when it comes down to it; a title is just that and nothing more; its the job function that really counts and defines the job in the overall picture.

Well done although I prefer the "in service weathered look" Here is the box that was on duty 2 houses away form me growing up. It looks virtually the way it did when it was taken off the pole in 1986.

I do see both sides of the argument.
Having trainings and certifications is important, and elections are in many cases a popularity contest. However, there are plenty of people out there who are very book-smart and can amass binders full of certificates and take tests well, but who have zero business being in any kind of leadership role, either because of their inability to apply their knowledge in the field or because of their personalities.
Wouldn't an officer who took all of the required classes and passed any required tests, but has no "street-smarts" and doesn't have the respect of his subordinates be just as bad as the situation we have today.

Do we really have to start the union rhetoric and paid/volunteer nonsense here again?

This isn't a union issue. There's no local being subverted by volunteers in Spring Valley. This is a volunteer FD.

If you think that every volunteer FD should be replaced by a paid, career FD, that's your opinion and you're entitled to that opinion. Start a thread to that effect.

There are folks from our past who have helped shaped our careers (paid or non-paid) in emergency services. Be it in the fire service, EMS, or law enforcement we all had someone that influenced us.
Here in this tab, let's pay tribute to those we know as our mentors. You do not have to use their real names, a nickname or initials are fine. The important thing, you know who they are.
For me, there are three I consider mentors from back in the day.
Charlie Lent, for introducing me to the volunteer fire service
To Vince Vail, for teaching me first aid and developing my interest in EMS to where I first became an EMT
To Al Wohrman for inspiring me to learn and become more proficient in emergency services.
    Thank you.

Honestly from what it sounds like, you have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to this whole project and the issues we are soon to face out there. And, no one is trying to buy anybody out. That equipment would be used fairly often and the training wouldn't go to waste. We are talking about being able to save lives and do a job the right way. If you can't understand that then you need to get your facts straight and start from the beginning. I don't know what you have against this whole thing but other departments aren't going to be left out. Nyack should definitely look into getting stuff and same with the departments that send fireboats to TZ calls. There is nothing wrong with applying for a grant to get new apparatus and training. I don't see you bagging on the FDNY for all the stuff they got for Sandy. Is that because they are the FDNY and they are more deserving? Look, we all do the same job and want to do it in a safe and excellent manner. Stop hating and just be glad that if you ever find yourself in a tight spot, that hopefully one of these apparatus will be able to come and help you out.

Remember that when you take your department car to the NYS Chief's Show at Turning Stone Casino. And you guys are worried about a commissioner's car at Woodbury Commons.

We cannot discount the possiblity that it may have been there for some other sanctioned department/district business. Unless someone actually approached the operator of the vehicle and asked questions, there could be a million explanations that we don't know about.

Not making excuses...just an observation. If you are really concerned than call the department and ask why he was there.
