Great job to all! A special pat on the back to all the dispatchers out there, especially at 60 Control! The unsung heroes of emergency services. Stay safe everyone.

As stated, the Seasonal Park Rangers carry O.C. spray, expandable batons, and handcuffs as well as having peace officer status. The park is staffed at minimum with 1 supervisor, 2 police officers, and 10 SPR's, more as needed or depending on the crowds expected. The regulars still refer to the SPR's as specials. To be hired, individuals applying must pass psychological exams, among other things. I've read comments elsewhere that Specials back in the day acted like professionals and wanted to be cops, and that is no different then the SPR's today, other than the fact we don't have a firearm and look like bus drivers. In the past few years, I've had at least 10 friends that were specials, sorry park rangers, hired by various law enforcement agencies around the county.

Your comment is foolish, asinine, moronic, and not very thought out. To blame a Department for giving the black eye instead of the individual. That eye has been beaten by so many people over the history of the fire service it is never going away. Who ever blames the Department should look into there own closet and examine there skeletons before blaming the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department for this. I am sure you all have a few things that are in there that never made the news or bought to the attention of the police.

Yes I am a member of Sleepy Hollow Fire Department. Trent if you meet him before this incident was very active here; you never expected this from him. But he has been accused of committing the most heinous crime a firefighter can commit do I feel hurt and betrayed. Yes I do. Do I stand by my Department of course I do and will always. I am proud of my Chiefs and Officers and fellow Firefighters who help keep Sleepy Hollow safe.

Member of Sleepy Hollow Fire Department and Damn Proud of it!!!!

Within the past couple weeks, Riverside Hose Company #4 of Tarrytown took delivery of their 1965 Anniversary Edition Seagrave. This rig served from 1965-1988 until it was replaced by Riverside's current apparatus, a 1988 E-One. The truck was trailered back home from California, where it has spent much it's time away from home. The rig is in fairly decent shape and still pumps. The Riverside crew plans on restoring it back to proper order.

The crew from Consolidated Engine Company came to visit with their 1974 Ward LaFrance which they have recently taken delivery of as well.

And what is any different in this tragic case than what happens virtually everywhere? The former chief spoke. He's apparently a city fireman. **When he tried to bring the fire department up to OSHA standards he was asked to resign by the current mayor. **Edit: according to the report in lohud.
I remember having to fight to get the air quality in our firehouses cleaned up. We had two members who died young of strange cancers. You'd think it was a no brainer that the department would take the air quality issue head on. Yet we faced a hostile administration at the time. I was told by a commissioner, "We can do one firehouse per year"; wonderful when you have five stations. So we fought them, we got the money from FEMA and we got it done, **** them.
Time and again, OSHA standards are taken lackadaisically by those who are "in charge." And if this is the case in Tarrytown, the investigation will reveal who, what, where. What a damn shame, what a waste of two human beings lives.
This is the purpose of a union having a Health and Safety Committee. Those on the committee have got to fight, become "unpopular" (sometimes even the ones you are fighting FOR turn on you), yet at the end of the day you can go home and say at the very least you did your best for what is right. Some things are worth fighting for.
So many advances in safety on the job come from the employees pushing the administration to get it done. It should not be this way, and in many places with progressive leadership, it is not. Those lucky enough to have a chief or a supervisor, or a mayor who will actually do things properly (I don't care if it's for CYA or actually because they care) should not take it for granted. Just get it done.
Too late for two more guys. Rest in peace.

    I
remember this day like it was yesterday. My dad, Tony Dragonetti, was
assigned to E-254 and worked the 9x6 tour. He was walking into the
firehouse as E-254 & L-153 were pulling out onto Avenue U. He would
have been on the roof in place of Terry Cambell who was badly burned. I was 14 and remember waking up to my mom's screams,
when she heard the news of the fire on the radio. We took a ride to the
scene from LI and found my dad sitting on the back step of 254's rig in
tears (my dad never cries). I never saw my mom hug my dad like the way she did at that
moment. I still well up with tears when I think about that scene. It
was a sigh of relief for me to see my dad safe and extremely sad at the
same time to hear him say the names of the guys that perished. I spent
my entire childhood life and beyond at the firehouse on Avenue U and these brave
men were my family and will always have a place in my heart. May they
    be remembered forever and RIP......
6 NYC firefighters lost their lives at the Waldbaum's fire on August 2, 1978. This was the largest loss of firefighters in a single fire in Brooklyn. The firefighters died at the fire when the roof collapsed, and 34 others were injured. At the time, it was the worst single disastrous fire for FDNY.
The heroic firefighters who died are FF George Rice, 38, Ladder 153, FF James McManus, 48. Cov. Lt. James Cutillo, 39, 33rd Batt., FF Harold Hastings, 39, 42nd Batt., FF Charles Bouton,38, L. 156 and William O'Connor,29 of L. 156.

Very little changes with a tiller vs. a rear mount. The tillerman is the O/V, so once on the scene of a job, he goes to work as the O/V would in any company. The chauffeur will set up the aerial the same way he would in a rear mount. There's really not much too it. Hit the parking break, put down both tormentors and raise the stick. I've only worked in a tiller a handful of times as a detail, but for operating purpose (other than driving) they act the same as a rearmount. Once the ladder is in position it's available for the roofman to take up, if he hasn't found an adjoining building that is. The chauffeur is also now free to assist with ground ladders in the front of the building, or assist the O/V if he's made it to the rear. The chauffeur becomes the utility man, just as he would in any other stick. Now, TL's are a whole different animal...
