  1. On a side note Nassau County Police run EMS services? How does that work?
  2. Too bad you weren't in Orlando this past Saturday. It was our annual department Chili Cook-Off and there were a good amount of rigs there, including the Heavy Rescue, Haz-Mat, and the rest of station 1.
  3. It could be spy-ware too. Download Ad-Aware its free for personal use. It finds spyware and trojans and removes them.
  4. I would imagine not if anything it would be the airline. Could be totally wrong? Signed #117675 Just looked it up as long as it is a HO-2 or HO-3 policy they are covered: According to Insure.com
  5. I did a quick search to make sure I am not asking something that has been and nothing turned up. Can or will there ever be a time that you can "call" 911 for help through a text message? As a sat and watched the new this morning (in FL) they reported on a home invasion where 5 college students were locked in a bathroom while the robbers went through the house. They took their cell phones but one managed to keep theirs. They were threatened with guns so they stayed quiet. They did not not call police until an hour after the robbers left and they were sure they were gone since they were scared and threatened by death. What if they could have text 911 so that they would not be heard talking? I know they have systems set up for the hearing impaired and or blind but what happens if you "text" 911? (ps I meant POSSIBLE not possbile? haha )
  6. Great info thanks for the insight. Just as was said you cant learn these things in the academy.
  7. I completely agree that you should use your training to monitor your surrounding conditions, but besides a TIC what can you use to monitor heat? If you take away your sense of feel then you have nothing. Why would it be too late when your ears start to get some heat? I would think it would be too late when your ears start to burn and you do have a hood on. Your hood is most likely made of the same material as your turnouts so burnt ears would be the least of your problems.
  8. I wear it but I can see the argument of why some people don't. With all the new materials (of turnout gear) and protective equipment you can sometimes get too deep for your own good. I guess the logic is when you ears start burning its time to think about a way out.
  9. You don't have to worry about backing in.
  10. I think the dark wheels have something to do with it being a hybrid? I have always wondered that since hybrids came out. The wheels always seem to have less openings for heat dissipation and usually darker then normal wheels on the same regular models. It may have to do with the way that the brakes recharge the batteries and it retaining more heat? Anyone know if this is true just a guess.
  11. Something on 3m reflective material would be cool too
  12. Agreed but its the training that the firefighter receives to know when it is time to get out. As a trained firefighter you know the signs and symptoms of when it is about to hit the fan. I'm pretty sure that since police officers have ballistic vests they don't put them selves in any more danger then if they were not wearing them. Bunker gear is just that gear until you are trained on how to use it and its limitations.
  13. may be me, im using firefox
  14. its a broken link for me?
  15. How about chemicals? Or maybe he sprayed the aerosol air freshener
  16. http://www.careercast.com/jobs/content/Job...d_BestHappiness The same site ranks Firefighter as the 3rd most satisfying job.
  17. I agree the tails can get caught up, and I actually prefer to wear the waist strap myself. I also agree that it helps in your through the floor or down the stairs scenario's. But I have had instances when crawling where I got caught on something where if I didn't have them buckled it may have slid over. I am not agreeing or disagreeing either way to wear it, I was just laughing that out of everything people see the bad in every picture. Its all personal preference. And I really don't understand the gloves thing? An SCBA works no matter what way you wear it but gloves do you no good in your pocket. If you want to wear them backwards or on the wrong hand then I don't really care as long as you are wearing them and it works for you.
  18. Who cares? Its not hurting anyone. If anything its easier to get it caught on something when its buckled. Its a comfort thing at least they are wearing the pack is the way you should have looked at it.
  19. Do the demotions and lay-off's go by seniority? Will those guys be the first to get re-hired and promoted again? Its unfortunate sorry to the guys in Yonkers.
  20. Arrested for repairing a car in the street? anyone one know what that's about?
  21. I like the new folding steps on the bucket compared to the older ones where the steps hung down about 2 feet. Now its a lot less obstructed.
  22. I know Mt. Vernon would probably love if FDNY would do this but just as the term it self states it's MUTUAL aid. What is FDNY receiving in return? Will they charge them every time they come into the city?
  23. can they be refilled on scene though? Or do you have to carry 3 for every firefighter on the rig.
  24. Stephen Siller had to do it in his.
  25. Good luck to everyone. Try Half.com or amazon for your books. Most of the time you can get away with the version prior to save a little as well. Just interested what is everyone studying? ALS does the fire service management degree require the extensive science study as a fire science does? Im guessing its more business oriented? I am in my last year of my BS in Business Administration.
