This is a rerun of the same discussion over the years.  Nothing is going to change so long as we have these little empires and emperors running things.

First, I want to preface this by saying the dispatcher at 60 Control who handled this incident did an EXCELLENT job coordinating everything given the situation. It was almost mind boggling to try and keep track of everything and he nailed it.

For those that didn't monitor, there was a cardiac arrest involving a crew member on a tugboat in the Hudson River. The tugboats location was static, but had to be determined further. It was one worst incidents I've ever heard logistically play out just given the fact that there was no coordination by any unit with anyone else. Everybody was freelancing, and everybody wanted to play. There was no concrete information about which boat had EMT's or Medics. It was, literally and this was stated on the radio several times, whoever got to the boat first got the patient. No one knew who was the true incident commander, and there was no true command.  Rockland couldn't communicate with Westchester and vice versa in a timely or efficient manner. Both Rockland and Westchester were basically both working the same incident completely separate from one another with no idea of who was doing what.

It also should have been kept in mind that it was pitch black out, and the current very strong, with heavy winds. You had rescue boats swarming from each directions with limited to no awareness of anyone else in the area. Responders putting other responders in danger.

The inefficiency, to say the least, could have made the difference in the outcome of a cardiac arrest. I get everyone wants to help, but sometimes you're doing more harm then good.

And, at the very least, Westchester and Rockland need to develop a better system of interagency incident command and training, especially since there seems to be a very large overlap of jurisdiction. There should be numerous drills and tabletop exercises on a regular basis, as well as a single channel for Hudson River incidents that is primary and a dedicated tactical channel that both counties can access.

60 Control needs to be able to have the authority to control units, such as to stand down units or give specific commands in a situation like this where no one else is capable of taking charge over such a widespread area.

Another thought. Westchester DES needs to appoint a Marine Battalion that is familiar and capable of coordinating incidents on the Hudson, and capable of taking command of multiple jurisdictions and equipped with Rockland radios. Or appoint WCPD SOD as primary command and coordination since they have better resources.

Quite frankly....one of the major issues was that no one could take personal blame  for the situations....it was the circumstances at play.

AGAIN...EXCELLENT JOB BY THE 60 CONTROL DISPATCHER, who made the best of what and who he had to work with! It was almost mind boggling to try and keep track of everything and he nailed it.

On Friday, there was a large brush fire in Katonah. WCPD Aviation was requested for the Bambi bucket, which was unavailable due to weather conditions, and for aerial reconnaissance to determine the best access to the fire.

If Westchester County had a drone, this brush fire could have been a perfect use. FLIR, the thermal imaging leader, and DJI, a leading drone company, are developing a thermal imaging drone. This new drone is capable of downlinking into the large screen monitors of the WCDES Fieldcom, and WCPD Mobile Command unit. It would make the aerial mast CCTV cameras they are equipped with obsolete. And for example of another incident, this drone could have been deployed at the tugboat incident to aid in the search for the missing victims.

In the law enforcement sector of the county, this is also perfect in a perp search, or a missing person search.

I personally feel that anything that gives an incident commander more situational awareness and real time size up data is a good thing. In deploying crews at brush fires and missing person searches, amongst others, a drone can be invaluable.

Yes, we are getting a new custom built 2016 Segrave engine, thanks to Hudson Valley Fire Equipment, LLC. It will be a straight engine, with no extrication tools. It will be replacing our 1992 Spart/Beck rig 267. Chief, and crew went out to Wisconsin over the weekend to finalize blue prints.I Will keep you guys updated. Here is our new baby, well at least on paper.

Yeah, I have the facts, as members that actually contribute to this thread in a positive fashion have posted. Try reading the thread before you reply to it. I know you SAY you're not coming back, but I felt "obligated" to reply to this. You could have just added the information you had. Many people, including myself, have no idea that Transcare in Putnam is a different company then in Westchester until @nyemtgirl's post. Additionally, Transcare ITSELF has issued a letter that they are shutting down operations, yet have formed a different company to operate some divisions. Which I have no idea how that works in business lingo. And I also clearly stated some information could be incorrect as all this is currently breaking.

Whats interesting is that in Westchester if you created a county wide department, minus Yonkers and New Rochelle. Closed fire houses because some small towns have 4 houses when they probably need 1 or 2. Or you have 2 towns next to each other and Town A fire house sits right on the town line that borders Town B and is closer to respond to areas in Town B but doesn't and Town B firehouse is half a mile or more away. If you consolidated, closed firehouses, got rid of apparatus. Westchester probably only needs 2 Rescues. 1 in the north and 1 in the south. If Manhattan only has 1 then westchester doesn't need more. Towns in the Sound Shore probably can get away with 6 firehouses. Now think about the savings- less apparatus, less firehouses to keep maintaining, the equipment. Thats a lot of savings. Plus in this study did they count the total amount of volunteers? meaning the non active guys? I have nothing against volunteers none at all. But common sense around Westchester is you could probably save millions by consolidating and have response based not on town lines. Taxes are high enough and i just believe this would bring savings. But it will never happen based on many factors.

At risk of unintentionally insulting volunteers, I might ask if the FASNY study took into account how much money would be saved in property/insurance losses if a paid staffed FD was there to effect more positive outcomes sooner? Not a knock on the potential quality of work that a VFD can accomplish, but a realistic view of how much different a fire looks at minute 4 vs. minute 12. Take the same firefighters put them in the station when the call comes in nearly every time, and see how that affects the outcomes.

I'm not generally a rear mount tower ladder kind of guy, but this is one nice Seagrave rear mount tower ladder, especially since it has the Aerialscope bucket. Wish Seagrave made this in a mid-mount with the full walkway ladder.
This one is serving Laurel, MD, in Prince George's County, and is a 2015 Seagrave Marauder II with a 105' Rear Mount Apollo II Tower Ladder.
