Maybe when the career departments acknowledge the volunteer departments as the farm teams and use the farm teams to feed the system. Go to the "farm teams" and mold them and shape them to the standard the career departments set as the standard. Do this instead of putting people and departments down.
To paraphrase a saying in baseball, " you offer to train them and they will come"
The career departments should be the mentors and the leaders to raise the standard in Westchester.

It is the Town of Broome Volunteer Fire Department in Livingstonville, NY. I will do a write up of it and post some pics in a day or two.

Since this is my first day of retirement after 20 years @ 60 let me tell you our protocols. EMS dispatch: no answer dispatch again 3 min later. No answer after 2 more min. dispatch again and dispatch mutual aid. Fire: after initial dispatch if no answer after 5 min. dispatch again. If no answer (and it has happened) dispatch again and dispatch mutual aid. Mutual aid run cards have been set up by both ems and fire agencies for their districts. Barry I understand what your saying if dept. x crashes, but what if I don't send anybody to the call in a TIMELY manor! The cad prompts us on all re-dispatchs. The buck does not stop @ 60 Control. It is up to each department whether volunteer or career to cover your calls. The cad will prompt us for the city of New Rochelle or Bedford EMS in the same manor. We run with NYS DOH protocols for ems and NFPA for fire. If you can't cover your call's start thinking about joining forces with your neighbor who is covering the call! Thanx for all you do and please stay safe!

Orange County's policy is that if an EMS agency or fire department misses a call, for the remainder of the twelve hour period (6A-6P) or (6P-6A), the mutual aid agency is toned out at initial dispatch
Maybe Westchester should adopt something similar

So many calls, one of the few that did not involve someones loss of property, life or severe injury... In 1994, I had the pleasure of being part of crew that delivered a healthy baby boy in their house. I still remember going back out to the bus to get the stretcher when the Mount Pleasant PD officer on scene told his dispatch "A healthy baby boy was just delivered, I need the official time." The dispatcher responded "0113 hours". At that point the officer looked up, it was also his shield number.

Nice looking rig... From the pictures I saw, I would recommend you keep an eye on the defroster... Croton's T 10 appears to have the same set up ( 1 center diffuser vent ) and during last winter while handling several runs, we had big issues with the windshield fogging up... Right now Seagrave is still looking into it, and they have a few months to figure it out, but I would keep it in mind and check yours...

Its honestly pathetic. There's a national standard that already exists, but some places still want to live in the stone age and pretend its not necessary for them. If you don't want to EARN the title of Firefighter then I don't want you on my rig.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU. It's about the community you're supposed to be serving and the level of service (and competency) they expect. The fact that they don't know the details is no excuse. They deserve it.

I have taken both survival and fast class twice, not only because i enjoy taking class but because i have learned something different each time on one of the most important topics of firefighting. If you have the time two take these classes twice do it, and if you don't have time then make time!!! because it will benefit you as a firefighter but your brothers and sisters that you could potentially safe from a life threatening situation.
Remember585- i think that sitting guys down from fast teams and brainstorming or talking about different tactics that each team does would be a great idea. it be a benefit to other departments to learn what they do and try to learn new tactics and bounce ideas off one another. Being from kisco our fast team has been busy in the past with a lot of experienced guys but id really like to sit down with other teams to see what other fast teams do for years of service and age requirements to ride and be part of a fast team. The age of the guys that us younger guys lean on are starting to get up there and there response is starting to decline to these types of calls and with us getting a bunch of new young guys in the company id really like to see what other teams requirements are to get on these teams if they have them at all along with comparing it to our requirement that we have in place. Im sure if a get together was organized you would have a good amount of participants that show up to put there two cents in.

I like the discussion here. But I have yet to really hear from any department (other than one) that is really interested in putting all of our heads together to work towards the same thing.
Firefighter safety, survival and rescue training is near and dear to me. I firmly believe the additional 24 hours of FAST training should be tacked on to the Firefighter I & Survival classes the WCFTC puts out. I also can't comprehend why survival training and rescue of our own is not minimum training for all of us. To make it a separate program and not make it required training STATEWIDE irritates the living hell out of me.
What further irks me is that guys walk out of the training center, carrying their Firefighter I certificates (most not take Survival, thanks WCDES) and never again take a course to better themselves in the interest of all those that they will be working with.
Survival and Firefighter Rescue Training needs to be a requirement - period, end of story.

So if they are not called mutual aid to the scene as FAST and end up "sitting outside" They are left sitting back in their fire station in their district or are they just buffing the call to take pictures and "standing outside" anyway?

FDNY 10-75, your infromation is incorrect. Excelsior Fire Equipment was the previous Seagrave Dealer. Hudson Valley Fire Equipment is the new 10 county Hudson Valley Seagrave Dealer and WILL be delivering E-105.

To all the FDNY members on this site- you don't know how lucky we are/were, with the FDNY shops and radio repair, etc. The field crew (on-duty FDNY mechanics who respond to qtrs for app repairs) has always been top-notch. They try to repair whatever they can, to prevent you having to get a spare and change over the rig (PAIN in the ASS, esp. for the engine co., with all the hose to change over. The radio repair guys come to qtrs to fix any problems with the mobile data terminal (MDT) or siren or app radio; the tire repair guys respond to wherever you end up with a flat, and throw on a new tire. I dare say that most career depts. on this site aren't that lucky?!
I recall many years ago, when I "vested/retired" from FDNY and got a job as a shift commander in a west coast Florida county FD. The rigs were in fairly poor condition, and anytime there was a problem with one of the pieces, we had to tow it/drive it to the county repair shop, where they repaired all county vehicles- there was no specific "fire apparatus mechanic". Needless to say, the rigs were not always repaired correctly. After 8 months there, I was lucky enough to get back on FDNY. It was quite an experience, looking back. One of the better firefighters on my shift (who grew up on LI) asked me one day-"Cap, why did you leave the "Yankees" to come play with the "Port charlotte RedHens"? I asked myself that question every day until I got back to the Big Apple. Nothing beats playing with the Big Guys!

Trucks are getting larger and the firehouse is not growing along with it. We two have many commercial buildings along with a hospital many schools and the biggest threat is the old grand union warehouse which poses many threats for us as a fire department. The media misinformed you as they usually do we DO NOT just cover 3 square miles. We are also contracted to cover an additional 8 square miles for the town of Bedford and new castle. These additional areas give very little hydrant protection. This is the main reason to having 4 engines because we do not have a tanker in our department. As stated above one firehouse is not feasible in our village due to flood problems also for ISO purposes the stations have been placed where they are for a reason. Mt Kisco fd is set up the way it is for a reason and all were asking for is a little more room.

The village owns the firehouses, fire companies own the equipment. Big issue on one centralized firehouse would be where to build it. Currently not one buildable lot big enough in the village to house such a facility. Maybe a couple locations, but those areas are wetlands and flood everytime you get a rainstrom. Easiest solution would be to bring current firehouses up to ADA code and expand them where you can. Overall cost would be far less than a new facility. Just my opinion!

Chief, the way we operate is not comparable to anywhere else in the country, you would be better off attending a brotherhood instructors course on forcible entry or roof or ladder ops, that's where the members learn something, sitting in a class is useless for most.
