=D> =D> =D> Hats off to FF Bassitt!!! Hell of a job! As a 16-year-old junior firefighter he was brave enough to risk his a$$ and enter an obviously dangerous environment! That risk saved a 70-year-old mans life, way to go Jefferey!

Kudos to the BMFD on obviously training him well! Alot of people wouldn't go near something like that, but FF Bassitt did & without any sort of PPE i presume!

That article points out why it is good to have the direct line to your local FD/PD or even 60-Control in your cell phone!

And more kudos to the Junior FF, also!

(06/01/05) BRIARCLIFF MANOR - An Ossining High School student is being called a hero after saving an elderly man from a burning house Wednesday.

Jeffrey Bassett, 16, one of five members of his family on the Briarcliff Fire Department, was on his way to school when he spotted the fire around 8:30 a.m. He says he called 911, but realized the call went to a Rockland County control center. A neighbor then called 911, and fire units came to the scene.

Bassett says he didn’t wait for firefighters to respond to the house on Apple Lane. He says he went towards the garage and found 70-year-old Peter Tierney inside and carried him to safety.

Tierney is being kept under observation at Westchester Medical Center with second degree burns.

I heard mention of a report on CBS2 as well. Well done! Does the Fire service have the equivalent of an EMS "save"? If so, Jeff certainl does deserve one!

As long as it's submitted, this one will likely qualify as a recipient of Westchester County VFA Firefighter of the Year award. The form is avalible for download on the WCDES website.

We're looking into WC as well as Hudson Valley, FASNY, and the national organizations.

As for the interviews the rundown was:

Channel12 Video

ABC7 Video

UPN9 Video

WCBS Radio88

WINS 1010Radio

Didn't see WNBC4, WCBS2, WB11...

Good Morning America is interested in something next week.

I guess the movie rights are next... [-o<

Maybe even a reality TV show. We'll see if the Donald wants to foot the bill... :-k

Briarcliff Manor Volunteer Fire Department Junior Firefighter Jeffrey Bassett, 16, spotted a structure fire in progress at 135 Apple Lane, Briarcliff Manor, while on his way to Ossining High School this morning.

He called 911 on his cell phone.

Bassett is credited with rescuing a 70 year old resident from the burning house who was unable to escape the flames. The resident who sustained second degree burns and smoke inhalation was transported to the Westchester Medical Center Burn Unit for treatment and is expected to recover fully.

Firefighters arriving on location were confronted with heavy fire on the second floor, and were able to quickly extinguish the flames with assistance from neighboring Ossining and Croton Volunteer Fire Departments.

The one family building sustained heavy fire damage.
