doing it at all except during my slowest hours.
Bring back the old pre-upgrade site.

While obviously very humorous, he violated a major rule in the fire house in my opinion. Much like when you are at the pool, no running, if you slip and fall the risk of hurting yourself is too high. There is no call in the world that is worth tripping, falling and striking your head on the side of the rig or the ground.
According to NFPA, from 2008 to 2010, 25% of all firefighter injuries were from "Fall, jump, slip, trip". Go slow and hopefully you can catch yourself before you fall so you don't get hurt.
8,210 falls with inuries were reported by the NFPA between 2005 and 2009, thats over 2,000 injuries from falls a year. Again, go slow, maintain your balance and avoid being a statisitic, maybe then you can fight the fire.

While that is true, I have the Motorola Droid 2 and my battery charges from 30% to 100% in less than three hours and a replacement battery is under 5 dollars on Amazon.com.
While I am a huge fan of the Android operating system, I am just waiting for the day I get an iPhone, who actually needs their phone to make phone calls.

Kinda like asking if you have an issue with female firefighters. The answer is unequivocally not at all. Some of the best firefighters I know are women as have the ones who went on to be chief been some of the best chiefs I have known.

Considering O2, glucose, charcoal and aspirin, metered dose inhalers, nitro, epi are all considered medication in the BLS protocols, unless you are a CFR/EMT I would ditch any of those from a BLS jump bag if it is not used by members certified to use them (not that BLS is carrying nitro, epi or mdi's.) Additionally, unless you are qualified to splint a limb or immobilize a patient using BLS equipment (backboard, collar, straps, splints, traction splint etc) I would refrain from attempting to splint any injury seeing as you can do more harm than good if it is done wrong.
I.E. unless you run as a state licensed BLS/CFR service, ditch anything that is considered a medicine or that you need special training to apply.
I wouldn't want some random firefighter who just happened to grab the jump kit trying to treat a patient, do it right or don't do it at all.
Let me finish this little statement with the belief that CPR/AED & CFR should be part of all intro firefighting courses. (and if we are adding time to FFI we might as well add FFII, Survival, AVET, FAST)
Just becasue you are a firefighter does not mean you will not be called on to treat patients. When was your last fire verse your last time seeing a patient on-scene?
