No more photos right now, but over this weekend I will be posting a training event to be held at Empress focusing on Chemical Suicides. We will look at origin, trends, specific chemicals, emergency response, safety considerations, and possible treatment options. The training will incorporate a practical element for Empress SOD personnel and will be open for anyone that would like to attend. The classroom portion should last about 2 1/2 hours. PS - If you, or anyone has previously attended a course on Chemical Suicide please let me know what you thought your training may have been lacking. Any constructive comments are welcome.

I agree that the preservation of the history of Emergency Services in Westchester County is important. In 100 years the make up of the services that protect those who work live and travel in Westchester County will certainly be very different from what they are today and people will be interested in learning about and researching the organiztions and people who protected our communities in days past. However, instead of looking to start a new venture, we should be looking to existing resources.
There is already an organizton in Westchester County who's mission is to document and preserve the history of Westchester County. The Westchester County Historical Society founded in 1874 is a library and research center located in the county records center in Elmsford. They have an expansive collection of books, pamphlets, photographs, maps, newspapers, scrapbooks and manuscripts - and a good deal already on the history of firefighting in Westchester all of which are stored in a climate controled environment optimal for preevation. They have an excellent staff who are beyond knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about the preservation of all aspects of Westchester's History. Better still - they have a very easy to use reading room that is open to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
When I worked for WCHS I tried my best to grow the collection as it relates to the history of fire fighting in Westchester County. If you personaly or your department (fire, police or EMS) has any materials that they would like to see preserved in a location where the public can view them this is the place where you should looking. You can learn more about them by visiting their website http://www.westchesterhistory.com.
    That's my two cents worth.

Just a quick question, and I don't mean to get off topic too much, but if you are an EMS agency boss or training officer and would like to join Empress for some training events, please PM me. We could teach you something and you could teach us something. Please pass on the idea if you think its worth it, I DO!. As for Empress we would ensure CME's for most training and provide the equipment for any Decon. training etc. for the event. Don't forget ALL TRAINING IS GOOD TRAINING!!! Please let me know what you think.

As some ex-Empress EMS EMT's would say, including two members of this forum, "ALS is just a luxury, BLS is a neccesity".
I am a Paramedic, and know ALS interventions can save lives. BUT, as I was taught, BLS before ALS always. If you don't have strong BLS, then your ALS isn't going to matter.
I think the problem is, and has been for a while, is that some providers become "Flycar Dependent", and Paramedics don't help the situation by delegating tasks to let EMT's learn.
I think there are a lot of EMT's with good intentions, but have become too dependent on Paramedics for everything.

I am going to go with the area I live in The Town of Mt. Pleasant Fire Departments. I think they should consolidated Hawthorne, Thornwood and Valhalla down to 5 commissioners, 1 chief, 2 assistants with 2 Ladders (1 Tower and 1 straight stick) along with 1 Heavy Rescue and 3 engines out of a total of 3 stations. I would say that Hawthorne would be HQ (being centrally located) housing an engine and the Heavy Rescue with Thornwood housing station 2 with a ladder and an engine and Valhalla being station 3 housing another 1 and 1. I am in no way shape or form a person who has any knowledge in this subject and I am just throwing my thoughts out there in a hypothetical situation.
This would essentially eliminate 10 commissioners, 6 chiefs/ chief cars, 2 firehouses, 2 ladder trucks, 1 heavy rescue, 2 engines and 1 rescue engine if my math is correct.
***Again this was only me doing this for fun and not anything else***

As one of the HPN firefighters, I can definitely agree that our disaster drills are, well, disasters. But on the other hand without recurrent training holding these exercises we wouldn't be able to do the job when the time comes. Throughout this thread I've seen a lot of department bashing and extreme opinions. Yes, kudos to the FDNY and the awesome job they did. And, Yes, I'm sure many agencies are thoroughly ready enough to be able to handle at least an initial response to such a disaster. But let's face reality: No one is perfect, and no emergency service is perfect. For the people who boast how "awesome" their departments are, I have two words...KEEP TRAINING! It's the only way you'll ever be ready.

How about (just some random thoughts)...
    - evacuation plans?
    - staffing plans?
    - continuity of operations plans?
    - dealing with concerns about family members (where will the families of the responders be/how will they be taken care of)?
    - equipment/infrastructure failure?
    - communications failure?
    - multiple simultaneous responses?
    - multiple simultaneous large scale responses?
    - mass fatalities?
    - mass casualties?
    - unavailability of traditional mutual aid?
    ...to name a few.
Is your agency prepared now to respond to a "super MCI"? If the answer's no, there's certainly room to plan!!!

  18. ems-buff liked a post in a topic by JohnnyOV in Water Rescues - Is your department trained?
After the last storm over the weekend, and with the impending storm coming over the next few days I got to wondering, how does your department train for water rescues in our area? I heard numerous departments go out for rescues over sunday night and monday morning and never call for a water rescue team. If you've trained to NFPA 1006 and 1670 and are proficient in technical rescues, then obviously this does not apply to you.
Water rescues are an extremely high hazard, with a very low probability of occurrence. They are one of the most dangerous aspects of our job, and one that most of the fire service, unless properly trained in, have very little knowledge and experience in. I know off the top of my head that Elmsford and Yorktown have water rescue teams who are established and train for these types of scenarios on a regular basis. These are highly technical scenes, and just like a high angle rescue, entering a structure fire, or other technical scenarios, should only be preformed by trained personnel.
As an example, yesterday a department was dispatched to a water rescue. The medics, who arrived on scene moments before the water rescue team did, wanted to drive their Fly Car out to the victim, who was on the hood of his car which was submerged in water, pick him up, and reverse back to dry land. Yes, this idea actually occured, however the IC put a stop to it and sent the water rescue team in to retrieve the victim.
Ideas like this are bound to get an emergency service worker injured or killed at an incident like this. NIOSH, just released a report about a volunteer who was wearing the wrong PPE at a water rescue and subsequently was swept away in frigged water, drowned, and was found 4 days later down stream. ( http://www.firefight...y/newsid/130974) There are numerous resources around the county which can assist you at your incident and do so without endangering the lives of untrained firefighters. Your best best is to call them out on dispatch, and turn them around if you really do not need them.

I have something that is worth posting here and is something I want all of you to read and really think about. This was forwarded to me by a friend. This was written by Meriden, CT, Battalion Chief Burdick.
These are words that I whole heartily beleive in and held true in my profession being a firefighter, from the time I started volunteering my service to my present career in the fire services. Next time when you use the term "Brotherhood" stop and think about it for a second and ask yourself how you use the term, live up to your actions, consider your self part of the Brotherhood. I see the term used often here, but are you truly in the brotherhood?
    Just think.

I agree with you. Except, members not trained in patient care should be on scene if their goal is to become trained in patient care. We have a to of Trainees all of whom are expected and encouraged to become EMT within 3 years latest of becoming Trainees. It is so important for future EMT/Medics to get experience prior to starting EMT class.
