Not only is the money gone and the SCBA's not paid for, depending on how the grant was administered and the terms of the grant (I didn't read the whole article), the government may want their money back. Wouldnt be the first time.

Wow they've got tons to look forward to. Their top 25 applicants have a bottom 6 that are below 85%. Are you telling me that of all

the people that took the exam that these are the 25 best applicants with a quick average of 87% in my head. The 25th best applicant mustered a barely above fail?

HR56 is staffed by a technician trained in its operation and a firefighter 24/7 out of station 56 if I recall. It is used extensively by not only LAFD but the surrounding agencies and has been made available to any SoCal department that needs it.

I wouldn't be calling PCFD ENG58 out over anything that is taken out of context on this site.  The guy devoted his whole life to the PCFD both with and without a paycheck.

As drawn, I don't think we're looking at a rig that meets the NFPA definition of a Quint.  Looks like TL with a pump and a tank hidden in there somewhere.

If everything on the rig is essentially new, than why not enclose the cab?

The reasoning behind each MOS having their own vehicle is that they are much more likely to care for it and keep it in good working order than if just assigned a random unit at the beginning of each tour. The maintenance expense and longevity of the units provides an overall cost benefit in the long run. It also creates a presence in the community when you see patrol cars parked in officers driveways.

I agree with your numbers.  I respectfully disagree that "its truly about time the Airlines in the USA are doing this."  The first rig a FF operates isn't the million dollar tower ladder or heavy squad.  Guys don't leave Skip Barber Performance Driving School and go straight to Formula 1.  The Navy doesn't give a nuclear powered aircraft carrier to a guy straight out of Annapolis.  There is a significant benefit in gaining experience coming up through the ranks of operating "lesser" vehicles and while I realize that these students are going to fly smaller aircraft during their training I don't believe that their first day on the job should be on a 100+ seat aircraft.  Flying a CRJ100/200 for a few years on regional routes will give valuable day to day experience (which cannot be taught in training or in the simulator) prior to flying larger aircraft into and out of JFK, LGA, MCO, ATL, DCA, MIA, etc.

It should also be noted that the JetBlue pilots union opposes this method of recruiting pilots and believes that experienced pilots from regional airlines or recent military retirees are the best choices to fly the busy routes and larger aircraft that JetBlue utilizes.

Jet Blue doesn't fly any regionals and has no airframes manufactured by Bombardier. They exclusively operate Airbus A320/321's and Embraer E190/195's.  Both underwing powered aircraft.  I'm not saying this to rebuttal you but rather that rookie pilots flying larger underwing powered aircraft is concerning. Somehow I think they should cut their teeth elsewhere. 

In 1998 whomever provided ALS in New Castle left their ambulance on my front lawn when my father had a stroke. Medic road onboard CVAC's rig to NWMC. I've seen it done dozens of times at MVA's as well.

The rig in the picture was borrowed if I recall.... Havestraw comes to mind.  TL-27 in Chappaqua, replaced a 106ft rear-mount on what I think was a Hahn, or Oren chassis that was designated Ladder 3.

I too am unaware of subscription service in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

A follow up on this topic.... Attached is a link to a fire department web site in Southeast, PA as well as a screen grab of their most recent fundraising dinner. They are located in the hills between Gettysburg and Chambersburg. They are a rural department that relies on fundraising (mostly through their own activity and not necessarily by letter campaign). I ran 2nd and 3rd due into these guys territory for about 5 years. You wont find many better firefighting organizations out there. As you can see from the photo, the community thinks highly of them too. Sold out.... Meeting room and apparatus room floor filled with over 500 paying patrons.

This rig replaces an awesome Simon Duplex RM TL that they had for years. Frankly it was nice enough to refurb and keep in service if I recall.

Not the case at all. In fact many live in areas where there isn't taxation for fire protection. This is a contributing factor in why PA has more volunteer FF's than any other state in the nation. Fundraising is done on a consistent basis. It wouldn't be strange for a VFD to have a fundraising event once per month. Shrimp feeds, pig roasts, gun raffles, carnivals, clam bakes, pasta dinners, bingo night, poker tournaments, comedy night, friendship night, etc....

This is a great thing... Mohegan gets their old rig back and Evarts gets a resource they sorely need. My wife's entire family was from the county that surrounds Evarts. Harlan County Kentucky is quite possibly one of the most beautiful and simultaneously awful places in our country. A victim of the declining coal industry. Her mom and dad were glad to get out of there and be the first in their families to go to college. We go back to visit every year or so. Salt of the earth folks up there. The donation of the fire truck will go a long way.

What happens if transport of a K-9 is initiated but an actual patient becomes sick or injured?

Who should the transporting agency bill regarding K-9 transport? (Medicare/Medicaid will not cover it)

Doesn't make it right though. This is the problem with government spending in our country. The federal government isn't the only government wasting our money!!! It's on our doorstep!!!

No they can't. I don't think anyone is suggesting that they should. What has been suggested for years is a dual response by YHFD and MFC for the part of the YHFD south of the reservoir. The taxpayers should not suffer the unnecessary burden of purchasing this land, funding the construction of the building, maintenance, utilities and what eventually will lead to another apparatus purchase when there is a station from another fire district a mere foot stroll down the road. Subsequently, when a significant event occurs south of the reservoir, the aforementioned MFC substation will, based on history, be dispatched as a mutual aide company anyway. The fire district lines were drawn poorly many moons ago and frankly it makes zero sense for YHFD to have any response area south of the reservoir. The taxpayers of Yorktown Heights have rejected the construction of this station multiple times over the course of many years. The commissioners of the YHFD have, in plain sight, found a way to circumvent the will of the taxpayers by over funding other budgetary line items and then allocating those monies to the building fund as opposed to yielding to multiple rejections to referendum the taxpayers have already weighed in on. Finally, while I have no proof of it, logic would dictate that most citizens living south of the reservoir who are interested in being volunteer firefighters are most likely members of the MFC not YHFD. Therefor it would also make sense that the members of YHFD that are required to staff a full response crew for the apparatus housed in the new station will most likely respond from north of the reservoir where the lion-share of YHFD members reside. As a result, the benefit to those protected by the YHFD south of the reservoir is limited by the fact that the response of members is still coming from from north of the reservoir as it has for decades.

While it is probably easy to think that I'm ranting because I'm a former MFC member, but I have no skin in the game as I live in Florida now, and frankly even if I still lived in the district, the construction of this station doesn't affect MFC's response one bit. MFC never responded to routine calls in YHFD's territory south of the reservoir and I don't believe that YHFD would ever enter into a dual response relationship to do so anyway. MFC has always been a mutual aid company to YHFD's district south of the reservoir and frankly the addition of a single engine company in a sparsely populated area isn't going to eliminate the need to call MFC for mutual aid on larger calls. So for MFC nothing changes. But this rant isn't about MFC its about a poor stewardship of the people's money and the fact that the YHFD commissioners have chosen to brazenly ignore and circumvent the wishes of the people who elected them in the first place. What ever happened to the "consent of the governed?"
