Find me a single story of a child predator using a tot finder decal. Most children are attacked by someone they already know.
The real problem is no one ever took them down. My neighbors house had them from when the kids were babies. They grew up and moved out but the stickers never came down. They finally came down when a new family with young children moved in. Go figure.

If you want to be taken seriously, you need to act and write seriously. If you can not write out complete sentences without "text-speak" when address professionals, especially on a topic you feel so passionately about, then you will not be taken seriously or given the respect you desire. Effective communicating is just one part in the difference between adolescence and maturity. Another aspect is understanding your limits and the risk involved in your actions. At 19 and male, the insurance for your car is significantly higher than that of a 30 year old male, if you don't pay your actual bill, ask your parents, thats what I did. There is a reason for this difference, this reason is that people in OUR age and sex groups get into a significantly higher number of crashes causing serious property or bodily harm. These are the indisputable facts backed up by well documented and respected statistics. If you do not believe this also relates to driving fire apparatus, then I have no idea what facts will actually sell you on anything. One thing that needs to be understood is that no one here is saying you specifically are a bad driver, however the facts and statistics are stacked heavily against you. Additionally, no one is saying you will crash, however, odds are you will at some point before you turn 25. What people are saying here is that at 19 you have had a full drivers license for 3 years tops if your 20th birthday is tomorrow, if you have been a full member of your department since age 18 you have only been interior qualified for 2 years, if you have been driving, you may have been driving for a year, maybe a year and a half. If anything is even remotely true, how many times have you driven your ladder in the snow, the rain, the 40+ mph gusts of wind? How many times have you driven code 3 to a working fire with reports of people trapped? How many times in a year to a year and a half have you considered what crashed the $750,000 rig you are driving endangering the lives of yourself, your crew, the people on the road and the people who called for your assistance will do to you, your family, your department and the community?
My answer, as well as the answer of those opposing your opinion on this topic is not enough...I am sorry we disagree but its not about your feelings or opinion, its about public safety. Not public safety in terms of police/fire/ems, but public safety in the form you of driving a 20+ ton piece of high tech firefighting equipment 30+ miles an hour down a busy street while school is getting out. Sure outliers do exist, but statistics dont lie. You factually and statistically are not a safe driver nor experienced driver. You are right, you need experience to get skilled, just not at 19...

Notice how all older members are saying Teens usually do not have the experience or maturity to operate a large emergency vehicle?? Its because we all were at one time the young guys chomping at the bit to get in there and were absolutely convinced that we were ready. Its only later when you realize how unprepared you really were. I am a huge advocate for Juinor Corps and young member involvement, but there are some things you just need to be around for a while before you're ready for them. Its a fact that teens are involved in proportionally more serious accidents than anyone else and almost as many accidents as the elderly. You can cite examples of this guy in XYZ FD or the military but one is a unique case and often a result of desperation rather than choice and the other is someone that is intensively trained and molded into a mature experienced person beyond their years.

How often are motorcyclists killed by a driver turning left in front of them without any charges being filed? It happens all too often, and with little more than a "whoops, my bad, I didn't see him" as a defense. Should those drivers be stripped of their licenses? Or is it simply the fact that the victim is "one of us" that is driving your desire for blood? Accidents happen.

nycmedic you couldn't be more wrong. If they did start sending EMS off at the PD text we're going to have more units chasing bogus arrests. That will make our already slow response time slower. Currently we're averaging just over 7 minutes to 1-3 segments. Add fire to the mix and the response times drop to 4:28. This doesn't include call processing. Just dispatched to 84. Firefighters, due to their numbers can quickly dismount and get to the patient. By the time we gather all our crap and wait for the elevator (because stairs scare us) we've taken another minute or two longer than the engine. So since arrest, its been 90 seconds of call taking, 7 minutes of driving, and say...2 minutes till patient contact. Thats over 5 minutes of dying brain.
Then we have AHA's research saying it takes 6 or 8 (I can't remember which) to effectively run an arrest.
Then there's perks that aren't quantified. CFR's operate in their normal response area. We get yanked all over the city. How many times have you been unsure of the jobs location until you saw the giant red signal light sitting ifo? Then we have to get the patient out of the tiny apt packed with 20 years of crap and 5 floors up. How efficiently can you clear the hallways, get your crap, and get the patient out with just the 5 of you?
Drop the I don't need firefighters bull and do what's best for the patient. Multiple hands doing high quality cpr for two minute intervals. Fire will be facing cuts, but removing the CFR program will only cost more lives.

