Disco tune "Stayin' Alive" could save your life

2 hours, 7 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. doctors have found the Bee Gees 1977 disco anthem "Stayin' Alive" provides an ideal beat to follow while performing chest compressions as part of CPR on a heart attack victim.

The American Heart Association calls for chest compressions to be given at a rate of 100 per minute in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). "Stayin' Alive" almost perfectly matches that, with 103 beats per minute.

I could only imagine playing this in front of family members while trying to save the life of a loved one.

Ever since I updated my ACLS I sing it in my head on every code. Too bad I don't have the 70's dance moves to back it up.

And on the contrary...

Is it ironic/sad that my EMT instructor taught us to think of "Another One Bites The Dust" to keep the 100bpm in mind.

Personally, I always liked Just Once by James Ingram

"I did my best But I guess my best wasn't good enough"

I did CPR with a certain Empress Paramedic to that song

playing in the bus and til this day we always have a good

laugh about it.

We did our best! :D

Nothing wrong with a little light music to break up the STRESS!

I am glad Another One Bites The Dust didn't come on. lol

At 1:17 into the video... watch what she does with the BVM and appreciate that she'll never have to assist you with respirations.

This is frightening to see that someone actually studied this. Valid or not, why would you even think to try?

Makes me cringe knowing that thousands of people saw the absolute wrong way of doing CPR and bagging someing

On the plus side... if civilians everywhere follow the example then all we'll have to do is run nice easy asystole codes. :)

Apparently the opening to the marine corps anthem will work as well.

I did CPR on a nun in Barnes and Noble with an animated snowman singing "Have a holly, jolly Christmas."

Can't recommend it.
