Congratulations. New EMT's deserve a point. It's only the beginning. Certification is the piece of paper that lets you turn lessons into a craft. Never stop learning and never stop asking questions. Keep an open heart and an open mind. Best wishes on the beginning of a spectacular experience. Make us proud.

I find that rarely do you hear us advising an expedite of FD units. Occasionally an expedite for ALS. But more common to hear an expidite for other agencies: PD, DPW, ConEd & Water dept. As previously mentioned that common expidite is not to have them drive faster, but to dispatch on a priority level.
We do commonly hear on EMS calls; PD requests an expedite. Funny most of the time, when thats requested our ETA is less than a minute.

You might want to listen to the audio, but it'll probably get your blood to boiling. The ignorance factor comes into play with the woman doing the filming in a big way. Then you start to hear people yelling "where's the water?!" a few minutes in. I read on another site that there were problems gaining entry into the fire apartment, so getting water flowing from the interior became a problem. The guy yelling "where's the f-in water man", probably was the dumb a** that lit his apt up!
On another note, can anybody tell me why (Kujo?) the west coast fire departments are so in love with wooden ground ladders still?

    This is a good topic!
    JFLYNN - excellent!
I'm not a career firefighter, but in the volunteer world I live in, I can tell you the difference between the "Senior Man" and the "Life Member."
The SM is a guy who has been around long enough to be trusted with just about any task. They unknowingly guide and lead younger guys at calls and drills. They'll give up the knob so someone with less time can get it. They'll show up to drills and offer to help with the evolutions, run the pump or put the aerial up and show others how to fly it. They're still coming to meeting nights and keeping quiet, only speaking up when the younger guys are missing the point or the older Life Members need a reality check. They quietly go with the flow, and have the respect for the Officers and Chiefs to tell them in private when they made a mistake or did a good job. They never seem to disrespect anyone of rank in front of younger, more impressionable members. They still get up at 2AM and man the Engine for a CO call when the younger guys feel they're too good to get out of bed for it.
Most importantly, in the volunteer world that I know, the best Senior Men always remember how it was, how it is, and how it will be. They respect those that were there before them and hold on to the good traditions, yet they don't put up a fuss when you change SOPs or mandate training because it will mean a safer tomorrow for everyone.
Nothing can replace the guidance of your Senior Man.
As for a "Life Member" vs. a "Senior Man," these are usually guys that "put their time in," and constantly remind you that "I don't have to do that anymore," and can always be found at the firehouse talking to others of "their kind" because the real players in the firehouse are usually out in the Engine Room checking the equipment or at the drill.
I will always feel priviledged to have grown up in a firehouse and a family with so many "Senior Men" who have mentored me and so many others into the members we are today. Their guidance and advice isn't just limited to the firehouse - it helps you in life altogether. These guys (in many cases whom have left this earth) had the sincerity, humbleness and pride that you just can't get out of most people today.
Don't take them for granted, because the day they're gone a piece of your firehouse is gone!

  20. shadow12083 liked a post in a topic by 38ff in The Liabilities Of Being A Fire Commisioner
I am a commissioner and FF in my district. The duties of a Commissioner are many. As long as you do the right thing (dont approve chief officers that have no business being cheif officers, dont steal taxpayer money, dont get stupid with the money, and run legal stuff by your district lawyer) you cant really be held personally accountable for something as far being personally sued. There is a book thats put out by a lawfirm that is a basic "how to run a district". Follow it, and your golden. It costs about $100 or so, but it answers TONS of questions that pop up as to what to do in certain situations, how to exectue your duties, what those duties are, ect. It's a 3 inch think binder thats worth it's weight in gold.
As a commissioner, you have a much more direct impact on your dept as far as it's overall running. What equipment to buy, what SOP's to make/change, etc.
As a FF, I got tired of "thats how it is, and it will probably stay that way". So I ran for the board, got elected, (voter turnout was over 400 people) and am having a positive impact on my dept with suggesting new equipment, making suggestions, and general management of the district.
When you get elected, you have to attend a days worth of training that gives you the basics of what you need to do. Listen and you'll be on the right path.
It's a good thing, if you want to do it, make sure you get your letter and/or petition in soon to get put on the ballot.
  21. shadow12083 liked a post in a topic by ex-commish in The Liabilities Of Being A Fire Commisioner
I am not a commissioner nor was I ever one but I am a former chief who had to work with a board of fire commissioners. First I suggest you maintain your integrity and don't let the position go to your head. Your are a public official with alot of responsiblity and are there to serve the public and not your own political or personal agendas. Read and understand section 176 under town law which explains the duties of fire commissioners. Listen, respect, and work with your fire chiefs and don't interfere with thier duties especially on the fireground. Don't adopt policies or sop's behind thier backs or buy equipment without thier input. Include them with all of your ideas.
You will also have to vote on things like hiring people ( if in a career dept) or vendors to preform to services for the district. You will also have to vote on appointments of fire chiefs and do so knowing this is truly the right person for the job, not just the "allright guy". Probalby the most important item is the budget and buying equipment. Don't buy equipment because it looks cool or the next department has one. Buy stuff that is practical. Remember you are spending taxpayers money.
Like any other elected official you will have to make decisions that may not be popular. Dont be swayed or play the fence. I have seen this happen. Stick to your convictions and do what is right. How you vote could impact your department for years. Treat all members fairly and dont play favorites.