First and foremost, the union is just a representation of the members. If the union is garbage, the members allowed it. All the strongest unions have a history of strong member support. You have a chance to either put up or shut up. I hope it all goes well for you.

abaduck may be very liberal, but he has never been anti-police. He usually goes to great lengths to point out he's not against police, he just questions the powers given to them. We NEED people to question. Question changes, question the status quo, question everything. He's not one of these whiney children bitching incessantly. He asks questions, makes points, sometimes changes his stance, and other times doesn't. Without debate, what's the point?

Is he really an a-hole for this? Its a valid question and absolutely true in respect to the volley world. Ed did a good job clarifying what would to the casual observer appear to be several vehicles out of service.
Vehicles go out of service all of the time for maintenance, training, calls, etc. Publicity and community outreach is important. So long as accommodations are made to maintain protection I see no harm.

paint jobs do not improve visibility. If all the lights and reflective striping don't do it, no color is going to make a difference. The additional cost of painting the car is compounded by the additional cost of repairing these cars.
When they are slashing budgets and laying people off, every wasted dollar matters.

you were shocked by this? really? I am a frequent offender of blocking hydrants, fire lanes, etc but only when convenient parking options are unavailable. Maybe in the minutes before you arrived there were no convenient spots. Nothing like coming outside after the delivery truck, engine, RMP, and dbl parked cars are gone to see my ambulance sitting in the middle of the street all by itself. He's not on a call, so yes he could absolutely park somewhere else but is this really that big of a deal? Its the fire lane and the curb cut is still easily accessible.
More importantly, you knew where the offender was. Did you take this up with them personally or just come here to whine about it?

What do you think happens when you leave two cold and hungry people in the middle of the woods and tell them to wait until morning?? They try and get themselves out, putting them at greater risk of injury or death. There are better ways than abandonment to address this. Out west if you get into trouble due to your own stupid you get a bill for services.

I just went back thru all the post and found that it took 73 post before it turned into a paid vs. volunteer discussion with this statement: "There is only one difference between a volunteer and paid department. Payroll and pension costs. Otherwise they're exactly the same."
Prior to that I saw no one attacking either side or making false statements about either side.
If I connect the 1st sentence with the 2nd you appear to be implying that I have stated "volunteers /departments suck!". I take great offense as I know many excellent volunteers and many excellent depts and have stated that regularly and work with many vol. depts. This week 3 different depts called me for assistance, which I have always given. I have clearly stated that depts or individuals that hide behind the shield of "volunteer" while providing substandard service are fair game. I have also spoken out against career and combo depts that also do not meet standards.
You $315 is a nice low number, but hard to give a fair comparison since I do not know what the value of your home is or exactly which insurance district it is in. But I can give it a shot.....
I pay $425 for a 100% career FD and all ALS EMS. I know exactly what services will show up at my house in 3 minutes. Do I pay more because of the services or because of the value of my home compared to yours...do not know, but economicly what do I get for my additional $110/year? I get an ISO rate that is lower than every structure in your town, In fact some parts of your town are listed as an ISO 9, that means I save anywhere from $80 - $540 in insurance than a comperable home in your town.
The cost of fire protection is not just the FD Budget, there are many other factors and infact, even with a career FD, the smallest portion of cost for fire protection is the FD.

So yes, on EMTBravo a thread about lights and consolidation os going to get a lot more attention than this tragedy. But that is only because there are better places to focus your concern than a thread here that just posts links to other sites.
