Police officers should be at least CFR. Most times the police are first on location so some ems training can't hurt,I bet if it was a LAPD officer shot thing would have been different ? Not saying the cop on location did nothing, but a TSA officer is not a cop.
I wonder if perhaps the PD deemed the scene safe and the FD refused to approach until the actor was taken into custody out of an abundance of something etc?
Many dept's won't attach outside TEMS personnel to a tactical unit for physical and legal liability reasons. I don't blame them one bit.
Tragedy that the TSA personnel was killed but I am sure the plan was for many more to die...

. My wife called me a few minutes later to ask whats going on as "1 of the cop cars was doing 70mph as it passed my home". she said all 4 tires were off the ground as it cleared the crest of the hill.
bwahahahaha-- I just had this silly cartoon like vision of your wife standing on your front lawn with a radar gun...Bnechis likes this -
Allot of the mutant disputes were always silly disputes to varying degrees'. Many of them would address you as "Your Honor" as in 'Your Honor these ain't my pants-these are my cousin's pants-I ain't know he had that Glock in them!! ' ( I am watering the conversation down for the outsiders). So these calls took for ever on occasion. Usually b/c you didn't have a ticket book with you for them to put their right hand on. In order to swear them in of course. You always wanted to make sure they were telling the truth under oath. As did they. Even if it was in the middle of junk strewn lot etc. And they had to swear that they would adhere to your direction when you settled the dispute. Like they say--If God made a better job he kept it for him self...

Little off track but..A very long time ago we were sent to a job taken via Vietnamese/ATT translator. Elderly man states he was at a birthday party and everyone was covered in Nalpam. First thing you think, yeah ok, caller is EDP/IP right? Well we arrived to find people running all over covered in Napalm. Go figure...When it started to rain they placed all of the Sterno's from the food trays, while lit, on one table. Then they picked the table up, over a bunch of kids/women playing on the ground, to bring the food inside. The sterno's slid off the table & voila-everyone covered in Naplam. In his eyes of course that was the best way to describe the event. Even though it sounded like he was just reminiscing...

Even though he may have been 'emotionally disturbed' up to that point in time. I'll assume he knew right from wrong. As soon as he pointed that weapon at the P.O./Trooper he became a common criminal. And was rightfully dispatched.

A seasoned cop will stay upwind. A seasoned FF or EMT will remained staged until the PD advises differently, even if they see a pt being loaded into a bus. I'm not getting payed to smell like smoke for the next month or become another rescue in a fire. And the FF/EMT isn't getting payed a stipend per pt. (maybe some are for all I know) As a FF/EMT if you are told to stage in a safe location until the PD renders it safe, what's the big deal-it's for a reason. If you choose to enter that location for an EDP perhaps and you wind up getting hurt or even worse, hurting someone. You may wind up having much answering to do. Either criminal or civil. I know way too many guys that wished they would have followed protocol or used their head. I hate to say it, but its us verse them/it, not each other. stay safe

"U.S. culture has a lot to do with it and policymakers need to take action right away to reverse the trend, the experts who wrote the report advised. Its practically a commercial for socialism and more gov't intrusion in our lives."
I think we can see where this is aimed-socialism with a liberal agenda. The 'policy makers' need to the exact opposite...

Most products any of us would look for are made in the USA and usually less expensive-like 10570 said just take a look-just a sample http://www.americansworking.com/webstores.html

This takes a concerted effort for Fire/EMS and LE to sit down and discuss roles, responsibilities and risks. This is a classic risk/benefit analysis: The risk is putting personnel in danger of being shot, the reward is saving the lives of children. Remember we as Fire/EMS personnel assume a higher level of risk when we take these jobs.
In theory that's very romantic. However the reality is that it is still an 'Active Shooter' situation and will be treated as such by law enforcement for a multitude of reasons. Sadly liability is what worries most at the upper part of the food chain. It is an explosive, emotional, dynamic and tenuous situation at best. It would be great to have EMS follow up the six as rooms/buildings are cleared, until a sleeper etc. shoots an EMT in the head while he/she is treating a patient in a hot zone. Then the order of the day will be 'How could the cops let EMS into an active shooter scene-what were they thinking?' It's not an insult to the victims or malfeasance by EMS that they be required to 'stage' until the 'all clear' is given. Being part of the same family, it would needlessly, make me give pause to rendering assistance to YOU, if wounded, rather than dealing with the threat(s) causing additional victims. These active shooter situations can be trained for and drilled over and over, with all the manpower that can be mustered on the day of the drill-to perfection. In reality if and when it does happen you will probably be at minimum manpower, with a one-thousand foot ceiling quashing medevac and half your transport equipment will be OOS. Active shooter situations are nasty, nasty business that can be summed up by saying they are more about what you shouldn't do rather than what you should have done and in the worst of circumstances. Each situation is unique and we all must stay fluid in addressing them in each encounter.

Why is it "plain silly and dangerous"?
Uhhhhmm, they do.
As was mentioned earlier in the discussion, this station's primary response area is a large amount of an interstate, has an ambulance assigned to it and the unit in question is to be a secondary option for transporting patients.
If they did staff it correctly they wouldn't need a Fireblance. Ya Know what pal...your right I am wrong stay safe....

