What would your chief say...

Found this on a local Larchmont site that lets their readers rant on various topics. Does your department allow civilians on the rigs?

Today 8/1/08 @ around 8:25 a.m. while walking in the upper-level parking lot toward the overpass entrance of the Larchmont Station, I was almost run over by a Larchmont Fire Dept. truck that stopped at the same entrance to drop off a woman in business clothes who proceeded to the platform for the 8:33 to NYC. I inquired how she was able to arrange such shiny red transportation services and she replied that her husband was with the LFD. I thought it was both a funny site and a questionable use of resources.

They just got a 3 year contract with 4% raise each year with increased duties and responsibilities to the village. I wonder what other duties and responsibilities are in the contract. House sitting for the Mayor while she campaigns for State Senate ???????

I think this is a totally unacceptable activity, and a HUGE liability exposure.

If she fell off or got injured in ANY way, ( or broke a heel :P ) take a guess who would get sued?

Not only that, in that picture, it looks like they got an escort from the PD!

Their Chief probably would have never even found out, since it happened before his office hours start.

Seems to me like this is a very serious problem. The residents should be quite angry that their paid firemen are using their tax paid village apparatus to shuffle their significant others around in. I sasy paid, only because since whatever is left of the volunteers, do not drive the apparatus. This wouldnt fly for the police or EMS. Also seems like a serious liability should there be an accident. With all the tension in Larchmont over Volunteer / Paid in recent months, you think that they would have enough sense not to do anythign questionable and let everythign settle down.

Did any of you making comments actually see this happen? I highly dought it! Maybe its a disgruntled ex vol trying to start problems? Or just a CAREER(not paid)guy just being a moron. What ever the case maybe there should be a little more back up the a link to some dumb a** he said she said forum.

Hey LTNRFD, for a retired career officer you sure do sound like one of those bitter quitting vollies from Larchmont. Though you might be a little smarter than that

I think I don't know anything about it and its really none of my business. Perhaps something happened and they got permission to help out a family member of a BROTHER. As far as the let everything settle comment...I don't think they were the ones that kicked up the dust. And some PD's do offer transports in certain aspects if needed or good customer service. If not that is why they have a Chief to immediately handle the situation.

To stay on topic, which not one person has done, I would think my Chief would ask the Officer of the rig if this was in fact true,

and since I'm sure this isn't true, the Officer would say "No, it isn't". Then the Chief would probably tell him to make sure this doesn't happen,

to which the Officer would say "Yes Sir."

Now, to go off topic, to all here with whatever stupid comments you want to make or whether you find it "totally unacceptable", I say mind your business.

Worry about yourselves and your own departments, and don't worry about what Larchmont does.

There's no proof to this accusation or story......

...and Jack10562, I'm sure the pic with the "Police escort" is just a generic pic, not from the actual incident itself.....

Answer the question ("What would your Chief say....") instead of sounding like a bunch of disgruntled vollies....

Who cares?

This is just some disgruntled citizen with no time/life/job and thus has nothing better to do than try to bait/corner/attack public servants. I bet he's a one of those anarchist scum bags who harass the NYPD and obstruct traffic all day on their bikes.

I had one moron come up to me in a parking lot and freak out on me for letting the ambulance idle. Told me i was breaking the law, wasting crucial fuel and polluting the environment....meanwhile i was just trying to hit the 711 to get a tuna wrap and a water before another job came in. They all come from the same fabric and all are nuts.

I don't have a chief so i can't speak to that.

This is something that we are facing in my town right now. (Not guys giving rides, but citizens involving themselves in what we do.) It is all about perception, and never in any other job have I felt the importance of having people who like the fire department in town government. There are truly people out there to get us, and they wave their holy banners high, asking the chief why we at the grocery store, why we stopped to get a movie. People have even asked why we sit on the bumper and drink coffee. Amazing.

But, when you break it down, these people are the taxpayers. They ARE paying our salaries. They paid for our trucks. Now, this doesn't mean I think we should cotow to their every desire, but you just have in the back of your mind that we are public servants and need to act accordingly. One of my chiefs calls it the front page test. Would what you're doing stand up to being on the front page?

As for what my chief would say...that would depend. He would likely remind us about 1) the SOG for riders on our rigs, 2) remind of us the SOG for use of apparatus (changed lately d/t fuel prices) and tell us not to let it happen again. Might get you some paper.

PLEASE lets not make another

CAREER FIREFIGHTER vs VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER bash.

We have had enough in the past and they have to END!

Again, why is bashing career guys allowed to continue unabated on EMTBravo? Remove this topic. Nothing positive is gonna come from it. We all think it was bad move to drop the lady off at the train station. Now move on.
