Subterranean vats were an emergency response to the city being repeatedly and savagely burned to the ground.

But it’s what lies beneath these curious road-tattoos that’s really interesting. Embedded in the earth are colossal cisterns that hold sometimes substantial artificial lakes. Are these lightless pools meant for the swimming pleasure of C.H.U.D.s? In reality, they’re a physical reminder that San Francisco historically has been a tinderbox, and it’s always good to have extra water lying around in case of a nasty fire.

  2. I'm going to  play Facebook Fireman. Indulge me if you will.

After watching the video(s) of this fire, in the video below, it leaves me wondering. It's a stereotypical raised ranch. It was well involved upon arrival and self venting, as you can see.  Why not hit the fire from the outside and knock it back a bit with a 2 1/2 line from outside?  Make it more manageable to make entry (which I also question when it's confirmed all occupants are out. As a result, a firefighter fell through stairs and had to be transported to the hospital. It also looks like they could have made a rapid attack into the garages which looked like they were cooking. The fire keeps cooking, but I still don't see any water being placed on the fire until the structure is completely gone, all I see is them allowing more oxygen to enter the structure.

Here's the video by JTC Fire Photography, he got really good shots of this fire. The video is below, pictures can be viewed by clicking this link.

  3. Definitely interesting, especially with the tandem axle on the Ford F550. Never seen something like that before.

MONROE, N.C. (April 26, 2017) – In response to customers’ requests for a more automated, simpler way to manage Air-Pak® data, Scott Safety today announced the launch of its Scott Connect Monitor software solution. Monitor is an easy-to-understand air management solution designed to put critical, real-time responder SCBA data at incident command’s fingertips.

Leveraging Scott Safety’s patented SEMS II personnel accountability system, Monitor allows the incident commander or team leader to see air level, PASS, and EVAC data on a user-friendly dashboard. Users can toggle between two displays, allowing them to view the Air-Pak data of their entire team or only be alerted if something is wrong. And since Scott Connect Monitor utilizes SEMS II data, it is compatible with any Air-Pak X3, Air-Pak 75, or Air-Pak NxG7 equipped with SEMS II consoles.

“Software on a fire scene should be intuitive, reliable, and complement incident command’s SOGs without requiring a lot of overhead,” said John Dinning, associate director of firefighter solutions for Scott Safety. “The beauty of Monitor lies in its simplicity. SCBA data automatically connects to the Monitor solution and immediately notifies of critical alerts, augmenting commands control over the incident.”

The safety of the firefighter is top priority, and reliable, real-time SCBA and PASS data is crucial in providing the highest levels of safety in these dangerous environments. With Scott Connect Monitor, command will have all the data at their fingertips.

Is it that they do not want to use greenburgh services or do they want the ability to have greater control of zoning laws in their area?

Zoning and development, and property tax assessments are two of the main factors driving this issue. For example, the town recently reassessed all the properties in the town for the first time in 60 years, resulting in a significant spike in property taxes for Edgemont residents. They believe they fund more then their share of the town budget, yet have less say in what goes on in Edgemont. There are also concerns about several apartment complexes being planned and are concerned about renters in the community.

The cost and delivery of services currently provided by the Town Of Greenburgh are also an issue, as they believe they would be better served at a lower cost by establishing their own departments. They do think the town and other municipalities are obligated to provide services to them for free or at a significantly reduced cost, or in the same manner as the other villages.

  6. Ferrara got their aerials from Smeal, which was recently acquired by Spartan ERV.

Now that they are part of the REV Group, I wonder if KME or E-One will produce the aerials for them.

Also, through KME and Ferrara, the REV Group now has the contract for FDNY Engines and Rearmount Trucks.  It's also interesting to note, KME and Ferrara have been the #1 and #2 bidder on several FDNY apparatus contracts over the past couple of years.

  7. I've been meaning to post about this for a while. Had it written, just had to hit submit. For those that aren't aware, there is something to watch in Greenburgh.

Edgemont, the unincorporated section of town that Edgemont School District and Greenville Fire District covers, is trying to incorporate as Greenburgh's 7th village. There's actually a strong chance it may happen. A large part of the residential taxpayer base is wealthy, and are not so much worried about the taxes as they are with the control over what goes on in their section of the town, such as developments.

Edgemont makes up 25% or more of the Greenburgh tax base, and is definitely the wealthiest section of town, with numerous million dollar homes. The population is roughly 8,000 in a dense 2.5 square mile district with a large commercial district (the ."Scarsdale" portion of Central Ave), along with large single family residential dwellings, apartment buildings, schools, and the Sprain Brook Parkway.

From the public safety viewpoint.....If Edgemont becomes a village, they need to create a police department or contract with one.  What could this mean for Greenburgh PD and their funding? As Greenburgh PD also provides EMS, Edgemont would also have to find an EMS provider.

From the firematic end, that portion of town is covered entirely by Greenville Fire District.  If Edgemont becomes a village, fire protection falls under the Village Manager, so it would become a fire department under the village. What could happen to Greenville Fire District?

They may be able to contract with Greenburgh and Greenville, but those who are leading this movement are so bitter about the Town that contracting with Greenburgh based services may not be an option.

Seth - Is this an OSHKOSH Chassis? If so, yes, this is indeed a CLASSIC that the City of White Plains should keep as part of their DPW History (Gee, I remember those 1960's Yonkers DPW Grey OSHKOSH Plow and Sanitation Trucks)

1958 Oshkosh W-Series  All-Wheel Drive. Probably had a Hercules motor.  The trucks were some of the most popular, toughest beasts ever built, workhorses in the mid-1900's, and often worked for decades in multiple different heavy duty type uses, building and maintaining this country. They were worked until they were dead, picked for parts, or rotted away. Very few remain.

I think this may have been a project by former DPW Commissioner Bud Nicoletti. I know he drove it in a few parades.

I'd love to see photos of the Yonkers trucks or any of these model and era of trucks that served the municipalities of Westchester.

    Seth,

I was out at Pierce this past week.....

@x152 thanks for the scoop and photos! Much appreciated. All very cool rigs!  It's going to be interesting to see how the Ascendant line is developed more.

I really like that Jersey City Enforcer, and that Ascendant seems to be set up nicely. Miami looks very traditional and classy, and that blacked out ladder truck is very unique and sharp.

  10. What a crime that White Plains (NY) DPW is selling this! It's in great condition, and doesn't require much attention aside from being garaged and routine maintenance from what I understand. A great public relations tool that should have been held on to! The opportunity to own this piece of history is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I hope it's not because no one took pride or care if it. Now, this very well may end up at Brookfield being torn apart for scrap.

  14. I think the more important thing is....will it carry on Hartsdale's solid all lime green paint job (My preference), or will a solid red paint job win out?

I'm told Hartsdale committee members were checking out this rig amongst others at the Long Island show.  This truck is owned by Atlantic Hook And Ladder of Port Washington FD. It's a 2016 Spartan ERV 93', the model Hartsdale is going with.

    All,
A Firefighter from Ladder 135 fell from the roof of a multi-family home in Queens while battling two-alarm fire earlier this afternoon. The NY Daily News is reporting this to be an LODD.
The FDNY says the fire broke out in a multi-family dwelling on Putnam Avenue in Ridgewood on Thursday afternoon. Reports are that the Firefighter was gravely injured after attempting to get into a tower ladder bucket from the roof and then falling 5 stories. We will have much more. Prayers to everyone involved.
Take Care. Be Careful. Pass it On.
