Possibly for the reason I stated in the thread that spun off from this one - lack of confidence in treating a trauma patient for the duration of ground transport.

It is very respectable, but only when you consider that some agencies on some days take 60-90 to get a call covered.
On the same note its criminal that the homeless in every city get an ambulance in 8 minutes or less and a high end taxpayer gets a hope and a prayer.

If this was a valid reason (as opposed to an excuse) for the benevolent to not pay, then they must look at everything they do and if it does not include EVERY member then they should not fund it. How many annual dinners do they fund? Does every single member go to these dinners?

If YFD had paid members to roll out immediately this station would work. Without that it is a hidden away party palace.

    How bout this suggestion.....
Save your silly helmet cam for your next family trip and spend more time focused on getting water on the fire.
All of our new wonders in the service are more focused on crafting the next big fire/rock video for the annual banquet (which probably consumes 50% of the Depts annual budget), than learning the fundamentals of their trade.

I think there are far more unprofessional things on the radio. Like, third tones for a crew... An EMT is needed....
XXXX on scene, working fire, retone for all available personnel...

Nice picture of the probie sitting on the rig. Good story too. But the NYT should have a picture of the guy or gal who didn't get hired because of the lawsuit that brought about the priority hires.

Ok, I get it, every proby class has a 36 year old proby priority hire making grabs of an infant during their first 10-75, totally normal and not extra ordinary or newsworthy in any way.
You would think you just take the positive press for once and move on...

Danbury is 15 minutes away, Westchester is at least 40 if not more. In Albany County they had a system where each dept if they had the desire could be a part of a specialized team. Luckily here our soil is not very sandy so its fairly stable. This was operator error, not a result of a true trench collapse. Realistically a cache of shoring should be kept somewhere other than at Home Depot in case $hits on. Basic building construction and knowing about loads and how to transfer them is not as common as it once was. New guys text and are on playstation all day and not out building a tree fort like they used to.

I am not sure how many of you have pulled into a job with 5-6 firefighters but let me tell you its no fun. decisions have to be made and made quickly--the lives of your firefighters depend on those decisions. second due mutual aid may be coming but its those first few minutes that are critical. From everything I have read about this job it was handled--professionally with firefighters doing what they have been trained to do since probie school--they put their lives on the line for one of their citizens.
you can criticize all you want but until you have stood in those boots and made those decisions you just don't understand.

What no wetdown? You mean no bringing half million/million dollar apparatus from all around the county away from their jurisdiction just to spray each other with hoses and the siren pedals pegged for 10 mins? shucks.....

The Uconn Health Center Fire Dept in Farmington CT, which is a ALS fly care FD for a hand full of towns in the area, has them for 2 years now and has seen an increase of ROSC in pre hospital but im unsure of hospital outcomes, theyre great, they free up a person and are very consistent and dont get tired, going down stairs theyre great and in the back of the truck it makes for a safer ride for the attendents being seated more appropriatly.

Its a judgement call, at 1,000' half way, and 3,000' we have red lenghts so the driver knows they gotta stop and drop an inline assist valve, you can drop it earlier say for a steep incline.

I, along with 25 of my Brothers spent 2 days paying our respect to Lt Walsh and FF Kennedy. I have to tell you that there needs to be a class on proper etiquette taught to the younger generation of firefighters. I can't tell you how many members I saw carrying cases of beer on their shoulders walking the streets where our Brother was being celebrated. Guys just walking by the church with 24 on their shoulder. I don't really know if they were career or volley and don't really care who they are affiliated with but their actions disgusted me as well as other New Rochelle Firefighters. If you want to have a few beers between the service and the last drive past the sea of blue please go to a bar. If you want to tailgate and party in front of the civilians like morons please go to a football or baseball game. In front of the church and on peoples lawns is not the place!!!!

We do both, depending on the situation, either drop ponds and do shuttles with mutual aid tankers or lay from the scene to the water source or vise versa, on our E-1 we have 4,000' of 5" hose, we also have to 2 manifolds we drop at certain points (every 1,500 feet, or a incline ect).

Throw in my 2 cents, another major side effect is if a LEO/FD first responder were to administer the narcan IN, and this guy was speed ballin (cocaine/heroin mix) the narcan will clear the depressent (heroin) and this guy with not only wake up but the stimulant (cocaine) will take over with tremendous agitation or even worst, cardiac arrest. Having those locked narcotics (ativan, versed, valium) from the ALS unit can help prevent this guy from further injury to himself and the crew or even arrest, So is it good for our first responders? Sure, but like every drug theres a time and a place IMO.

If the junkie is fighting with you he(she) probably isn't a candidate for narcan anyway. The whole point is to counter CNS depression brought about by opiate overdose and I never met one of those who had much fight in 'em. Most of them are too out of it to even BREATHE!!!
  22. Ladder44 liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in First Responders have access to Narcan in NJ
Having been assaulted and witnessing other responders being assaulted (after 1 individual was "agitated" he attacked ER staff member causing serious head trauma, then he pulled a knife on security. it took 6 responders to restrain him including 1 ESU officer, who almost lost his gun during the fight). Since that was about 25 years ago and I'm still in it, I am not worried as I KNOW how to titrate (adjust) the dose to bring back respirations, but keep them mellow enough that no one is put in danger. My concern is this is not being taught to all these minimally trained responders.
And a BVM will keep them alive. I would rather see that in every PD car before narcan. Since it could help many people, while narcan only helps a small % of that.

This makes me want to puke. It's no longer about who is better suited for the position, it's a numbers game. I work in NYC and I'm buying an extinguisher, a water can, a bailout bag, and a AV-3000 with an escape canister just in case a truck full of these know-nothing cry-babies shows up in front of my office building for a working fire.
