IF only it were that simple. Keep in mind, the Staff area always being criticized. If we revoke privileges, we are "too harsh." If we allow things to persist, we "aren't doing our jobs."
As I said, this matter is under review. Thank you for understanding.

If you've got a flycar sitting outside for a week and a half without going anywhere you probably have to rename it. Or sell it!!

Nothing against the hard work of the moderators (particularly in this case FDNY 10-75) But this section is hurting the quality of EMTBravo.
I enjoy seeing what depts are getting. but this is just filler. This morning 80% of the recent board is about rigs being delivered or that might be put out to bid. With half the info either unknown or TBD.
Meanwhile it replaced, a LODD thread, Chains, Grants and other great threads.
If posters have real info on a new rig great, lets see. But this is just filler and is taking away from what makes EMTbravo great.
    Rant over.

    Seth,
Can't imagine the work that goes into running the site. Been a long time viewer, and have always enjoyed the content. The news, the photos, and the forum are always great. I would like to see you take a quick survey regarding a subscription fee. There are many good sites out there, and many charge a small fee. I would be more than willing to pay an annual subscription fee of $10 or $20, and I'm sure many would do the same.
It's a shame that a few jackasses have ruined the site and turned so many people off. You could always remove certain sections of the forum, or remove those posting offensive posts permanently from the forum/website. I have spent the last 23 years of my life in both the volunteer & career fire service. I've worked & volunteered in some of the smallest & largest fire departments in the country in a number of different states. I have found over the years that most of the people writing stupid posts, complaining about paid guys vs. vollies, pointing out idiotic "safety" concerns, etc. have no life and have no experience with which to back up their claims. I have been involved in teaching on the local, state, and national level since 1994. There are many great instructors from both paid & volunteer departments, who have a lot of training & experience to share with those willing to learn. I have met guys from all of the country that travel great distances, often on their own dime (just like I've done all these years) to learn new things from the best instructors & the best classes. It's people like that for which I thought this site was dedicated.
Brother, reconsider shutting down the site. Charge a small subscription fee. Dedicate the site to photos, training, learning, and sharing the brotherhood that makes the fire service great. Thanks.

I do know of a few fire dept's. In Dutchess county who have blue lights on there rigs and in there chief cars faceing frunt. Im told by them we are vollinteer, and it helps get people's attion and helps out there members cuse people dont know what u are they just move over really just give everyone red light's cuse all we do is drive with the blue lights on to get in the truck with red lights at one point i had more lights blue and white in the frunt of my truck then some chief's and had blue, red and yellow out the rear and on foggy nights and in rain the blue stands out the best my old fire house has had blue on the back of every truck for over a year now and it helps like someone said red and yellow will drow you to it but bule wakes you up. just my 2 cents

Let me ask this, and no, I'm NOT asking because I have a problem with any of my officers:
What about the reverse situation, how long is TOO LONG for an Officer to serve?
We've all seen departments with Chiefs who have just been Chiefs for too long. They refuse to accept new technology, tactics or ways of doing things.
Does your department have term limits? How long? Does it work?
Which to you is worse? A very young 2nd Lieutenant or a Chief that's been in office for too long?

Sounds like a classic you against me! LOL
Volunteer Officers are one of my pet peeves..... elections are a historically and well documented flawed system...a popularity contest. But I digress...
MY OPINION, is that a measley 3 years in a department is not enough to be a good canidate for leadership...5 is better, but still....it needs to be based on experience and training...
Everybody wants to race up through the ranks and be a Chief.....at what costs though? Are you REALLY the right person for the job/position you are in?
What about the Officers that get voted out every other year because the pissed some guys off, while doing their supervisory duties? Been there....more than once..
What these guys coming into a department dont think about - when you put on that Officer helmet...is you are ultimately responsible for the guys on that scene....if you order them into a building that isn't safe, because of your inexperience and FAILURE to recognize dangers...be prepared to deal with a negligence suit...and those guys that DO realize this...pull members out of buildings prematurely and go defensesive way to early!
Guys - forget the shiny white shield - get some real fireground experience first - it can ot be replaced by classroom training! Let yourselves grow into being a true leader, get experience, respect....the rest will come when it is time.
I coud go on all day about this........
    EDIT for random thoughts;
"Beware the 21 year old Fire Chief"
I would like to see TWO year terms for elected Officers
I beleive in at LEAST 5 years of junior officer terms before moving up to a Chief; 5 years as a Lieutenant and Captain...
Once you make it to Officer - BE ONE! Supervise.....you should not have a nozzle, hook, saw, Hurst Tool, etc in your hand unless a lack of manpower dictates you must work! Let your FIREMEN do it...and supervise them. A recent picture posted on here shows a vollie Lieutenant on a roof with a saw, with 3 guys backing him up....Hey Loo - give up the saw, and monitor conditions on the roof! Your guys will love ya for letting them "Do Work" and you will gain supervisory experience...actions like that do not go unnoticed by senior guys...

