Good questions Cogs. In my personal opinion the US should have made that country a parking lot a long time ago. But, with the recent actions by that crazy man they call a leader, sit and wait. play the ally of a country who starts the attack.

Matty O was a great guy. He also did a short stint with us at Montrose FD. From the first time I met him he always made me laugh and smile. Matt was a great guy and had an awesome sense of humor. If you where ever down Matt was the guy to see. And from what I hear from the Boys at the VA that worked on his shift one hell of a cook. GONNA MISS YOU MATTY O!!! RIP

Many of you might be wondering what the Outreach Program is for. Please allow me to elaborate on what the purpose of the program is for. A committee meets up and decides on what places need AED's. Currently AED's have been donated to Charles Cook Pool for the Town of Cortlandt summer camp, to the new Sensory Gym at FGL elementry school. If you know of a place that needs an AED please PM me and I will greatfully pass it on to the committee.

Wouldn't planning ahead (pre-planning), knowing your district, knowing your own resources and having knowledge of available Mutual Aid resources be the grounds for calling or not calling in more help?
Let me try to explain this better...
I know my own district fairly well. I know where we have hydrants, where we don't, where I can send units to find water. I know (just by growing up in my town and driving around it) what areas have new construction, which are illegal multi-families with probable ballong construction and exposure issues. I know that certain streets are barely wide enough for our rigs to pass on a normal day and which are impassable when we get snow.
If I get dispatched to a structure fire in our district, the wheels in the ol' noodle start spinning. Based on my information from dispatch, updates from the PD, the location, the time of day, the weather and a few more things - I know whether we need more help right away or if it's something that should be manageable with our usual first alarm resources. If it's in a building that presents itself to be more complex to us or if we encounter exposure issues or some other gifts from Mr. Murphy, then I know I can call for resources to the scene to stage.
But, to be humble and honest, if you give me a "bread and butter" private dwelling fire in one of the capes or ranch homes we have in town - I don't think I'm going to need more to the scene then we already get on a first alarm. In some cases over the years I have called an extra Engine or a Truck to fire scenes because I needed manpower or I wanted to be proactive and have them there in case things went south. But I don't think I'm going to start calling stuff to the scene to stand around if the potential of putting them to use is minimal.
Fire away.... but that's my opinion.

I will happily be the first to trounce.
If you have no reserve and a truck finds extension on the floor above or the cockloft of the adjacent building who stretches the next line?
When a victim is discovered and that seach team leaves the building with the victim who continues the search?
When the nozzle teams recieves burns who takes over their line?
These are all things that happen at fires frequently enough that we should be prepared to address. If you have no reserves I know the answer you end up using the FAST. In which case you have no one available if someone really gets into trouble. Oh and your breaking the law.
If you have reserves in the street behind you all you have to do is look at your clip board see who's up next turn to them and put them to work. Once the fire is under control you can use them for relief or release them. They might actually learn something from just standing there observing.
Call all the help you need and a little more. It's easy to tell from the IA's most departments around here play catch up.
Don't worry about what they say on EMT Bravo worry about the safety of your members and the public you serve.

The county requires you have a basic education for this job.

When I was younger I considered it, but after the training films (they were commonly shown on Saturday mornings in the 1960/70's) I did not know if I had the desire to deal with the trouble makers in the parks.

The clincher that it was not the job for me was when the public schools taught us about the 2nd ammendment and the right to arm bears.
  7. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic in Minimum Level Of EMS Training For Firefighters?
I'm going to go in a different direction then I normall do on this topic, being I for a long time believed that EMT-B should be the minimum. But as time has marched on I've started changing some of my thoughts on it and would like to use some comments already made on the thread to put my thoughts and maybe spark some discussion. Before that I would like to say that I belive that the FF 1 curriculum should require CPR with AED (pretty much standard today) for certification. Many states already have this and I in fact had to have it to get my FF 1 in Virigina and had to have an active card to complete FF 2. For the state certification...not national cert (Virginia gives you national cert just for the course, testing and evaluation. No extra testing like NY, which you then have to have CPR w/ first aid).
    1. CPR w/ first aid and AED: Great, sounds nice, gives you basics for cardiac arrest and some boo boos. But what happens when it gets beyond a simple minor injury and the person is alive? The addage a little bit of information can be dangerous applies here and I've seen it far to often with civilians, firefighters and police officers.
    2. CFR: I've never been a fan of this curriculum. Again, the little bit of knowledge, but the more I look at it, its not a bad basis for those who aren't tasked with providing EMS on a regular basis. It gives an inbetween of first aid training and EMT.I will comment on it in the next item, but I do not feel this should be the level of training for agencies that deliver BLSFR as a regular service.
    3. EMTB: To me this should be the gold standard. While not in favor of the curriculum, it gives a decent amount of information for those to make decisions based on symptoms present. Set the expectation and people will rise to the occassion. This to me is the MINIMUM any agency that is delivering any form of EMS response should be at. My opinion but CFR is not the level to be a standard street provider on a consistant basis.

To answer a lot of the comments made about Patterson Fire, as I was the one who took the time to search for the grant, do the research, write the grant and then submit it we just got word of our award several days ago. As the NY Lottery says "you can't win if you don't play"
One of the requirements was to be in the surrounding communities and counties. The other requirement was not to just submit a wish list of useless equipment that would just be cool to have and never use.
Instead we submitted the grant with a plan. We are aggressively working to improve the towns water supply. By receiving these fund we would look to make much needed repairs to drafting hydrants that are out of service and install up to 21 drafting Hydrants in existing sources over the next couple of years.
This plan also consists of an ordinance that is scheduled to go infront of the town that would require new residential and commercial development to install either drafting hydrants in near by water sources or to install inground tanks.
This is all being done to provide the citizens of our town with a sufficient network of drafting Hydrants and as water supply is 40% of a towns ISO rating, we will be ready for them when the time comes to contact the in the far future.

Bedford PD on active investigation. From what I could ascertain two men entered the Wells Fargo bank in Katonah (Katonah ave) and are currently wanted for bank fraud (I think I heard possibly trying to cash bad checks). One vehicle fled the scene and was attempted to be pulled over by units in the area of Route 35 @ Woodsbridge Rd (Rt-117) but failed to yield. Vehicle stopped and one suspect apprehended in the area of Route 35 & Route 100 in Somers.
Second subject still at large in the area of the Katonah business district, specifically in the woods behind Peppinos. Hotline description is of a black male 5'11" thin build with goatee wearing dark suit or wind breaker, dark shoes last seen on foot. MTA stopping trains to check for subject.
Aviation requested but have extended ETA for refueling.
We'll have more as it becomes available. Back to you in the studio.....
EDIT: Search called off at about 1600. Positive ID made of the male at large by conductor on southbound train. Made it to at least the White Plains station. Possibly the brother of the first suspect. Surprisingly I didn't see anything on lohud about this.

that is correct. the three men who bought the company have many nursing homes. Care1EMS is NOT licensed in NJ. only in PA, and NY. The new owners are trying very hard to expand the territory they have now. Many changes are comming along. I have also heard a possible bid for the Putnam ALS contract when it comes up. The new owners have been intouch with other companies to get a better working relationship between companies. Considering we are all in the same line of work and are here to help people. I hope my input helps sorry it took so long to respond.