Thats pretty funny. It even has an air-dam on top of the cab next to the 'Broward County Sheriff' graphics. Bottom line is that its just plane silly and dangerous. Staff an engine and an ambulance 24/7 like they should be as well as the manpower and resources needed for coverage.

SEATOW.... and just strictly as a informative question, why is the Hudson river, the only area in the country that is not covered by them, and the only area I know of that sends FD and PD units out for non-emergency type recoveries (stalled engines, mechanical problems etc)?
SeaTow will usually respond out of the Highlands in NJ for a handsome fee and an extended response time. Because of the volume of commercial vessels/pleasure craft it's important to get a marine unit out to render assistance asap to make an assesment before it very quickly becomes an emergency.

I'm merely playing Devils Advocate here, but...
2) I don't understand why an Automatic Fire Alarm requires the response of 3 Engines, a Ladder, a Rescue, 3 Chiefs Cars, and 12 POV's? I would assume the same reason why an emergency call on the Hudson invokes a response from several agencies.
You read my mind....

That hits the F%$# nail on the head. I am not a terrorist. I spent my time on the Pile, and luckily, so far, have only had minor problems (PTSD, and sinus problems) compared to what some of my co-workers are going through. I am really getting disgusted with the way our government is acting. I really am beginning to believe it is time for a Second American Revolution. No more Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Tea Party, but we the voters need to look at what the candidates are about. Elect only those that put country above all else. No more multiple term members, if we can have term limits on the President, then we should have them on Congress as well. Eliminate their pensions and life time health benefits for serving just one term. The current government (not just Obama, but his predecessors, Bush(s) Clinton, etc.) have given away money like crazy, and never once checked the recipients like this. Why start now?
Well said...@ Grumpyff

Clearly this should have been handled by Law Enforcement and not the FD. A periemeter should have been set up along with ESU and a Hostage/Crisis Negotiator called in to open a dialogue with the E.D.F. (Emotinally Disturbed Feline).

On 25 December, 2005 @ 2010 hrs.the J.C.P.D.-E.S.U. lost two of the finest gentleman to ever wear the uniform. This Christmas was the fifth aniversary of their deaths. On the night in question P.O. Carson and P.O. Nguyen responded to the Kearny, N.J. side of the Lincoln Highway Bridge on a foggy, rainny night to assist at an MVA. Unknown to them the bridge tender raised the bridge to allow a boat to pass. At the time all the warning systems on the bridge were in disrepair so they had no warning that the bridge had been raised and after dropping off a box of flares to the radio car handling the call they went on to resume patrol and met their demise driving off the open bridge span. Within twenty minutes NYPD ESU and the NYPD Scuba Team as well as FDNY Rescue traveled into NJ to assist our divers in locating Rob and Shawn-we could never thank them enough for their professionalism and asistance. P.O.Carson was located immediately but P.O.Nguyen was recovered several days later. The notation at the Law Enforcemnet memorial couldn't be more accurate. "Its not how they died that made them heroes...its how they lived."

I don't think it was "writing on the wall". I think it was guys who could get out and potentially save the jobs of younger guys and that's a stand up thing to do!
Newark was cutting positions anyway. Either way it would have resulted in the closure of companies. Except now the City can blame the "evil" union and "greedy" firefighters for the closures instead of themselves because it was retirements not layoffs.
Newark and Jersey City are virtually side by side in real estate and how they conduct business. When we were going through arbitration it was the same law firm that represented both cities. So all the paralegal had to do was insert the appropriate city accordingly. Sometimes they did forget to change the City name and we did get a kick out of the in competence. They are all trying to take a page out of Gov Chris Christie's book in the bastardizing(sp?) of the union's especially the teachers Union (NJEA) here in NJ. But the Police & to some extent the fire are have a higher profile so we get the brunt of their finger waving. We just ran our first protest. Watch the media, watch youtube if you think any of the stuff we have done so far is good...all I can say is you haven't seen anything yet. We are at a 30 Year low of 833 Police Officers & Supervisors and they want to lay of 118 and demot 20 or so. Much more than half are either serving in the military or did 2 and 3 tours over there and are just rec"vng there DD-14's. Only to come home to a pink slip. We hired a forensic accountant, one of the best so we know where the money is and many guys have retired as a gesture of goodwill. But the problem is this in a nutshell.....ready? The politicians couldn't care less about you and your family even if you had to seek refuge under a railroad bridge. You have to know the secrets or be able to litigate them.

That's Ladder 3 Engine 7 Battalion 3 house up there on Summit ave very impressive firehouse with drive through bays I wonder if ladder 3 will be nicknamed "Rollin Thunder"III
Oddly enough that structure was designed for E.S.U. circa 1990 by E.S.U. supervisors and the city architect and engineers. But apparently the FD had a problem with one of their houses at the time that couldn't be repaired so it went to them by default. In hindsight we are kinda glad we didn't get it because of the geographical location. But it is a very nice building with a media room and rooms for training.