Ah, Grasshopper, once again the Secret Code. If you ask a FF "Do you know Joe Blow?" Listen between the lines at the answer.
Yeah I know Joe means Joe's a slug and the FF doesn't like him
Yeah, Joe's a good guy means fun to hang out with, maybe not a good FF
Yeah Joe's a good FF means you trust Joe
Joe? Yeah...Good man Means you would follow through hellfire
You've got it figured out, Firediver. I just put the secret code up for newcomers who didn't know.

First and foremost, I want to thank our many IA posters. More often than not, the IAs are very informative, well documented, and for proper incidents, according to our guidelines.
One issue that we see sometimes, is multiple people posting IAs for the same incident, most likely because they all hit the "Start New Topic" button near the same time, obviously unbeknownst to the others. Now the issue that presents, is multiple IAs, sometimes with all the same info, sometimes each has bits and pieces that the others don't.
How does this get managed? At this time, the Moderators, or Administrators go through, and compile all the information, and will edit the FIRST IA POSTED, and add that information in. Any subsequent IA, posted after the first person hit "Post New Topic", will then be deleted. To give credit where credit is due, the authors of the subsequent posts will be added as "Reporters" to the primary IA, and the "Writer" will be the first person who got their IA posted.
Ok, you're now asking why I am posting this thread? Well, it is in hopes that some people MIGHT be able to "Self Moderate" when this issue presents. If you are the person who gets your IA posted first, try and look to see if any others IA have been started (if not a time issue; i.e. major incident where most of your time is spent updating your own IA). Should you find other posts, try and incorporate their information into yours, and add them as a "Reporter"
If you post an IA, and later notice someone else beat you to it, please, PM the member any information you have, and request to have it added to their IA, and you credited as a "Reporter". If you keep recording information, please pass that along to the original IA author as well.
The Moderators and Admins will continue to manage the IAs as normal, but if you see you were the 3rd or 4th person to post an IA, please try and keep the clutter on the boards down, and you can always PM a Moderator for help if you see this happening.
A good example of this, that was done today, is the link below:

Thank you for reading, and Happy Posting!

Back in 2002 or 2003, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office Accident Reconstruction Unit came to my FD and have a couple hours lecture, and Powerpoint demonstration on Accident Scene Preservation. Things like this can help FFs to see an accident scene as something other than just a couple wrecked cars and patients, and thinking about it possibly being a crime scene (even down to minor to moderate MVCs), and to be cognizant and make all attempts to not disturb evidence. Now, I am by no means saying that is how FFs think of MVC scenes, but we can get complacent sometimes, and not think of some of these things while attempting to fulfill our own duties.

OSHA uses many NFPA standards as the bases of the OSHA regs. In some cases they refer directly to NFPA (as directed by federal law).
Also the courts clearly use NFPA as "what would the prudent person due in the same situation".
Federal OSHA Law requires states that set up its own OSHA program must enact all standards at an equal or greater level than the feds. In most cases NYS PESH enforces Fed OSHA regulations to the letter (including the same typos).

Just remember Lairdsville!!!! A chief was convicted because of failure to follow NFPA (1403). The standards are starting to be used in court.
  24. xfirefighter484x liked a post in a topic by SageVigiles in Turnout Gear Lifespan
NFPA is the industry standard, so you'd better have a damned good reason why you aren't following it when it comes time for court. Simply saying "its not mandatory" is not going to suffice, contrary to popular belief.
