Yeah guys I don't think we should discuss the merits and pitfalls of different strategies and tactics on a firefighting site. Its much more conducive to firefighter safety and the perfection of our trade to discuss the legality of [insert random color] lights or whose new engine has the shiniest Q on the front bumper.
I doubt your department is from this town in Europe, why get so bent out of shape? There's nothing wrong with learning from other people's mistakes, particularly when you're not in danger of personally insulting anyone here on the site. Obviously a video isn't the ENTIRE operational picture of whats going on, but you can't doubt this video exemplifies some stark differences between standard firefighting here in the US as opposed to Europe. Personally I find the cultural difference when it comes to the different fire services very interesting, and definitely worth discussing.

Ive been a member of this site for a long time now. In the past, there have been posts made by Chief Flynn that have gotten under my skin.
However and maybe its because ive grown up a bit, ive come to realize that he has opinions and is certainly entitled to them as is anyone else.
Chief Flynn has worked his way up the ladder of a very busy, pro-active and versatile career fire department. For that, i have nothing but respect for the man, as he has certainly earned it.
Chief Flynn is obviously a very intelligent man who has so much fire service knowledge and experience to share. For that, i have always enjoyed reading his posts as they are well thought out and written.
Maybe Chief Flynn indeed dislikes volunteer firefighters or the volunteer fire service as a whole, but you know what...who cares? Again, he is entitled to his opinions. Personally, i could care less who likes who and who doesn't.
Many of his posts and comments aimed at the volunteer fire service have merit. I guess maybe for some people the truth hurts.
Personally, i enjoy being a volunteer firefighter and helping the community (sorry if that sounds cliche). I have always tried to be the best firefighter i can be by taking as many courses as possible, training as much as possible and treating every day as a learning experience.
People need to worry about themselves and how they can be a better person, firefighter, etc and improve themselves and their agencies.
That said, stay safe and oh yeah, QTIP.
Now lets get back to the original topic at hand please.

Being a jew myself I can speak freely. These individuals in almost EVERY aspect take advantage of the Earth. From the blatant violation of the sanctity of marriage to the flagrant misuse of the vehicle and traffic laws they just rape and pillage. I am so happy that I live in Putnam far from the filth that they call home in many towns in Orange and Rockland. I feel for all of you that must deal with these people with such a feel of entitlement. They use their supposed block voting to scare every single politician in to succumbing to their needs. We need someone with a set to just tell them to STFU get off welfare and stop playing games. All we need is a law stating that two people living together legally, and verified through surveillance, which I am sure we can get volunteers to do, shall not be the beneficiary of social services.

Did the eng forget its ground ladders????
Im just kidding but where i volly we dont have a ladder nor do our neighbors, even if we call for one which is 15+ mins from request to scene time it will never make the front of the building either due to supply lines or driveways are just manuverable for a prius, but im all for a truck company on any house fire, moving from southern westchester to NW CT is a huge wake up call, i asked wheres the ladder? "oh we dont need one we only have a few 3 story houses mostly 2 and 2.5" ARE YOU KIDDING ME was my answer, ever hear of safe working platform and long runs on roofs? "we have a 36' ground ladder" Oh boy....

Nicely put. That reminded me of that house fire in Port Chester a few weeks ago. Ang put up a photo of lines stretched across the street and a police cruiser was parked in the middle of it all, if he was needed someplace else quick he would have never gotten by in time.
I wasn't planning on posting, but this makes up for a "like". Apparently I can't like anymore posts today

With that said i agree from a budget perspective but couldnt you say this is the same thing as why career FD are having trouble adding or atleast keeping their current staffing levels? "Well the neighbors to the north or south or wherever have plenty of guys or they also have career guys at the station, i'll only take them less than 10 mins to get to the scene". Mutal aid seem to be used as a crutch when money is an issue deal. Can you really guarantee that ladder will get out the door and to the scene in time, nevermind physically to the front of the building with lines being laid ect

Sorry but NYS doesn't decide who does and doesn't take training. Each individual volunteer fire department establishes its minimum training requirements and decides if they're going to enforce them. Do you have any idea how many times I heard officers saying "well, he's not meeting the training requirements but he's a nice guy (or) he shows up at calls". So they let a substandard member skate based on popularity. And without training what good is he showing up anyway!
Career departments have a state mandated training program that every firefighter must complete before being called a firefighter.
This disparity and the ongoing opposition to any minimum training standard for volunteer FF's in NYS is what fuels this stupid us vs. them BS. So long as there are two different training standards and absolutely no enforcement of the one on the volunteer side of the house there will be this argument. You know why paid and volunteer guys get along so easily in other places? Because they all have the same training!
If you don't have the time to get the training, you shouldn't be responding to emergencies. Do you go to an auto mechanic who doesn't have any training or do you want your car fixed by someone that actually knows what's wrong with it. Untrained people on the fireground are hazards to us all but we don't do anything about it. In fact we support organizations that fight against common standards, common training, and a single definition of FF.
So what you get up when the tones drop? That's what you signed up for. Do the job but do it right whether you collect a paycheck or not!
People are merely pointing out that the excursions to Lake George and extravagant parties at the Ritz and other similar places are what make people suspicious of the use of funds. Some of these parties are over the top and wildly expensive. That's a tough one to sell to the public in this economy. That's the point.
How much was spent on these parties over the five year span. If it's a 100K that's a lot of training, equipment or reductions in tax subsidies.
And don't forget the additional "tax" we all pay that gets squandered - the 2% monies!

Waterbury is big mix of ghetto, sub-urban and rural area, they have a busy FD with 8-9 eng co's (driver/officer and 2) and 3 truck co's 2 rear mount straight sticks and a mid mount tower (again driver/officer and 2) and they have a heavy rescue (driver/officer/3?) they cover 28sq miles with population of 110,000ish, this is a great busy dept, its roughly the size of yonkers but half the population, when they call mutal aid you know its a big incident, i live 20 miles north and can see the header.

    For all of you guys pushing the "EMD Angle";
Falls; Public Assist (NO injuries and NO priority symptoms) 17A3 = EMS Only on my cardset....so to answer the question, where I work, lift assists are handled by EMS.
I will go on record as saying, again, that I am not a firm beleiver in the entire EMD concept. The pre-arrival instructions for CPR, choking, and hemmorage control are true lifesavers, but the majority of the other "fluff" is just that, and almost all callers in an urban area, are not receptive to it. "Just send the MFing ammolance!".
The check and advise system is set up for failure UNLESS the responding officers or firemen are at least EMT's AND carry gear...
THIS GUY right here F'ing gets it! Great post!
  19. Ladder44 liked a post in a topic by Dinosaur in Who Should Handle Lift Assists?
I think it is disgraceful that people claiming to be emergency service professionals think that lift-assist calls are "nuisance" calls or the people who call 911 seeking assistance for a loved one shouldn't receive the best possible care possible.
99% of the time a lift-assist is a perfect public relations call. You get to be the hero and restore normalcy to someone who is in distress and needs your help. You're also helping taxpayers who are paying for your service? How can you collect tax money from someone and then decide not to help them when they call?
As for "taking a unit out of service" when another call drops, what kind of call volume do most volunteer agencies have? What's the turnaround time on a lift-assist? You can't pick grandma up off the floor and move on to the next job? What the heck are you doing?

All we required is work boots, long pants (jeans), long sleeves, gloves and a helmet and i belive this is per NFPA as well. Bunker gear is just to bulky to be in the woods all day and fatigue will kick in much more quickly
