First, your question could be raised RIGHT NOW about the 2nd alarm in Valhalla.  They skipped over a staffed tower ladder in White Plains and Fairview to call a tower ladder in West Harrison.

If you have such an issue that the county team that takes over 40 mins to get out and on location ... And we all know that 2001 responds by himself to check and verify (regardless of what the IC states or requests [EDIT: This JUST happened at the Valhalla fire...]) and then an unknown response of unknown number and unknown trained personnel respond... Wasn't utilized, call the Assistant Chief of the department and ask him himself.

Better yet, because you know exactly who he is, why not ask him face to face of why he made that call, rather than anonymously and blindly question every facet of his decision made yesterday. Figure out exactly why he did, then come back and with facts, explain it to us.

Because they'd be ridiculed by people on this site for not calling a closer department that has the capabilities.

Im sure HFD will either recoup the cost involved from YHFD or will absorb the costs as part of its budgeted mutual aid expenditures.

My understanding is that the HFD has a proactive automatic/ mutual aid plan in place with several of its neighbor fire districts/ departments. Im sure it's fire protection was not reduced.

The HFD Capt /YHFD I.C. knew what resourses he needed to mitigate the situation and got them to the incident in a timely manner.

     Perhaps unusual but effective.

especially when the county has a HAZMAT team and resources sitting at DES with the special ops chief on call.

It does seem like this will be hard to justify, barring some compelling reason.

I do not live in the Hartsdale Fire District, but if I did, I would be up in arms about this. You pull an engine from service with a crew of firefighters, leaving the district less protected, by 1 engine company and 2-4 firefighters.

There is absolutely no reason for this to happen.

A HFD captain happens to be the voli assistant chief in Yorktown who requested this department specifically to the scene.

If my taxes were paying for a HFD rig to travel to Yorktown with firefighters, I would not be happy.

    -Fuel costs
    -OT costs to backfill
-Reduced fire protection to the district, until backfill personnel arrives.......

    Wrong on several different levels.

Maybe I'm hearing things, but I swore I just heard Hartsdale Engine 170 requested and dispatched to Turcos in Yorktown on a fluid spill.

I know several members of YHFD are on the job in Hartsdale.

    Anyone have further?

A quick look at their apparatus shows that their only other fire suppression units are "engine tankers" by their designation, 1000 and 1750 gal. This would make me think that a sizable portion of their district has no or un-reliable water sources. Running a "quint" with only 300 gallons of water would be un-arguably a horrible decision if that is the case. If you are only going to maintain two pieces, then the second must have a considerable water capacity as well. It appears they consolidated a medium duty rescue and pumper into the 2013 replacement as well.

Maybe these gentlemen are just ahead of their time in acknowledging they have no true need for a tower ladder and that a 3/4 of a million dollar ladder truck sitting around is not a good investment.

I think this leads up to many additional questions. A check of this town's total population shows in 2010 they had 4,247 people.

    1) With a small community population such as this, "would there really be a need for this ladder truck"

    2) What additional ladder trucks are available through a mutual aid system.

    3) What types and sizes of buildings are in this town ?

    4) How many members are certified to operate this piece of apparatus. More importantly how many are able to respond in a moments notice.

Based on a picture that was sent to me of the 4th alarm fire today (11/21), this building appears to be a 1 1/2 story frame, perhaps 20 x 60 from what I can see. At the time this picture was taken, it is totally involved.

KME's bid is the lowest by a large  margin. Maybe they lowballed it because they want the visibility and bragging rights that producing an FDNY rescue brings.  I like the FDNY Engines they built, but I haven't heard any feedback....anyone of our members in FDNY using them have feedback?

And one would think those would be the only three manufacturers who would be able to comply, since they are the only ones that have an cab meeting FDNY specs already in production.

I like KME, but it's sad we'll probably never see a Seagrave rescue in NYC.

It's a Quint......Why are they not running it First Due on structural assignments?? Sounds like there is more to the story.

That is a very versatile piece of equipment.

On a follow up to this story, just got word of a 4th Alarm going on in this town as I write this (Monday, 11/21/2016 at 0900 hours).

We recently put into service new Scott Air Packs.  One of the most notable things about it is that the PASS alarm volumes are lower than our older units.

We put the packs in different locations in the training house and sent members in to locate them.  The volume of the older units would drown out the sound of the newer SCBAs.

To get more of a side by side comparison, we'd put the packs next to one another - both inside and outside the building - and noticed a marginal difference.

This is in no way a knock on the new units, and in no way is this a real "study," but this is definitely something we all should be weary of.

Refer to Yonkers FD and New Rochelle FD to answer most of these questions ,,,particularly those about staffing

Once again, another page of photos has been added to the fdnysbravest.com web site.

This is Page 24 of a very busy 1980s for the members of the FDNY. Second only to their prior so called: "FDNY War Years" of the earlier 1970s.

I think it's safe to say, "some pretty impressive photos" to say the least.

LOL, history is repeating itself here.

If you want to know what fallout (sorry) will come from a major nuclear power plant closure, just look at what happened 25+ years ago when Andrew Cuomo's father Mario Cuomo was the governor of NY state, and pushed agreements to shut down Long Island's brand sparkling new Shoreham nuclear power plant.
    http://www.nytimes.com/1989/03/01/nyregion/cuomo-and-lilco-sign-a-new-accord-to-shut-shoreham.html?pagewanted=all

The electricity customers on Long Island got hosed on that one, and instead of getting cheaper electricity rates from the nuclear plant , they have paid some of the highest rates in the country for the past 25 years.
    http://www.newsday.com/long-island/lipa-electricity-among-priciest-in-northeast-1.11937361

The school district where the Long Island plant was located, which used to be one of the best school districts in the whole country also got hosed when they lost a major source of school tax revenue.
    http://www.nytimes.com/1991/11/12/nyregion/the-fallout-of-the-demise-of-shoreham.html?pagewanted=all

There are a lot of reasons why Mario Cuomo was eventually voted out of the NY governor's office, but the anger of many Long Islanders over the forced Shoreham nuclear plant shut down was part of it.   I'm surprised our current governor does not think that the Indian Point shutdown will have a similar political blowback to his political career..

Also, Is it really a good idea to switch a major portion of NYC's energy supply to come from a 333 mile long electric line from Quebec, Canada???

I heard on the radio this morning that the Governor did not even have the courtesy to contact the mayor of Buchanan (the municipality were Indian Point is located) to discuss the subject. She found out about it by reading the NY Times.

Clean, safe, abundant energy.  Why would anyone want Indian point to close???  That is simply moronic.  Go to progress.org if you want answers to this question.  Cuomo's pockets have once again been lined with money from special interest groups and huge gas companies.  Indian point is one of the safest places in America.
