And IIRC, the USA had their own memorial during Opening Ceremonies to the 2002 Winter Olympics, but of course NBC was sure to show THAT!
I think its disgraceful as well as all the stupid useless banter the announcers made during the Opening Ceremonies for these games. I would prefer to WATCH and LISTEN to what is going on instead of Matt Lauer, Bob Costas and Meredith Vieyra's mindless scripted commentary!

Ang, you always add a different dynamic to any conversation. I'd like to return the compliment to you, and tell you that you are right again. Retired apparatus I guess does fall into the category of "big boy toys." lol

The 2012 Summer Olympics are off and running. Many of us here probably watched the Opening Ceremony. Danny Boyle who directed "Slumdog Millionaire" put it all together.
For some reason the National Broadcasting Company decided there was a segment of the ceremony that would be edited out, and while it was happening we here in America got the treat of a Ryan Seacrest/Michael Phelps interview.
That segment it turns out was a tribute to the victims of the 7/7/2005 London bombings; Great Britain's 9/11.
Here's a link to view it. It's quite a beautiful and moving performance.

One person claims over 1000 people turned out. I would be amazed if the entire hamlet of Wassaic could handle that much lol, but regardless, looks like an overwhelmingly amazing turnout!!

My understanding was that over 1200 wristbands were issued at the gate to get in. A very proud feeling helping some one in need!

Wether you like the site or dont care for the site. this has become a place to get information from others in the field. its a place where we can exchange ideas and information. look at how other departments handle things , even monday morning quarterbacking is allowed.. we can look at pictures and say I might have done this or that. I know i have used many pictures from this site in classes.
I guess what I am saying is it is time to step up reach in--- if every one just put in there coffee money for the week--you dont drink coffee--fribble money what ever you get the point.
This site has given us many oppurnities to advance the fire service. Its time for the fire service to give back. leets rise tot he occuasion.

But TRUST me, I am with you 100% with you and your feelings as an LEO, as well as a fellow pro-gunner.
I will send you a PM when I get a chance.

To your comment I have 2 things to say:
    1. Its too bad the PD didn't get the chance to put this animal down. While we all hope that no law enforcement officer ever has to fire his weapon in the course of duty, but in this case, it would have been justice done simply.
    2. In CT there is no law against carrying a legally possessed weapon into a movie theater. Without getting into the huge gun control debate that will inevitably come out in the next few days (though it apparently already has) or "what if'ing" the specifics of this incident, theres nothing that prevents a permit holder from carrying in a theater in CT, not sure how you are in NY. Sure, the theater owner could say "no weapons on premises" and as a permit holder you would have to oblige, and they could get metal detectors, but LEGALLY there's nothing wrong with bringing your gun to a theater. Also, from the reports out right now (which of course may prove to be inaccurate) this guy had a shotgun and a rifle slung over his back. If you need a metal detector to find that, I'd recommend a good optician.
To the issue at hand here:
My heart goes out to the victims of this tragedy as well as their friends and families, and of course the first responders who I'm sure went through Hell trying to get this under control. It looks like the EOD and Tactical teams are still trying to render safe some IEDs at the suspect's house, wishing those guys a safe trip downrange. One of my classmates from Anniston is a Lieutenant with Denver Paramedics, I'm waiting to hear back if he was there and doing okay. This area not being any stranger to incidents of mass murder, I'm sure they have all the necessary CISD resources in the area to help these guys get through this emotionally. I'm sure this community will come back even stronger than ever, but we definitely need to stand with them now.
But what, to me, is one of the most disturbing parts of this entire tragedy is that within TWELVE HOURS, individuals with their political agenda have already opened their stupid, uninformed mouths and given their opinion on who is to blame and how we should prevent this type of thing from happening, etc. The FBI and police haven't even finished interrogating the guy yet and already these talking heads and political sycophants are going to give us "expert analysis" on what went through the mind of the shooter. There's something fundamentally wrong the modern media when their editors are willing to spew that kind of nonsense before the incident is even OVER. That is wrong, and we as a society need to let these people know that we aren't going to accept this kind of "reporting" (and I use that term very lightly.) There's just no such thing as responsible journalism anymore.

While I agree...this may be a great time to look at the big picture...New Hamburg is literally right down the street with a badass tower ladder....Hughsonville is not far with another tower ladder....PECO is a bit further with a quint/stick....Rombout is further yet, but still closer than most with another tower ladder...and then there is Croft with a stick....let's face it - southern Dutchess is nicely covered with truck companies.
While it is needed, is it really NEEDED?
Don't get me wrong - I know a bunch of guys from Wappingers - and they are among the finest to serve. Some truly great firemen come from down there.

Nicoli's decisions have left his home community with 1 less life-saver. For those of you that don't know, he has been awarded numerous life saving awards as well as a congressional level award from Congresswoman Dr. Nan Hayworth last month. It is unfortunate that internal FD politics have resulted in his decision to no longer be a firefighter.
I don't think my own community as a whole is aware of the separation between the the company and the district functions, as mirrored in one of the comments above. I certainly did not understand this for several years after becoming a FF/EMT.
When we hold fundraising events such as a "boot drive", we get dressed in our PPE and hold out fire boots for motorists to donate money to our cause.... "OUR CAUSE?" Unless they have a personal connection to the FD, I doubt that any significant percentage of the donators understand that this $ is NOT going towards training, equipment or operational readiness. This is straight up false advertising. And I am personally sickened by it. I've told my friends and family that donated money annually to the fire dept through the companies annual fund drive, to stop.
I have witnessed repeatedly over the years, tens of thousands of dollars getting spent by my company on parades, annual dinners, installation dinners, christmas parties, etc... And simultaneously get turned down for much needed equipment and stonewalled on training funds by the fire commission. Although these are two separate entities, there seems to be something very very wrong with this. I did not join the FD to drink beer either. I did not join to go to parades.
Ask yourselves: are you going through more cans of ZEP and tubs of turtle wax than saw blades and saw fuel? Our pride should not come from how shiney and clean our trucks are, but rather how dirty and trashed our gear is from having training with it so much. I believe that if we prioritize the trophies that go in a glass case over what we actually signed up to do, we are more likely to end up in a pine box.

Some of the most interesting parts mentioned in here are that they ask you to 'paint a picture' but at the same time "SHORT, CONCISE, AND TO THE POINT". No need for doctoral dissertations!!
