  1. Base Scanners come with cheap antennas that mount on the back of the scanner, and for listening to low band, are kind of useless. Portable scanners come with a "rubber ducky" antenna designed for that radio, and are genrally OK.
  2. Base: http://www.scannermaster.com/store/01-500826 Portable: http://www.scannermaster.com/store/01-500827.html And Make Sure You Get A Good Antenna Setup, Without It, Even The Best Scanner Is Useless. Both these scanners are compatible with trunking, which will be helpful if the county's new radio system is Motorola and trunks.

  4. I dont think Mohegan has too many Ladders, considering the size of their district and how they user their Ladders (First Due Structural Piece) From what I understand, the main reason for the purchase of there latest ladder (35) was due to the growing size of the district that warrented a 100' ladder. Ladders aren't just for hi-rise buildings. Mohegan has many resedential, commercial, and industrial occupancies that do warrant a ladder. For example, Jefferson Valley Mall, "Cardiac Village", Hudson Valley Hospital, Cortlandt Town Center, Lakeland High School, many condo complexes, taxpayers, etc. Mohegan only has two real ladders that also can act as engines.....Ladder 10, a 75 ft, and Ladder 35, a 100'.....Engine 250 is a 50' Telesquirt, which is mainly useful for elevated master streams.

  6. I don't know about SOG/SOP's but I feel this procedure should be common knowledge for every firefighter. Even with the new buddy-breath systems..you should always have a backup.
  7. Does every department/district need a aerial truck? No Does every department/district need a vehicle that carries a full complement of truck company equipment and ground ladders? Yes. (What happened to the good-old quad?) Does every department/district need an aerial truck within a reasonable distance? Yes. Truck companies are a neccesity at every structural fire. That doesn't mean they need to have a big stick on top. They do need to have ground ladders, truck company tools, AND truck company training. Also, I feel alot of people are forgetting the art of ground ladders, and are relying too much on aerials.
  8. Oh yeah, my FD has ALS-EMS, 2 PL Custom Type 1 Crusdaers and 1 Ford/Oddyssey ESU type support vehicle.

  11. SOP's need to be followed, it's unsafe to have engines racing to the scene to NOT be FAST. 60's CAD has geographical capabilties, the 3 closest engines to the incident should be the engine companies, the fourth closest the FAST. The officer on the incoming unit should call the IC on the tactical freq to request placement and instructions, thats providing the IC is able to answer you. If not, go to preplans and SOP's, something an MDT system would make that kind of information easy to reference
  12. The canopy style hose bed covers, like on some of the old FDNY rigs, were a product of the "war years" of the '60's and '70's, and were used to keep debris thrown by people at the engines out of the hosebeds. The only reason I see for hosebed covers today, although not a neccesity, is to keep snow/ice and leaves/dirt out of the hosebed.

  19. Ideally, IMO (In My Opinion) the first due engine should have short-wheelbase Air conditioning and heat that you can actually feel 1750gpm Hale (even 1750 is pushing it, anything above that is a waste of money) 750 gal (car fires, plus with todays tank configurations 750 cant hurt that much, except the added weight) pump panel with a logical layout, and NO intakes or discharges near pump panel conviently located discharges and intakes Jake Brake easy accesible PM/daily check items Seating for six people, with engine co tools accesible from the cab Above adequate scene lighting, including a "brow light" TIC- Should be a truck company tool Enough spare bottles to change everybody once front bumper trash line ACCESSSIBLE hosebed and crosslays Thats all i can think of right now

  21. I like this one, This is my kind of truck : Feature Pic on Main Page (near the bottom) , Hackensack NJ New Pierce Dash 105 RM http://www.fdnytrucks.com/ This is the type of truck I wish we had more of in this county.
  22. From www.nyjournalnews.com Good luck guys. I don't see what NWP citizens problems are, You guys sacrifice enough for these people without having to sacrifice even more. If Armonk, also in North Castle, can get that fully loaded new firehouse, then it is ridiculous that you have to cut showers, excercise, and other features out, feratures that are becoming standards for most modern firehouses. It seems like these people want fire department when they need them but dont want to pay anything for it, something, along with the "not in my backyard " syndrome, that is becoming commonly detrimental to FD's and EMS in Westchester.
  23. I heard Pleasantville FD is getting a couple of new Seagraves, anybody got some info on this?
  24. I don't beleive it was anything big.
