Got an email this afternoon saying interviews will be given on jan 14th and 15th. I do not know how quick of a process it is but seems to be moving faster than a snails pace at this point in time. Anybody else get there packet and or interview date?

In effort to move this forum back towards discussing actual firefighting stuff...
What hose loads are on your apparatus for attack/supply? What's the rationale behind them?
Rescue Engine 827 (Morningside, MD) - Has a 500 gallon tank
    Crosslays:
    (2) 200' 1 3/4" preconnected attack lines with TSM-20 fog nozzles (wrapped), packed as a minuteman load. One off the Driver's side, one off the Officer's. Each section is 100'. (1) 250' 2" preconnected attack line with a smooth bore stacked tip nozzle (wrapped), packed as a minute man load. Runs off the Officer's side. Nozzle section is 100', backup section is 150'. Bumper Trash Line:
100' of 1.5" preconnected line with a TSM-10 fog nozzle. First 50' are rolled, last 50' are folded with ears out for quick deployment. (This is sometimes falsely referred to as the Kentland load, but a ton of companies down here use it) Off the rear:
1600' of 3" supply line. Last 50' set up as a "Layout Pack": Accordion folded with a 2.5" double-male, 2.5" female to 1.5" male reducer, and a 1.5" blind cap. That pack is wrapped with a halyard rope that also has a hydrant wrench. Layout man pulls this and typically drops it at the hydrant or the entrance to the complex. The reducers allow us to extend attack lines into the courtyards of garden apartment complexes or into large commercial occupancies if we are not using it as a supply line. 200' of 2.5 packed as a minuteman load with a gated wye, to two 1.5" threads. Each section is 100'. An alternate solution that allows us to extend attack lines if the layout pack is used for supply. 400' 1 3/4" preconnected attack line with TSM-20 fog nozzle (wrapped), packed in three sections. First section is 100', second section is 150', third section is 150'. Lineman shoulders the first section, Backup shoulders the second and pulls the third, dumping it onto the ground. Backup then grabs a coupling from the third (aka the Dump) section and moves with it. Standpipe Racks:
100' of 1 3/4" attack line with TSM-20 fog nozzle 100' of 1 3/4" attack line with smooth bore nozzle. "Officer's Pack:" Short shot of 2.5" hose with a gated wye and 50" of 1 3/4" attack line

Well guys after 43 years as a Port Chester Firefighter [ 18 years very active volunteer working at DPW then getting the dream job getting paid to do what I love to do this is my last day. It didn't end the way I wanted it too but away I go . I was fortunate to catch the war years when we went out every day for a job worked side by side with many dept.'s and made a lot of life long friends on mutual aid. I saw a lot of death and sorrow [ Gulliver's 24 DOA Stouffer's 26 DOA 9/11 world trade center ] and saved a few along the way but my greatest call was closing a large window [ life savers building ] for a 84 year old lady who was freezing because her window was open and she needed help. The next day she baked a apple pie for me and my partner. So I say good bye to it all and hope that I left a small mark somewhere. To my 2 sons that are following or trying to follow in my foot step's keep up the good work in this most rewarding profession . Good luck to the guy's that are left on my job and hope that thing's get better for you and the people we were sworn to protect.

If you're smart, a little buffy and into the job, please take this if it comes to you. A great dispatcher is invaluable to us in the field and we need more.

Obviously, this guy, along with everyone else in the US, has a right to their own opinion. And I will agree with his original thesis statement, which is that fire men, and emergency services in general shouldn't be regarded as heroes. I could be wrong, but all most everyone I know would say "I'm not a hero". After the thesis statement though, it quickly becomes an opinion piece, either that or he doesn't understand the evidence he's looking at. Yes, the Holland FD only has working fires at 3.8 percent of their calls, but he claims the 3.8 percent actually represents suspected fire too (that total is actually 20.7 percent). He then goes on to the FDNY. Yes they've received a lot more money in terms of funding, but alot of that has gone towards terrorism preparedness and future natural disasters, such as another hurricane sandy. Also, does he realize that the FDNY dropped a firefighter off every engine company? In my opinion, this professor is one of those people who think that if they're not fighting fires, firefighters are sitting around eating lunch and playing checkers, which as we all know is untrue. Also, it may seem that emergency services get paid alot, even though we aren't actively working at emergencies all that much, but as a professor of mine put it "emergency services don't get paid for what they do do, they get paid for what they may have to do."

It was a tough old 3 story building and one FAST was "activated" when a pass alarm malfunctioned on the third floor area (would not shut off until batteries were removed) thankfully the FF was okay..the truck work was unbelievable due to the masonry construction inside and outside of the building...fire was in the walls and ceilings on all three floors and up to 5 layers of plaster, old tough wire lath, masonite sheets and plywood over plaster on walls "renovated" over time..ate saw blades/chains...many doors were difficult to open with irons with heavy inside smoke banked down to lower levels but no visible fire until roof was vented ..making a lot of truckie work...and some reported smelling smoke for hours prior to dispatch...tough job...but good job by all on scene... so multiple FAST teams are "angels on our shoulders" with so much going on..good call if you ask me...

I was not the IC but the first two FASteams were put to work. Bedford Hills was requested for a cascade ( not a FASTeam)because Briarcliffs needed to refill during the incident and the county's filling system was O.O.S

Just so you know, the rig it replaced is not seen in those photos. The engine next to it is new and still in service. Just wanted to clear things up.
