I know but lets not forget the type of Profession we're talking about. Many times quick rational decisions have to be made to protect or save one's life or property and why not have those who are most competent regardless of their residency, After all we're not talking about hiring people to work at a new Department Store opening up in our Community. We're in a very hazardous Job where seconds count. I've seen guys who lived and those who still live in the municipality they work in and can't tell you the street name behind the Station they've been workin in for the past 20 yrs so does it really matter in the long run?

What I don't understand is most the surrounding Municipalities will only hire off a residency list but as soon as a person is off Probation or even while still on in some cases, they are allowed to move elsewhere. Maybe it's time for NY Depts. to adopt the same policies as many Connecticut Depts. and have one list. Who gives a rats a** where somebody lives, i want the best person for the job! Would you rather have an individual who was number one on an "out of town" list backing you up or some guy that got a final grade of a 70% and was 100 on the "in town" list? Like I said not too many individuals even reside anymore in the Towns, Villages or Cities where they work. It's not like years ago and some places have a very scarce legitamate picking pool to even choose from. There's many people who just don't want the Job, no matter how much you beg them to apply form it.

I hate to say it but let's be real fellows we are many times our own worst enemy. All you ever hear during these times and when negotiating a contract with these City officials is the number of guys who are out on 207a. It's not so much the members fault I guess because it was the Conference of Mayors who agreed on this disability package and has made it so easy to obtain, so why not try and get out for a hangnail. Maybe the City should start hiring Private Investigators to follow up on these cases like other States do and if 207a members are found of cheating the system incarcerate the bums and there you'll have the $$$$$ to prevent such layoffs. Maybe it's also time for all members of all the Locals to bring back the ole "peer pressure" and embarass some of the phonies out there from even filing. If your legitamately hurt then fine you deserve it but if your caught scamming you deserve what you get. I thought our Job was a "Brotherhood". BTW how many guys does NRFD have out on 207a?

Will YFD offer rides to the testing site and reminder and wake up calls for the test? After all it's only fair for those less fortunate.

I wonder if they provide wake up calls and rides to the testing center like they do up here? I think NOT!!!! I love how they say it's your responsibility to pick up the "prep" manual it won't b mailed to you. Good for them, it's nice to see there are still some Depts. out there that won't lower their Standards! You want the Job that much then go get it!

Seth does the BC have an Aide and if so what is his function? Many problems the BC encounters can be mitigated or completely resolved if he has a reliable and responsible Aide. Again the big word is "if". Many good aides can actually make their BC look good. Then there are those who are nothing but personal chauffers.

Unfortunately Capt they only seem to take forever when they're screwin around with them for whatever reason! There should b no reason why it takes so long the tests are graded with a computer. I have a friend who took an Atlanta PD test and all applicants had their grades before they left the classroom!

Maybe some Depts. are applying the Vulcan Decree to them. That could be cause for the delay.

Not necessarily true. Many rigs in Career Depts. don't have guys with yrs experience. Some depts. may even have a whole truck co. with everyone on it having 5yrs and less. This has happened and I believe still happens in FDNY. Then you've got the rig with some guys who have 20yrs but still no experience and are incapable of doing the basics correctly. Speaking of Basics, I strongly feel we get too wrapped up in the FAST team concept and policies instead of worrying about our members being competent in the Basic Firefighting Skills. Get a proper sized and supplied handline in the right location, with adequate and properly timed ventilation and good chances we won't even need a Fast Team. I guarantee if you look at many of the NIOSH reports you'll see many LODs were caused by members not following proper procedures, incompetence and complacency.Don't get me wrong I think the FAST team concept is great but there's a time and place for it. Do we really need a Fast team standing by for a mattress Job or contents in a bedroom, not to mention many FDs including Career are shorthanded and I may need those 2-3 guys standing outside, inside performing critical tasks that need to get done immediately and aren't. Don't get these tasks completed and that mattress job in the hallway has now entered the dumbwaiter shaft and is about to take the cockloft of the 5 story H shaped occupied MD. I'd rather utilize everyone at the scene to get that fire u/c instead of worrying about how many guys do I have outside in case the "What if" happens, especially if I'm workin with a skeleton crew. JMO. PS Now lower a Depts Standards and you really have a problem on your hand!

If true I wonder if they'd give their own test or be part of the Towns/Villages testing. It does seem to be the wave of the future. Good for the Somers Officials for being proactive and lookin out for their taxpayers best interest.

It's got alot to do with it bro., you should know that. You can have all the fancy equipment, training and bresnan distributors you want on a rig but if the manpower isn't there to deploy it and use it that ISO rating means nothing. Does the ISO take into account how many personnel show up to a Job at 3am without relying on m/a? The citizens of the Town of Mamaroneck might really enjoy their new reduction in Insurance premiums but lets see how they feel when their house or business burns to the ground cause a skeleton crew showed up on the 1st due apparatus within the 1st three minutes. This is by no means a diss to the TMFD, they got alot of great guys and do the best they can with what they got, but I think just too much emphasis is placed on ISO ratings. How many of the ISO employees have ever even fought a Job. I could care less if my Dept. has more then its full complement of halligans and nozzles or a great water supply within its district, if there's a delay in utilizing these resources you can take that ISO rating and stick it!

Maybe it's time for the FDMV and MVPD to have one list. Let's face it the picking pool of decent candidates is slim to none if your just goin to take residents. Give me someone who wants the Job regardless of where they live.

Gotta agree with you on the "Job Security" issue. Nothing pisses me off more then the Unions backing the skells on the Job that $uck up over and over and you can't fire them cause they have rights.
