I don't want to make light of this but...
Sounds like Mrs. Cardillo doesn't allow Joe to smoke inside the house. I can relate to that because my wife doesn't allow it either. So stepping outside to smoke that butt presumably saved his life. Of course it may've also destroyed their home.
I wonder how Mrs. Cardillo will see this?

Fire officials believe a buildup of propane gases in a basement area from a faulty underground propane tank set off a massive explosion that destroyed a million-dollar North Stamford home Tuesday afternoon.

The explosion was reported in a 911 call at 1:54 p.m. Tuesday, and responding fire crews found the home leveled and debris scattered in a 400-foot radius on the property. Nearby homes were damaged as well.
The propane remaining in the tank, which was only used to heat a swimming pool, was burned off in a process that took over twenty-four hours.

Even now it's still painful to look back at that horrible day. But we do need to remember and to never forget.

12 years later gone but will never be forgotten. We still got your back
We remember the 343 Firefighters in NYC that died that day but we should not forget all the Police officers, EMT's and victims on the planes, in the Towers or the Pentagon and especially those who are suffering from or passed away from cancer because they dug the rubble at the site.
Or the K-9's that helped that got sick

I was recently given a book of old NRFD pictures and asked to scan them and post them. They are from the John Maguire (the midnight voice of KEF-934) collection. Many are his work.

FDNY Loaner was returned to NYC, painted Blue used in a TV Commercial then overpainted Red and sold to NRFD. Used as L13 for a while

Terrific that everybodygoes would write what he did. Very well stated! I knew a lot of White Plains firefighters and cops when I lived and worked in White Plains and the residents are VERY lucky. Most have no idea.
As a citizen and a homeowner I can tell you this concerns me. I was told during one serious structure fire WPFD called in an additional ladder company on MA to set up an aerial attack on one of the exposure sides. However the company responding was a two-man company. Thus the IC had to use enginemen -- or request an additional engine company -- to help the ladder company set up. It created delay.
I feel lucky, I really do, that I live in Yonkers. I was told by someone at YFD that their normal procedure is to dispatch four engines and two trucks on any job that sounds like it may be a working fire. He said they do this in order to have enough manpower present to mount an aggressive attack in the early stages of the fire. He said, "So far it seems to be working."

The people of White Plains are very lucky. These Brother's are so understaffed it is not even funny. I doubt the people there know how dedicated the members are and how much they are required to do compared to NYC, and to say that they don't or anyone doesn't deserve the same staffing is not true. The amount of fire load that WPFD NRFD YFD Greenburgh and fairview covers is the same as NYC actually even greater throw in MVFD and the 2 guys they have on a rig, man, you guys are doing a great job!

A tough morning for WPFD and WPPD. A smoky arson fire at the downtown YMCA, over 100 residents to be evacuated at 0330 AM. A crime scene.

After just reading the history of the White Plains FD up to 1955 I would say PJM1733 is pretty much on target.
Station 7 being the last new fire station to be built was most likely just assigned that number to be in chronological order.

Back in High School 77-80 we would stop by( in-between classes) Station 7 using the back door and use the (candy machine) . The Firemen where very cool as long as you did not leave a mess . Guess what, nobody I knew ever caused a problem.
Tommy, as you know each fire house "had" a coinciding engine with the firehouse number, Engine 1 Station 1. I am not going to pretend to be some kind of expert on it, but seeing no body else wants to chime in. I will try my theory, but now watch all the responses. In the beginning each fire house had it own name example South Side Engine Co # 4 was Station 4, East Side Engine Co Station 3, Pretty sure it was Chatterton Hose Co Station 5 But it was on Robertson av. <<<<<Scratching Head . Fire Patrol Co Station 1 and so on. @ some point they just numbered the engines with the stations and Headquarters Station 6 began its dual identity, because that's where the Chief was Located. I think the Vollys still use those names today .
I have always been a believer in " if you cant dazzle the with brilliance" Baffle them with, well you know the rest .
as a bonus for putting up with my rant here is a pick that was sent to me today by a friend (Titled Protection From Today)
