  1. It sounds like the reason for the additional charge was prompted by the defendant due to a lack of respect shown towards a Police Officer. As funny as it may sound, we should think about this. Police Officers are sometimes abused for doing thier jobs. This could have happened to a Firefighter, EMT or medic as well. The defendant was arrested for a serious charge, DWI. If the Police Officer didn't do his job, this idiot of a defendant could have killed someone so the Police Officer deserves respect for saving lives by taking him off of the road. Oh, by the way, the Police Officer also saved the defendant's life. I guess this is the thanks he got.
  2. I thought that EMTBravo was about Police work, EMS work and Firefighting. Not accountants and mileage money. Is this really what its come to? How about reajusting focus on why we're here.
  3. "Unfortunately, I live about a mile from the firehouse so its a whopping $0.80 per call" Don't you think that its a GOOD thing that you live o close to your firehouse? That way, you are not burdening the taxpayers with any additional expense. People are losing perspective. The reason people volunteer is to GIVE to the community. Not to see how many benefits you can get.
  4. How about a little "truth in advertising". Maybe the correct name should be "Hudson Valley EMT Services"? They are already working with one strike against them.
  5. I would recommend taking the Paramedic course instead. If you'r interested in advancing your EMS career, might as well aim for the top! Best of luck!
  6. They should have named the show "Moment of stupidity".
  7. The scene safety looks great. On the Tappan Zee we have the NYS Thruway Bridge Patrol and they do a great job with our scene safety. Unfortunately, on I-87 they scene safety is not as good. Usually just a State Trooper...that's it uless its a Jaws call.
  8. Hmmmm..... Maybe if one of the crime victim's was a D.A. then this guy would be in jail instead of being on the street.
  9. I can't believe this has happened again! I was working EMS for the crane collapse on East 50th Street. I must say that the city's Police, Fire and EMS did a great job on that disaster scene. Things that day were very well coordinated with a great incident command system in place right away.
  10. Ya' just can't fix stupid!
  11. If the patient experiences D/B due to lying prone you could try left lateral recumbant.
  12. Garbage truck rollover, eh?......Now THAT'S a dirty job! Just ask Mike Rowe.
  13. Wow! Abbey Richmond! I haven't heard that name for years (my first EMS job back in 1979). Anyway, Tarrytown Ambulance ... which is all volunteer except for 4 paid daytime employees, has a revenue recovery program. We bill the insurance companies and list the mileage on the form. We also collect money from the NYS Thruway Authority when we do jobs on the NYS Thruway or the Tappn Zee Bridge. Paul
  14. Does anyone work in a 911 ambulance that carries rescue tools, (Haligan, Jonny bar, etc.) or any other type of hand tools that can be used in an unusual rescue situation? The reason I ask, is because I'm trying to get one of my 911 EMS jobs to consider getting some small rescue hand tools, to use in case FD or ESU is not on a scene. This would allow us to initiate forced entry into a car, room in a house, etc. or use in any unusual situation. Thanks guys..........
  15. Guys, Thanks for all of the valuable information. I have formulated some ideas and will present them to my boss here at work. I do realize that EMT's and Paramedics are not trained in heavy rescue situations like ESU and FD but having some hand tools could initiate some light rescue untill ESU or FD arrives as needed. Paul
  16. Guys, thanks for the input. I was thinking more along the lines of hearing cries for help behind a wooden bathroom door and using a tool to gain entry or simply breaking a hasp / padlock ... more of a simple rescue then a complicated rescue that is more F.D.'s expertise. If there was a person trapped in a car wreck, I would certainly think that FD or ESU would be better qualified to handle that situation.
  17. Ya' just can't fix stupid! I laughed out loud when they were discussing that the smoke can damage your lungs while in the room and breathing it all in. What idiots! Good thing they were wearing thier baseball hats......
  18. Ya' can't fix stupid!
  19. You'r not making me laugh.....WORK ON IT! Don't give up your day job.
  20. In my experience, when you get an obese patient that can lie supine, try using the Reeves streacher. You place him in it supine, attach 2 ropes to the handles at the head and have 2 guys at the 2 handles at the foot and glide him down the stairs instead of trying to lift him. It works really good because he isn't being lifted but gliding (sliding) slowly and controlled by the ropes and 2 guys at the foot end. It will save your backs and the patient can't fall because he's already lying down on the stairs. The new Stryker stair chairs with the tracks are also very helpful ... again, gliding, not lifting. Save your backs and reduce the possibility of lawsuits.
  21. Does anyone have a picture of the O2 holder? Is it heavy or difficult to attach?
  22. I had learned of the Cincinatti pre hospital stroke scale as follows: F - Assess Facial droop A - Asess Arm drift S - Assess Speech T - Determine Time that symptoms first occurred Follow your protocols but basics such as airway control (suction. A lot of CVA patients lose control to swallow saliva and drool), High concentration oxygen, IVSL (large bore), monitor EKG & V/S continously, rapid transport to a stroke center with a notification of your Cincinatti Pre Hospital Stroke Scale results ahead of your arrival to the ER. Remember - "Time is brain function" so don't delay transport. Also consider, hypoglycemia, head trauma, cardiac insuffiency (poor perfusion to the brain), hypoxia, etc.
  23. "The new phone book is here! The new phone book is here!" Got it yesterday.......Good for another 3 years of gainful employment!
  24. Thanks for the info....No need to contact you off line just yet. I was just more curious then anything else.
  25. Does the reciprocity apply to Paramedics as well? New Jersey and Connecticut?
